The Mayor Sez…
I see where Storm Lake had a big demonstration by students and others over the current immigration issue. I don’t have a problem with that, however, I do believe what Teddy Roosevelt said in 1907, “We have room for but one flag, the American flag, we have room for but one language here and that is the English language, and we have room for but sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to America and its people.”
A special meeting was held last week with contractors Dean Quirk and Roger Nielson (asbestos) to set a date to begin the destruction of the Lindquist building, Flogstad Bakery, and Keller’s Barber Shop. The City Attorney, Joe Heidenreich, was present to advise on any legal matters pertaining to the action. The week of May 8th was set to begin the project. Bill Tysor will be the overall project coordinator.

WHO IS THAT? - Can anyone identify this cowboy from a half-century ago?  All I can tell you is that it was submitted by his mom!

(Tuesday, April 25 - I got an email from Chuck Hanson correctly identifying our cowboy as Jim Raasch.  Chuck said he printed it out and showed it to Don Cowlham, who said, "It looks like Jim Raasch."  Guess he hasn't changed all that much, huh? - Web Master)

The Mayor Sez ...
Everybody knows about pizza deliveries to your doorstep in the larger communities that have Pizza Huts, Godfather's, and etc.  Guess what?  Fifty years ago you could call in your grocery order by 9 a.m. and the groceries would be at your doorstep by 11:30 a.m.  True story!  It happened right here in the 'bolt.
As a sequel to my story about the 70 to 90 year old ladies posing in the buff for a calendar to raise money to save an old building, at bridge club last eve one of the ladies suggested that some of our 70 to 90 year old MEN pose in the buff for a calendar to raise money for our new entry signs.  All of the ladies present thought that it would raise a "sensational" amount of $'s.  Any volunteers???

The public is invited to attend an Open House at the Community Center from 4:30-5:30 p.m., with the Grand March beginning at 5:45 until 6:30 p.m.  There will be a tent outside the building where the guests will be greeted by valet parkers, their names will be announced by Jim Mickelson, and they will enter the building on a red carpet.  To relieve congestion inside the building, we ask the public to observe the Grand March from under the tent along both sides of the red carpet.
The banquet will begin at 6:30 with appetizers.  The meal will be served at 7:00 with a choice of New York strip steak, smoked Windsor chop, or glazed chicken breast, with seasoned red potatoes, buttered green beans with almonds, crescent roll, and an ice cream sundae for dessert.

The Mayor Sez…

Get this! Twelve gutsy grannies, aged 76 to 94, took it all off to pose for a calendar in their birthday suits for a fund raiser effort to save an old building in their home county of Randolph, Indiana. (I don’t suppose we have anyone in the ‘bolt that wants to raise money to save an old building?)  Incidentally, they raised the $20,000.00 needed to save the building, practically overnight. Hmmmm.
Now then, you have been reading all my prater about fog and then 100 days later rain, or snow. O.K., O.K., it defies all scientific logic, but you’ve made me a believer!!

Odebolt Bum’s Jungle but a Memory…..
Odebolt has lost a landmark, “Bum’s Jungle”. Anyone who has lived in Odebolt, or close, will remember it.
The bums rode the train and stopped to work at the Adams Ranch. They had a large kettle which they placed on a bonfire of sticks and logs. Empty cans were plentiful, lying all over the ground.
Children were scared to go there because the bums were not dressed well and were dirty looking, as well as bearded.
A big stopping place for the bums to eat was St. Martin’s Convent. The sisters would give them food and they would sit on the steps of the convent and eat it. The bums had markings on trees and posts such as “a good place to get food”.
There was a gathering at Britt, Iowa, for the crowning of “The King of the Hobos”. A “hobo stew” was served to all. The king of the hobos stopped at D&D Skelly Station [in Odebolt] yearly.
After the bums quit coming [to “Bum’s Jungle”], the kids started going there and built forts. They would drag everything from home—chairs, buckets, dishes—and a lot of cigarette butts could be found there too!
Most of the summer the kids could be found there or the swimming pool. Generations have played there and remember the good times.
Our family, as well as many others, have returned there to show the grandchildren where their dads and moms played. One of our grandsons found a heel from a shoe and was wanting to take it home, but dad said “no!”; he had to leave it because it was part of the “Bum’s Jungle” heritage. So many memories!
The picture [of the “Bum’s Jungle” in this weeks’ Chronicle] was taken in 2005. As you can see, the trees are dying and it has become an eyesore, so it’s time for “Bum’s Jungle” to go.
We’re glad to see Lundell Plastics are sprucing up our town.
