The Mayor Sez…
Recently I was asked what I think will be the biggest
changes in Odebolt in the next four to eight years. I think the first
big change will be the beautification of our town. I think that it is
the will of the people to make our town look the best it can be. That
change is already under way, big time, by the OBC (Odebolt Betterment
Committee). Another change will be for us to get used to seeing golf
carts driving on our streets. These will be properly licensed and
lighted (head lights, tail lights, turn signals). Some of our mini-cars
aren’t much more than golf carts now. With reservation many cities are
already allowing golf carts to be used on their streets and if I am not
mistaken we are going to see it happen in the ‘bolt, too. Thoughts to be
continued……..

November 28, 1921 - July 21, 2009
OBITUARY: ARWANNA HANSON
Arwanna Elizabeth (Kropf) Hanson was born on November
28, 1921 to Jake and Fannie Kropf. She grew up on a farm near Boyer,
Iowa. She attended a one room school before moving to Odebolt where
she graduated from high school in 1940. Arwanna met Charles Hanson
while attending high school. After graduation she returned to the
one room schoolhouse where she taught for four years.
December 10, 1944 she married Charles Hanson at the
Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. The Navy dictated their next few
homes as duty called. Wannie and Chuck were blessed with four
children, Neil Paul, Nancy Lee, James Norman and Julie Ann. As a
stay at home mom they made their home in Denison where she cared for
the family as well as working outside the home. The family moved to
Malvern, Iowa in 1962 where she managed and later owned the Dairy
Sweet. After retiring from the fast food industry in Malvern, they

childhood. She loved to play bridge, canasta and spend time with
Chuck and her family. She was the best pie maker in the state of
Iowa in the opinion of her family and all that sampled her wares.

of the rest of us could make a peanut butter sandwich. She was a 50
year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served many years
as the Mother Advisor of Rainbow for girls. She was a member of the

The Mayor Sez…
I recently attended an Odebolt Betterment
Committee meeting and came away with an enormous feeling of
accomplishment by this group. In another “Mayor Sez…”, I am going to
list these accomplishments and the committee members that are making it
all happen I also want to thank Eric and his FFA members for their
endeavor to help beautify our city. The entry sign committee has had an
unavoidable hold up on completing their project, however, will soon be
bringing their project to completion which includes lighting of the
signs and landscaping them.
If there is anyone who would like to get involved on
any of the above, or the Odebolt Memorial Walk Park, please contact Joan
@ city hall. We have had some feed-back on the tennis courts, but need
more.

The Mayor Sez…
If anyone read the minutes of the July council meeting
you have noticed that we have many dogs that are causing problems. The
owners of the dogs are responsible for their dog’s actions and will be
dealt with according to city ordinances. Enough said!
The council is concerned about the lack of use of our
tennis court. It was suggested that we poll the community to get your
thoughts on the matter. One suggestion was to convert it to a basketball
court????
It has been awhile since I have done a Burma Shave
thing so here goes----“No matter the price, no matter how new, the best
safety device in the car is YOU!” Burma Shave.

Barn Quilt Signs -- (photo) "Welcome to
Sac County Barn Quilts" signs are going up near state highways around
Sac County.
Since 2005 visitors to Sac County have seen colorful
quilt blocks all over the county, adorning historic barns and corncribs.
The Sac County Barn Quilt Committee coordinated the project in 2005 and
2006, placing barn quilts in every township and smaller community quilts
in each town throughout the county. In the last couple years the
quilt blocks have multiplied and can be seen on business buildings,
garages, sheds and free-standing in yards.
Thanks to sale of the book "Barn Quilts of Sac County",
the Barn Quilt Committee raised the money needed to have the welcoming
signs made and installed.
In the Odebolt area the signs are located south of Odebolt on
Highway 39 on the property of Reese Johnson, and west of Odebolt on
Highway 175 on the property of Dan Snyder.

