The Mayor Sez…
Someone that read my article last week asked me what I meant with my slogan, “So much to do and so little time to do it”. I am committed to the task of tearing down some dilapidated buildings, both downtown and residential, and it is taking more time than I like, however, it WILL happen! I have qualified Odebolt to be a recipient of the DNR’s Brownfield Grant which deals with the asbestos problem (and the cost of removal thereof ).  Note: when we were doing the grants for the Memorial Walk Park it took some time, however, the rewards were worth the wait.
Our new ODEBOLT entry sign project that Vance and Howard are spearheading can have far reaching and very positive effects for our City.
The B&E activity that we have recently been experiencing has not been limited to just Odebolt, however, our police dept. in conjunction with the sheriff’s dept. are monitoring the situation and are confident of bringing the perps to justice. Sad, but true, the cities don’t have a #1 claim on crime anymore. Our way of life in rural America is constantly being threatened. Meth, sex offenders, burglars, and etc. are at large and we need constant vigilance to thwart these perps. The cities use a “neighborhood watch” system and I certainly encourage all of us to do the same. Call our County Communications Center toll free by dialing 668-2221 to report any suspicious activity that you may see and a police cruiser will be sent to investigate. What you may think as “trivial” may not be “trivial”. Thank you.
     From the ‘Bolt
     R. J. Rex, Mayor

KATIE BELL PLAYS FOR NGC

The governors of the fifty United States of America converged on the city Des Moines, Iowa the weekend of July 15-17 for the National Governors' Conference. The first evening they were treated to Iowa music and Iowa food on the lawn of our state's capitol.
The members of the 2004-2005 All-State Orchestra had the auspicious privilege of performing for the occasion. Also invited for the concert were two family members and their respective instrumental instructors. Katie Bell, a member of the Odebolt-Arthur Concert Band, was a member of the French Horn section in the orchestra.
The orchestra rehearsed July 14 and 15. They stayed in dorms on the Drake University campus and were bussed to rehearsals and provided with meals. The group also spent the final afternoon at Adventureland.
The orchestra played "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key, "Largo" from The New World Symphony by Dvorak, "Wildflowers" from Rhapsody No. 1 by Joshua Reznicow , and "Cappriccio Espanõl" by Rimsky-Korsakov. The orchestra was directed by Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt who is on the music faculty of the University of Northern Iowa. Joshua Reznicow is a graduate of UNI and teaches in Cedar Rapids. Dvorak, although from Czechoslovakia, lived for a time in Spillville, Iowa and wrote his New World Symphony based on what he saw and experienced there.
Parents and instructors congregated in the Henry Wallace Building , went through security, and were escorted to the concert. Each person received an official NGA blanket to sit on during the concert and take home as a souvenir. They were also treated to refreshments. Attending from Odebolt-Arthur were Katie's parents, Pat and Jon Bell, and her instructor, Barbara Votrobeck.

The Mayor Sez . . .
I have had a peek at the proposed new "Odebolt" entry sign and from what I understand the first one will go in across from Lundell Plastics on the west entry to Odebolt on Hwy 175.  Vance Lundell has indicated to the City that he would sponsor the first sign and would hope that others would join in to complete the 4-sign project.  Vance has a few ideas that would cut the labor costs so we'll see what happens there.  Also, Howard Hustedt has agreed to be Co-Chair along with Vance on the above project.
All of us have driven through small towns that have impressive signs that show off the name of their city.  These signs also show the pride of their people.  If we can bring this project to conclusion, we too, can be proud of our new city signs, on all 4 highway entrances!  I think the Tuesday Club would love to have a new sign to care for.  They sure have done wonders with the old one on the east entry to Odebolt.  They even pay for the lighting.  How 'bout that?
Generally, I can sum up the whole sign project by a simple saying -"first impressions are lasting ones."
     From the 'bolt
     R.J. Rex, Mayor

P.S. I have decided to run for re-election this fall with the following slogan, "So much to do and so little time to do it."

The promotion utilized eleven billboards in the Des Moines metro area which were in place during the months of May, June and the first half of July.
Consumer demand for beef jumped sharply in 2004.  "The news on demand has been good, and it's certainly encouraging to see local beef producers promoting their product in one of Iowa's largest consumer areas," says Terri Carstensen, beef producer from Odebolt, and vice chairman of the Iowa Beef Industry Council.  www.iabeef.org

O-A Graduate Becomes New Deputy - Fred Anderson, 34, of Ida Grove, became the new Ida County Deputy on Monday, August 1st.  Anderson is a 1989 graduate of Odebolt-Arthur High School.
Anderson served in the Army Reserves for 13 years.  But for the past two years he has been a member of the Ida County Reserve Officer program, serving as captain the past year.
Anderson is scheduled to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy this winter.  A photograph of Anderson courtesy of the Ida County Courier, appears in this issue of The Chronicle .

