The Mayor Sez…
Due to the fact that we have so many rumors flying
around, I am going to see if I can turn a few of the rumors into fact.
First, about the proposed ethanol plant:
NO, the City of Odebolt will not provide water to the plant. They
plan to have their own wells.
YES, the proposed ethanol plant will use more corn than is produced
in Sac County.
YES, the plant could employ up to 50 people, maybe more.
Now, about some other items.
YES, there is a curfew for 17 year old and under; 11 p.m. week
nights and 12 midnight on week ends, unless with a parent.
YES, there is underage drinking around the area. The problem is,
what parent is going to turn in their own kid??
YES, the swimming pool is closed.
I hope all of the above has been helpful. Now then, you can be
helpful, too, and here is how. When you witness an infraction of the law, no
matter what, call 712-668-2221 toll free. The call will go to our new
communication center and they will act accordingly. When you make a complaint
at City Hall, you will be provided a form to fill out. When your complaint has
been checked out you will be notified as to disposition thereof. Thank you.

many young people whom she has mentored through the 4-H program. It’s
wonderful to have adults that are willing to give all of that time to add
another dimension to the learning and growth of the youth in our community.
The time and energy that Ellen has put into 4-H has turned out many good young

Patten Flag Flies Over Lake City Sesquicentennial
A significant flag flew over Lake
City's historic Central School during Lake City's September 1st through
3rd Sesquicentennial Celebration. The flag was presented to the
family of Myrne "Ted" Patten at his death in Lake City in October 2004,
after which the family bequeathed the flag to Central School. The town's
150th birthday celebration was the first time the flag has been flown.
Odebolt residents may recall that the Patten family
lived near Odebolt during World War II, and that 8 Patten brothers and
their father served in the U.S. Navy, making it the largest family unit to
serve at one time.
Dale Sporleder, nephew to the Pattens, will soon
publish a 400-page book about the Patten family with his cousin, Clarence
Patten.
You may read more about the Patten brothers at The
Odebolt History Pages. Here is a link to a
photo of all 8 brothers and their father.
Thanks to Dale Sporleder for submitting news of the
flag. - Barb Horak, webmaster

ODEBOLT OBSERVER,
VOL. 2. NO. 9. AUGUST 31, 1881
The President Recovering
The whole country is rejoiced at the tenor of the dispatches received
for several days past from Washington, giving the cheering
intelligence that the President is recovering. Unless some new
complication arises, his physicians predict his recovery. A universal
cheer of thankfulness will greet the intelligence that he is out of
danger. [President James Garfield was shot by an assassin on July 2,
1881.]
--The new 50 barrel cistern of Burleigh & Summerwill, under their side
walk, is completed, is full, and is a capital thing for convenience
and protection in case of fire. We commend an examination of it by
others and hope they will be and do likewise.
--Mr. P. L. Davenport, of Clinton county, gave us a pleasant call
Saturday. He came out to this locality some six years ago--before the
railroad was built or Odebolt was thought of--and bought a section of
land within a few miles of this place, on which his son-in-law, Mr.
David Correll, another Clinton county man, has opened a farm. Mr.
Davenport says the development of the country since he first visited
it is most marvelous, and so well pleased is he with it that he will
make other investments here before he returns east. Mr. Correll's
crops this season, especially those of corn and flax are excellent,
and he as well as Mr. D. are well satisfied with Sac county.
--Mr. T. J. Marks, secretary of the Sac county fair, informs us that
the proprietors of the Iowa Homestead offer that paper one year for
the best two pounds of butter, and the same premium for the heaviest 6
ears of corn. The premium for the best looking baby, will be a copy of
the Farm, Garden and Household, the baby to be judged on the last day
of the fair at Sac City. Here is a splendid chance for a good premium
on dairy and family products for which we hope farmers and others in
all part of the county will compete. We don't know about the butter
and are not certain about the corn, but we are quite sure Odebolt or
vicinity will show the best baby.