OBC HWY. 175 PARK REVITALIZATION
The shelter house at the triangle
park was built by the OA FFA boys in 1972. This was the site for the
Odebolt Ground Corp Observers Tower. The shelter house and park had
fallen into disrepair and we felt with the history and the location
it was project worth saving.
So with the help of the City of Odebolt, volunteers and
generous donations this project has become a reality. Please view
the photos below to see the changes we have made! We have
re-shingled, painted and planted a flower bed. The City has placed a
new picnic table for use at the shelter house and by the end of the
summer we hope to have a handicap accessible sidewalk and a
commemorative plaque honoring the history of the Ground Corp
Observer Tower.

Highlights from July 14
Odebolt Betterment Committee Meeting
The Odebolt Betterment Committee held their meeting
July 14 at 6:00 at City Hall. Items to be discussed were sign
landscaping, Dierenfield property and the Cracker Jack cribs. At
this time Madeline treated everyone to a box of Cracker Jacks.
Kerry reported that Cubby’s Inc. donated $500.00 to the
organization to be used where we found necessary.
The grant on the landscaping of the signs has been
tentatively approved, but we are waiting on the paper work and the
contract. Howard made a motion to wait until the 10th of
August and if we have not heard from the grant at that time we will
go ahead and withdraw from the grant and buy the plants on our own
and get them planted so they can become established before winter.
Grant Thayer said that the lights were ready to be put
in but they are waiting for the dirt work and the brick work.
On the Dierenfield property the house and the trees are
down and in a pile. We are waiting for the Fire Dept. to burn,
hopefully it will be either Wed. or Thurs. night of this week. Gary
Roth has some backhoe work that will be needed to be done. And he
will have to haul in some sand to fill some of the holes. There has
been no money spent at this time on this project.
Madeline thanked Steph Reinhart for her excellent work
on the brochure. Barb Horak has placed an OBC link on the Odebolt
web page, which we appreciate.
After much discussion on the Cracker Jack cribs it was
decided from lack of participation this project was dropped. Maybe
in the future we could have a billboard painted with this mural on
it and have it at an entrance into town.
Kerry gave talk on the progress of the Triangle Park.
We are waiting for the plaque and the sidewalk. Evapco has donated
the stand for the plaque.
The project we will be working on in the future is to
complete the trail going up 1st street.
The next meeting will be held Aug. 11 at 6:00 at
City Hall.