Workshop Offered on Crop Production - Can you envision enjoying fresh, locally-grown tomatoes and cucumbers for six months rather than three? This is a reality, not a dream, as more producers around the country are using "high tunnels" to extend the growing season of horticultural crops. It has become a popular and profitable method to produce high-value crops. High tunnels are simple, tall, plastic-covered structures used for the production of fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, and many other crops. They resemble greenhouses but cost less to erect and operate.
Bill Campbell, a third generation owner of a fruit and vegetable business near Harlan, Iowa, is growing tomatoes under a 96-foot long high tunnel for the first time this year. He is so impressed with the crop and production that he intends to construct another one this fall.
Bill will be one of three speakers at a workshop on horticulture production in high tunnels to be held at the Iowa State University Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm near Lewis, Iowa on Sept. 12, 2005. Workshop participants will be able to tour a new high tunnel and bio-heated greenhouse.

Cousins Win Triathlon - On Saturday, July 2, 2005, during Sac City's Chautauqua Days celebration, these three young people [pictured in The Chronicle] were the victorious team in the annual triathlon competition.
Scott Sorensen gave the team a strong start, finishing 2nd place in the 500 meter swim at the Sac City Aquatic Center.  Scott then tagged off to Tyler Leinbaugh for the biking portion of the race, which went south of town and back for 10K or 6.2 miles.  Tyler took the lead quickly in his leg before tagging off to Katie Freemen for the final 5K or 3.1 mile run to complete the event.  Katie remained in the lead the whole time, bringing home a 1st place finish for the team.
The three team members are all cousins.  Tyler is the son of Mike Leinbaugh and Connie Leinbaugh and grandson of Roger and Ruth Neville of Odebolt.  Scott and Katie are the grandchildren of Beverly (Neville) Kolbe of Sac City.

There were more than 60 kids signed up for the summer reading program.  As of July 29, the kids had read 2,954 books and Bell said she anticipated they would exceed last year's total.  A story hour was planned for August 4 and a field trip for August 11.

Sheriff's Department to Hold Kids Clinic - The Sac County Sheriff's Department along with Larry Beckman Motors will be conducting a Commitment to Kids clinic.
During the clinic your child will have their digital photo taken.  This, along with current vital information, will be saved to a computer disc for your safe keeping.
This program is endorsed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.  In an emergency the information on this disc can help law enforcement if your child is missing.
The clinic will be held at the Odebolt-Arthur School, August 16th, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. during school registration.  There are no fees for participating and all children in the family are eligible regardless if they are of school age.

From the Superintendent's Desk - Along with the changes of having all the students in the Odebolt center this year, there have also been a few changes in personnel.  (See at www.odebolt-arthur.net )
Parents:  when sending children to school please label all school supplies, backpacks and other items with the child's full name.
Dial the Message Center at 668-2555 for schedule changes and announcements.

The flags around the downtown area will be taken down after Labor Day.
The Chamber will be again judging the Odebolt-Arthur High School¹s annual Homecoming Hallway Decorating Contest. We will hold a pizza party for the winning hallway.

ARE YOU AWARE that Sac County is one of only nine Iowa counties that don't have the 1-cent local option sales tax in place?
A YES vote on September 27th will benefit our town as well as the county.  It can ease the burden of raising property taxes and infuse money into the town's budget to carry on much-needed projects.
In Odebolt 20%  of this tax would go to Property Tax Relief, and the remaining 80% to repairs, upkeep, and capital improvements.
The Mayor says, "When we go about anywhere else we are lining the pockets of other cities."  A Yes vote will help line Odebolt's pockets!

Lundell Spearheads New Entrance Signs
Vance Lundell, President of Lundell Plastics Corporation located along highway 175 in Odebolt, met with the City recently to offer his sponsorship of a new entrance sign for Odebolt to be located across from his factory.  The sign will welcome travelers from the west.  Lundell received a whole-hearted endorsement from the City.
Lundell and the city would also like to get the community involved to sponsor three more entrance signs for the north, east and south entrances.  The project will cost from $8,000 to $10,000.
First impressions are lasting ones, and new signs would certainly spruce up Odebolt's image!

The Mayor Sez…
Just when I thought I would have nothing to write about I am informed of a couple of B & E’s and a pornographer on the loose (an artist kind of pornographer that does his/her work on garage doors).  The latter perp reminds me of the “lone haranguer” on the “Wizard of Id”. Can you imagine a “lone haranguer” here in Odebolt? Both of the above items have our attention and we WILL apprehend the B & E perps.  It seems as though there is a correlation between the price of gas and the number of burglaries. Hmmmmm!  As for the apprehension of our “lone haranguer” I would suggest keeping an eye on your garage door.
Please contact the police dept. if you would like assistance and if you have suggestions that would discourage a “B & E”.