With school in session I am asking everyone to pay
special attention, while driving, to each and every intersection for kids
crossing the street. Heed the stop signs, the yield signs, and try not to
exceed the 25 MPH residential speed limit. If we do all of the above our kids
have a good chance of surviving an accident-free school year. Please remember
that our kids are our future.
My thought for the week……I was always taught to respect
my elders, but it keeps getting harder to find one.

New Ethanol Plant Near Odebolt
Willmark Energy is pleased to announce its plan
to construct an ethanol plant on land recently purchased in the vicinity of
Arthur/Odebolt, Iowa.
This state of the art facility will have the capacity
to produce over 120 million gallons of ethanol per year (MGPY), utilizing more
than 45 million bushels of corn.
"On behalf of Willmark Energy, we are excited to bring
an ethanol plant to the Arthur/Odebolt area," said Mark Schmidt, CEO.
Producing this renewable, clean
burning fuel will create high quality jobs for the local community, and
provide a new market for regional corn growers. It will also generate
cornbased co-products, which are excellent feed ingredients for area livestock
producers.
Mayor R.J. Rex of Odebolt expressed his enthusiasm for
the Willmark Energy plant in a recent statement: "The City of Odebolt and the
surrounding area are quite excited about the proposed ethanol plant that is
planned for our area. We are in the heart of corn country and it ultimately
should equate to a good and fair price for our corn producers."
Ethanol is a winning proposition on many levels. The
benefits abound for agriculture and the economy, and this plant (and
facilities like it) will help our nation reduce its dependence on foreign
sources of energy, and reduce carbon monoxide emissions from our vehicles.
Willmark Energy will proceed with construction of its
Arthur/Odebolt plant in the first quarter of 2007.
Firefighters to help MDA with "Fill the Boot" Sept. 1 and 2 - Odebolt
firefighters will participate in a fundraiser Friday and Saturday, September
1st and 2nd to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and "Jerry's Kids".
They will be at the intersection of Highways 175 and 39 asking motorists to
help "Fill the Boot" with donations. MDA helps children and adults who
are affected by any of 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA's
comprehensive medical services and research programs.
2006-2007 Rotary Calendars now available - Families with school age
children received their free calendars at school registration. Other
members of the community can pick up calendars at any of the participating
business sponsors. The calendars list local community events and provide
a comprehensive listing of local business telephone numbers.
Due to rising costs, the Rotary would appreciate the
public limiting the calendars to one per Odebolt-Arthur household.
Anyone interested in assisting the Rotary in defraying the cost of producing
these free calendars can make a donation by contacting Rotary President
Kirstan Bieber at the Chronicle, Secretary Tom Down, or at the Rotary meeting
Tuesdays at noon at Caroll's Kitchen.
Beckman Motors helps O-A Boosters - (Pictured in this issue) Larry
Beckman Motors helped raise $785 for the Odebolt-Arthur Booster Club through
Chrysler's popular golf program "Drive for the Chrysler." The golf
benefit was held at the Spring Lake Country Club on July 22 during the Club
2-Ball Tourney. Chrysler offered the beautiful new Chrysler 300C SRT8 as
the hole-in-one prize car. Exciting competition for additional
tournament awards provided by Chrysler added to the fun. Larry Beckman
Motors supplied the Chrysler vehicles and volunteered time to assist with the
fundraising drives. Chrysler made a $5 donation to the O-A Booster Club for
every test drive.

Death Notice: Lola
(Albrecht) Marron, 70, of Odebolt died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006,
at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Odebolt, with burial in Odebolt Cemetery.
From the Des Moines Register
on-line archives:
August 18, 1936 - The brutal heat wave of 1936 had Iowa sizzling once
again. Only five cities did not report high temperatures surpassing
100. Des Moines and Iowa City hit 108; and Cedar Rapids, Corning and
Atlantic topped out at 111. The state's hot spots were Odebolt and
Sac City at 113 ...
School Days
(From the
Odebolt

Some of us of a certain age were taught by Rosmer Bruce and Frank Shaw
when we were in high school in Odebolt. Did you know that Miss Bruce
and Mr. Shaw were in the same class during their own Odebolt school
days?
Read the student-written calendar from their freshman year in
Odebolt, including impertinent comments about the teachers,
extra-curricular activities of the students, and photos.
Then check out the
1915 Freshman Class History, including a class picture with
Miss Bruce and Mr. Shaw identified! A certain esteemed lady who
should know (she was on the school board when these two were teaching)
says that Miss Bruce and Mr. Shaw had an academic rivalry going during
their own school years.