Odebolt Police Department is no more.
Due to the economic
situation County Law is becoming a sign of the times in rural areas.
As of June 30, 2009, law enforcement in Odebolt was transferred to
the Sac County Sheriff's Department.
On June 1, 2009 the Odebolt City Council voted to
approve a 28-E City/County Contract and Intergovernmental
Cooperation Agreement with the Sac County Sheriff's Department.
The Sheriff's Department will provide 24/7 law enforcement for the
City of Odebolt. The City will also be served with a Detective
Investigator as needed. The agreement will be on a trial basis
for the remainder of 2009. Cost of services will be partially
off-set by County purchase of Odebolt police equipment. The City
Council feels that county law enforcement will prove to be a
substantial savings for Odebolt taxpayers.
As of June 29,
2009 former Odebolt Police Chief Sonny Bruns was hired as a Deputy
Sheriff in the Sac County Sheriff's Office. Bruns began duty
in Odebolt after graduating from Police Academy in July 2008.
He filled the Odebolt Chief of Police position vacated September 15,
2008 by Chief Bruce Henderson. Bruns had previously been
reserve officer for the Odebolt Police Dept. for three years.
Deputy Bruns will continue to reside in Odebolt.
Sac County Chief Deputy, Keith Flink also makes his home in
Odebolt.
I
scream, you scream,
we all scream
for ice cream!
According to this week's
Chronicle, July is ice cream month. Well, as a lifelong
icecreamaholic, I feel compelled to tell some of my Odebolt ice
cream stories.
When I was three and we lived at the north end of North Main
Street in Odebolt, I walked by myself all the way downtown to the
Odebolt Bakery to buy an ice cream cone. I crossed Highway 175
safely and walked up to the snack counter at the bakery, grasping my
nickel (one scoop), or maybe it was a dime (two scoops). Wonderfully
rich vanilla ice cream was scooped into a pointed wafer cone and
sprinkled with tiny colored candies.
As I turned to go I was confronted by the sight of my
mom just getting out of dad's pickup across the street. She had that
"thank God you're alright, but I'm going to give you a spanking
right now" look on her face. She didn't disappoint.
I'd probably been able to wander off on my own because
Mom had a tiny baby to take care of, (today's Odebolt web master),
and she lost track of me for a few minutes. No doubt the ladies at
the bakery had called her to tell her where I was when I was busy
getting my cone. That's the way it is in a small town--everyone
knows which children belong to which parents, and all the adults
watch over all the children.
We always had ice cream at the church picnic in the
park. One of the men would bring it in a long metal cylinder encased
in beige canvas. There were cones for children of all ages.
The Modern Inn was the first eating establishment in
Odebolt to have soft-serve ice cream. They called it "Sweden Cream",
and it was delicious.
We moved to our grandparents' farm when they retired.
Those were the days when the farmers still checked the corn; that
is, they planted it so that there were rows lengthwise, crosswise
and diagonally in the field, the easier to cultivate it for weed
control. One of our favorite things to do on those beautiful summer
evenings was to go for a ride and look at everyone's cornfields. Our
job was to affirm to Dad that his corn rows were indeed the
straightest and best-checked. He loved hearing it. Just before
heading home, we'd drive into town to buy vanilla ice cream and a
quart of ginger ale. At home Dad beat up the ice cream with the
mixer to soften it, then added the ginger ale until the mixture had
the consistency of a thick malted milk. Yum! We drank it all up, of
course.
In high school I worked at the Frosty Treat, the
original drive-in business where Gobby's is today. The two Kathy's
and I became experts at twirling soft-serve ice cream into a cone.
If the order was for a chocolate cone, we'd dip it upside down into
the thin chocolate coating which hardened on contact with the frozen
ice cream. We made malts, shakes, rootbeer floats, and sundaes with
various toppings, the king of which was hot fudge; it had to be
delivered quickly by the car-hops.
Today in Odebolt the best ice cream treat, in my
opinion, is a scoop of that rich vanilla at Caroll's Kitchen atop a
piece of apple pie or bumbleberry pie or rhubarb pie. What the
heck--atop any of Caroll's homemade fruit pies!
Not far behind are all the ice cream treats at Gobby's, or a
self-serve cone or dish of ice cream at one of the convenience
stores. Thanks to my summers working at the drive-in, I can spiral
more ice cream into a cone or a dish than the average person can.
And it goes without saying that we always have the
freezer stocked with our favorite home-made vanilla ice cream flavor
from Jamboree. You can't go to bed without a dish of ice cream,
after all.

This message is after the fact. However, I hope
everyone had a safe 4th of July holiday weekend. My hard core fans have
seen me write the following many times. We all know what happens after
the 4th of July has come and gone. Fall will be here sooner than we want
it to be.
Corm knee high by the 4 of July; how about shoulder

By the way, how do you like our unplanned speed bump on

The Mayor Sez…
Here are some additional follow ups on our
Creek Days a few weeks ago.
Judge Richard Mohr (Class of ’49) commented that he had
been in many communities and Odebolt has the most beautiful residential
area of them all. Thanks, Judge Mohr. Makes all of our work worth while,
doesn’t it, folks?
It was nice to have US Congressman Steve King, State
Senator “Ket” Kettering, and State Representative Gary Worthan in our
parade among many others that make our parade a great success. I would
be remiss if I didn’t thank the ODC for naming Elaine and I the Grand
Marshals. A big thanks to Fred Coltrain for the use of his 1915 Model T.
I am also told that we even had a half a dozen Iowa
State Highway Patrolmen guarding us. Maybe they were here to accompany
our elected officials and stayed a tad late.
