The Mayor Sez…
There are reports of underage kids on the streets after curfew (11 p.m. week nights and 12 midnight weekends). If your underage (under 18) child is picked up be the police while on the street after curfew the parent will receive the citation ($100.00 fine). The main concern of the above situation is that we have a small group of underage kids getting into mischief around town late at night. If anyone sees any suspicious actions please call 668-2221. Thank you.
Don’t forget the donation for the fireworks and sponsorship of a coaster car for Odebolt Creek Days.

2005 Odebolt Creek Days

Plans for Creek Days 2005 are well under way.  This year's schedule will feature some old favorites as well as some exciting new additions.
In honor of the 10th Anniversary of Creek Days and the 125th Anniversary of the Odebolt Fire Department, the ODC and Fire Department will be presenting a spectacular fireworks show put on by J&M Productions on Sunday, June 19th, after the demo derby.
To help fund the fireworks show, the ODC will be accepting donations at several local businesses.  You can also donate your cans and bottles to this cause by dropping them in the can receptacle located at the old service station across from Monument Circle.
Another major event planned for this year is the 3rd Annual Coaster Car Races.  Now is the time to get your race cars built.  Specs are available on our web page or from Jason Wulf.  At last year's races, we had many late-entry drivers using borrowed cars, so this year, the ODC would like to provide a few cars for those spur-of-the-moment racers.  Anyone willing to help sponsor a car would have their name or company name placed on the race car.
They are also in need of a person or group willing to organize the Car & Pickup Show.  This is a great opportunity for a car enthusiast or anyone who just wants to get involved with Creek Days.
A tentative Creek Days schedule  is now posted on our website.  For further information or to make a donation, contact any ODC member.

Odebolt Cemetery Lot Owners Annual Meeting will be held Monday, May 2nd, 8 p.m. at the Tom Down residence, 709 Dewey Street.  The meeting is for election of officers and any other business that may come before the association.  The public is invited to attend.

Odebolt Receives Tree City USA Award - The National Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources-Forestry Bureau are proud to announce that the City of Odebolt has received the 2004-2005 Tree City USA award.
The awards were presented to each city by State Forester Mike Brandrup at the 15th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon, held at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines on April 7th, 2005.
The City of Odebolt was one of over 120 Iowa communities to qualify for the award.  To receive it the city must possess a city forester or an active city tree board, have a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita for its forestry program, and the mayor must issue a proclamation name a day as "Arbor Day".  (Pictured in The Chronicle are Jim Gustafsen, Elaine Rex, Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack, Mary Jeanne Thompson, State Forester Mike Brandrup and Iowa Urban Community Forestry Council Chair Keith Majors.)

Odebolt Woman receives Guide Dog - Mrs. Mark (Laura) Stangl of Odebolt graduated recently with a Yellow Labrador Retriever Guide Dog named Maggie at her side.  The duo completed a month of intensive training at Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., in San Rafael, California.  Graduation was Saturday, April 16, at the 11-acre campus, located 20 miles north of San Francisco.
Laura is a busy homemaker with six children under the age of 14.  Maggie is her first Guide Dog.
During training, the partners learn to work as a team, practicing safe travel techniques on stairways, elevators, crowded sidewalks and busy streets.  Guide Dogs learn to stop at all curbs and wait until their partners command them to go forward or turn.  They will disobey a commend to cross a street if traffic is approaching.  They guide people safely around pedestrians and obstacles, including overhead obstacles, and avoid distractions.  (Pictured in The Chronicle are Laura and her Guide Dog, Maggie.)

O-A Middle School Bands Perform at Large Group Contest -After receiving a “II” rating at large group contest in 2003 and a “I-“ in 2004, the O-AMS (7th & 8th) Band made it a goal to improve their rating again this year. They have been striving toward that goal every rehearsal and reached it on Saturday, April 23.
The band performed “Legends of the Yankee Clippers” and “Astrogate” before three judges at the middle school in Anthon. They received a “I+” and two “I‘s”, averaging to a “I“. We congratulate them on this accomplishment.
The Sixth Grade Band also performed at the large group contest to see what they could do. They played “Anasazi” and “Allegro” from Symphony #1 by Brahms and received a three “I’s” for their efforts. Awesome job!
We are very proud of these bands and you can hear them in concert at the middle school in Arthur on May 5 at 7:30.