The Mayor Sez…
I am happy to announce that Verna Mae Schwaller has
accepted the position of curator for the Odebolt Museum. The City Council has
given unanimous approval and along with it a great big thank you for stepping
up. We Salute!!
Recently, I met with the DOT to outline the main parts
of the 9-mile resurfacing project that will happen on both sides and thru
Odebolt in 2007. They say it will be done in segments; West of Odebolt, thru
Odebolt, and East of Odebolt, but not necessarily in that order. The Highway
39 intersection (by Cubby’s) will be open at all times. The DOT estimates that
it will take 10 days to do the intersection and ‘stop and go’ lights will be
used. All temporary business entries and exits will have a rock lay-down. A
pilot car will be provided while the roadways are being prepped. The entire
project is to be done in 96 working days. The Spring anhydrous season should
be over before they start closing sections of the project (end of April). We
will monitor this item very closely. All in all, the DOT has ‘raised the bar’
in cooperating with the City and I have expressed our appreciation. Detours,
when necessary, will be 3 miles South of Odebolt for both East and West
traffic. Hopefully, the project should be completed by Sept.1, 2007. The
bottom line will be a badly needed new highway, both east and west of our
City.

NEW ODEBOLT LOGO?

The above is a logo design that was shown to the Odebolt
City Council on August 7. Vance Lundell of Lundell Plastics Corp. stated that Scott Winey at Bluespace Creative designed the logo, which could be used on all
official city correspondence or wherever needed. Lance felt that it
would be a good idea to use the same design on the entry signs so the
"look" for the town would be consistent. The design needs to be
approved by the council before it is implemented.

I am appalled and nearly at a loss for words over why
someone would destroy a young tree. I am told that Lake View lost 20 young
trees to vandalism and we have had two young trees destroyed on a business
property. Acts of this nature display a pent –up hostility that is not natural
and is unacceptable. Please use that cell phone and call the authorities if
you should ever witness an unlawful act of this nature. Enough said!!
If we get a little more rain we may have to crank up

Fish Kills in Area Counties - The DNR is investigating fish kills in
Ida, Clay and Lyons Counties. Ammonia levels in Odebolt Creek near
Arthur in Ida County, ranged from 7.5 to 10 parts per million. Levels
from 3 to 5 parts per million can be toxic to fish.
The DNR observed a small number of dead minnows and
chubs. Recent heavy rains likely washed manure into many northwest Iowa
streams. With low-flow conditions, due to the dry weather, dissolved
oxygen levels are low. Manure decomposing releases ammonia further
depleting available oxygen in the water, suffocating fish.
Sac County Extension - Nominations for five seats on the Sac County

Memoirs
of Oscar F. Peterson, first
installment, taken from a booklet he wrote in 1952 about his life.
We are publishing
these excerpts because we felt that Oscar's description of life in Sweden,
the accounts of his immigration in 1897 and starting out in a new country
would be interesting to those from Odebolt who have Swedish immigrant
ancestors. Many of his experiences would be similar to those of other
Swedes that immigrated in the late 1800's to early 1900's.
Oscar's granddaughter, Barbara (Peterson) Michael, came to Odebolt
from California earlier this week to stay at the Hattie Grace Boarding
House, research her family and visit family graves. Bonnie and I met
her and her husband, showed her around and helped her find local
resources.
Barbara had visited Odebolt about 50 years ago as a
teenager, and although her grandfather's house is now gone, she enjoyed
seeing the sights again. The couple walked the Memorial Walk Park and
thought the plaques and history were a great idea! We gave them a
tour of the museum and Barbara was delighted to find the museum's souvenir
Christmas ornaments to take home to her children as gifts.
Small town life is very different from life in the
cities of California, but it appeared that the Michaels enjoyed their stay
in Odebolt.