OA 5th Grade Poster Contest - Odebolt Tuesday Club sponsored a 5th Grade Arbor Day poster contest. Committee members were Arlene Sundell, Jane Bair, and Thelma Schroeder.  Monetary awards were presented to Gabe Glienke first place, Samantha Bengford second place, and Matt Lantz third place. All of the students' posters were placed on display at the Odebolt Public Library. Their instructor is Kurt Hofmeister.
Arbor Day is April 29th and the students will receive instruction on trees and tree planting from a county extension forester. They hope to plant a tree on the Odebolt Memorial Walk Park as has been their practice for several years. Tuesday Club thanked the Fifth Grade, Mr. Hofmeister, and the OA School for their promotion of this worthwhile project.

O-A Prom 2005 "Paradise Island" - Prom attendees were greeted by valet parkers before entering "Paradise Island" the theme for this year's prom.  Palm trees, tropical huts and a large waterfall set the mood for an enjoyable evening.  The banquet meal began at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Junior class unveiling their senior slide show.  Special awards were presented to  the seniors through the evening.  A dance was held after the banquet ending at midnight.  After-prom "Survivor Night" activities were enjoyed as well as a hypnotist, subs, snacks and pop.  Prizes were distributed at the conclusion of the evening.

O-A Students Promenade at ONRC - Prior to the Grand March for the O-A Prom, a group of 25 to 30 high school students went to Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center to display their dresses, suits and Tuxes for the residents.  The students introduced themselves and visited with the residents for a few moments before leaving to attend the Prom.  Residents really appreciated seeing the kids all dressed up and ready to enjoy their night.

It's Time to Play Ball! - The weather is warming and it is once again time for baseball and softball to begin.  The Odebolt-Arthur Pee Wee Assoc.  helps children in kindergarten through fourth grade learn the fundamentals of the games.
It takes volunteers and money to keep the fields maintained and to purchase uniforms and equipment.  We are asking for donations to help.  Donations of $100 or more will be listed at the concession stand and on back of the girl's t-shirts.  (The Tri-County League in which the boys are involved does not allow advertising).  Please donate by May 2nd so the shirts may be ordered.  Send your donations to:

The Mayor Sez…

Last week I received an inquiry on the name “Myrell”.  According to a great- granddaughter he was a blacksmith in Odebolt around 1890’s to 1910 era.  If anyone can provide any information on the above name please contact me by phone or e-mail. Thank you.
As for last week’s article on gas and the price thereof, the general consensus of opinion seems to be as follows, “Why get all lathered up over something that we can’t do anything about?”  Or can we?
Oh, don’t forget the ODC, which does all the work of Odebolt Creek Days, needs donations for fireworks and sponsors for the coaster cars. Call Denny Sykes and volunteer.

ARBOR DAY PROCLAMATION

Whereas, trees reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife, and
Whereas, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products, and
Whereas, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community, and
Whereas, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal, and
Whereas, ODEBOLT has been recognized as a Tree City USA by The national Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting practices.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Ronald J. Rex, Mayor of the City of Odebolt, do hereby
proclaim April 29th as
ARBOR DAY
in the City of Odebolt, and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and
Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.

R.J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

PRAIRIE PEDLAR GARDENS
FEATURED IN MAGAZINE

The Prairie Pedlar Gardens in rural Odebolt are featured in the current issue of Garden Shed magazine that is now available on newsstands nationwide.
“I have visited Prairie Pedlar several times, and it is always such a pleasure to see Jane and Jack's beautiful gardens. I was pleased to be able to create a story about their garden folly for Garden Shed magazine, particularly since I'm an Iowa native myself.” comments Susan Appleget-Hurst, editor of the Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publication by Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, IA.
The story and five-page pictorial entitled, “Old Shed with a New Life”, features the restoration of an old ten-sided granary, which the Hogues have named their Garden Folly. It has become a delightful resting spot for garden visitors and houses their collections of garden antiques including McCoy pottery, floral handkerchiefs and flower frogs. According to owner, Jane Hogue, “It is a step back in time for everyone who is charmed by the Victorian’s love for flowers and garden objects.”
The Folly is open for viewing from May through September at the Prairie Pedlar during their regular shop hours: Monday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Mayor Sez…
In recent weeks there have been articles in the newspapers about OA students excelling in academics, sports, the arts, and music. Kids, we know how hard you have worked and practiced to attain these honors and awards and, I think, it is quite appropriate for the City to express our pride in your successful endeavors. May all of you be an inspiration to the young people that will follow in future years. We realize that none of these achievements could have happened without our fine staff of teachers, directors, coaches, and administrators. We salute! Go OA!
The ODC needs some help. They are looking for DONATIONS for the fireworks for Creek Days. Also, the ODC is looking for SPONSORS for the coaster cars, up to four cars, hopefully. Maybe you are not physically able to help, but you can donate money. It will be appreciated. Contact Denny Sykes.

=====NEWS BRIEFS - Read more about the below articles  in The Chronicle!

1-Cent Local Option Sales Tax - According to the website for the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance (IDRF) Sac County is one of only 13 counties in the state without any city/county local option sales tax.  In Sac County, according to the IDRF's formula, Odebolt would gain about $43,290 annually from an additional one cent local option tax.
A local option sales tax spreads the tax burden to visitors as well as residents of a town or county.  The tax is not charged on basic needs such as groceries, prescriptions, and gasoline.
Supporting a local option sales tax would mean that residents will be supporting projects here at home.  If you shop out-of-town you are more than likely paying a local option sales tax that benefits that community and provides funding for many of their municipal improvements.
[Note:  In the  April 4th Odebolt City Council Minutes it was moved to adopt a resolution in support of the Local Option Sales Tax.  The Council would allocate 20% for tax relief with the remaining 80% going toward swimming pool maintenance and upkeep, street repairs, storm and sanitary sewer repairs, improvements to historical buildings, Capitol Improvements and other improvements. A special countywide election is tentatively set for sometime in August.]
[Find out more about the Local Option Sales Tax by reading the Sac Economic and Tourism Development Newsletter - .pdf document - or on the front page of this week's The Chronicle.]

Named Athlete of the Year - First Sgt. Lawrence Fineran, a 1981 graduate of Odebolt-Arthur High School and son of Roger & Gerry Fineran of Odebolt, was named 2005 Depot Athlete of the Year on March 9th.
At 41, Fineran, who is Drill Instructor School first sergeant and chief instructor, holds a personal best time of 15:52 in the three-mile run and has a reputation of being one of the fastest runners aboard the Depot.

The Odebolt-Arthur Dance Squad performed their annual "Spring Fling" Dance Show on Saturday, April 9th.  The girls presented their coach, Rendee Wallace, with a framed artwork for all her hard work this season.  The show featured other schools including BCIG and Newell Fonda dance squads, as well as O-A elementary and middle school dancers.

Fertig Breaks 40-year-old Shot Put Record - Junior Mark Fertig broke one of OA's oldest track records, throwing the shot 48 feet, 3.75 inches at the Schaller-Crestland Relays in Early on April 5.
The previous mark had been set in 1963 when Ricky Meents tossed the orb 47 feet, 10 inches.
Only two other records were as old, including the Discus mark of Bill Einspahr, set in 1963, and the 200 Meter record set by Dan Hansen in 1953.
Despite breaking the school record, however, Fertig's toss was only good enough for second place at the meet. [Read more sports news in this issue.]

The Mayor Sez…
With the price of gas going sky-high, maybe ballistic, I am reminded of a slogan that was quite well known and posted everywhere during World War II. It went as follows. “Is this trip necessary?” There was gas rationing with most non-essential autos having an “A” sticker which allowed you 5 gal./week. With today’s prices 5 gal. Would cost about $11.00 and with a 25 mpg. vehicle you can travel 125 miles for the week---not bad, eh?
You say, “Get real, mayor, who can get along on those numbers?”
O.K, O.K., we’ll get you a “B” sticker which will allow you 10 gal./week for around $22.00 a week. How’s that sound? I KNOW I have most of the parents that have driving age teenagers on my side! (And the kids are saying, “It ain’t WW II!”)
