WHO IS RUNNING FOR
SCHOOL BOARD THIS YEAR?
School board election is
Tues., September 9.
School Board Candidates--Odebolt-Arthur has two board members
with expiring terms: Deb Bengford of Arthur and Traci Bengford of Odebolt.
Both seats are for three-year terms and both Bengfords are seeking
re-election. Also filing papers for the positions are Jeana Arbegast and
Ann Hoefling.
Below we have published articles submitted by the
four candidates.
DEB BENGFORD
I have chosen to seek reelection to the Odebolt-Arthur School Board
with an intense commitment to put education first for the students in
our communities.
I can say without a doubt that the past six years of
service on the O-A School Board along with the decision to participate
in IASB learning activities, Delegate Assembly, Annual Convention, and
Leadership Academy have provided me with a depth of knowledge and
understanding that I feel can enhance my decision making for O-A. This
could be considered a difficult and challenging time to serve on the
board. There are continuous discussions and necessary action that can
quickly take a board member out of their comfort zone. However, with
time put into studying the facts and figures along with the changes
that are taking place in our communities with demographics and the
economy, I believe that we can create a positive future for our
district. I enjoy working through the challenges that come with
serving on the school board and will advocate to keep students and
their access to quality education first in our work.
I see transportation as an issue now and in the next
few years while working through the fine details of meeting "need" vs
"expectation" in the whole grade sharing planning. This will be
coupled with fluctuating fuel costs and will naturally call for
continuous close monitoring. This ties together with the general issue
of economics - impacting our schools just as dramatically as it does
the average household. Over the course of the past six years, we have
made significant financial changes, such as the closing of the school
building in Arthur, reduction of administration, reduction of staff
through attrition, and sharing of costs with neighboring districts.
This has all been done through planning for the present and the
future. At the same time we have made great strides in utilizing PPEL
and SILO funds to make improvements to the Odebolt facility. Planning
will continue to be key in dealing with these issues.
There is constant change all around us - we need to
not be resistant to it, but rather learn and work through it. I also
see education as an issue. I propose that we continue to raise our own
standards in education, promoting rigor and relevance. We have a great
system from AK through high school and with planning we will continue
that tradition.
As the adults in the community, we too can concentrate
on educating ourselves with the issues that our great district faces.
Please ask questions, study the facts, and remember that if you look
hard enough, you can always find the negatives - the same is true if
you look hard enough for the positives. You can find many if you
choose.
- Deb Bengford
TRACI BENGFORD
I am running for re-election to the Odebolt-Arthur School Board
because I am dedicated to the responsibilities of providing the best
possible education for the students of our district. I believe that
the whole-grade sharing decisions that we have made as a school board,
were difficult, but necessary, in order to continue to provide the
best possible learning experiences, as well as to ensure the longevity
of our district.
The biggest issues facing the school district center around the
whole grade sharing agreement with BCIG. Cooperation, transportation,
and budget concerns will all be a part of this conversation.
Cooperation: It is my hope that all Odebolt and Arthur residents
recognize that our school board would not have come to this whole
grade sharing decision if it was not in the best interest of our
students. The opportunities before us far outweigh any negativity and
criticism. I encourage all parents and patrons of the district to
provide positive support to our school through this process. I also
look forward to seeing the two student councils work together to plan
and coordinate many school activities into a combined tradition that
they can be proud of.
Transportation: O-A students will have many advantages in the whole
grade sharing process. Fortunately, they will remain in Odebolt from
Kindergarten through 8th grade. Transportation, whether sharing or
not, will be a major concern for the district with gas and utility
prices on a continual upward rise.
Budget: Throughout the process of arriving at our whole grade
sharing agreement, I have listened to the recommendations from our
teaching staff and administration, and attended numerous school board
and CAC meetings. I have come to realize that the whole grade sharing
agreement with BCIG can be a win-win situation. If we do not do
anything, we would be facing academic limitations, a budget nightmare,
and fewer opportunities for our students. As the number of students in
our district continues to decline, we will need to take advantage of
all incentives that the state legislature offers to school districts
that whole grade share.
As we look into the future, I see exciting opportunities for our
school district. We have an excellent school facility, and I am proud
of the updates that have been made in recent years. As a school board,
we have always kept our students best interests in mind. I want the
very best academic opportunities for our students and would not have
been doing my job if I hadn't pursued that as my top priority. I would
appreciate your vote on September 9th.
- Traci Bengford
ANN HOEFLING
Hello, My name is Ann Hoefling. I am a candidate for the
Odebolt-Arthur School Board.
For those of you who don't know me, I have lived in Odebolt for all
but the first two weeks of my life. I went to St. Martins Catholic
School through the fourth grade and attended the public school from
fifth grade until I graduated in 1975. I am married to Pat Hoefling
who also attended Odebolt-Arthur from kindergarten until he graduated
in 1972. We have nine children. Seven of the nine started and
graduated from O-A. I still have two children in the O-A school
system, a senior and a sophomore. I also have several grandchildren
that will attend this school.
I worked for the O-A school system as a cook and bus driver for 4
years. I also taught high school students at St. Martins church as
part of the Catholic Youth Organization for several years. Currently,
I own and operate our family lawn mowing service. My husband is a
spray applicator for UAP in Odebolt.
I believe our school system has done an exceptional job of
educating our students and want to make sure our education stays at
the highest standard possible. Seven of my children have gone on to
college without any trouble. That tells me our teachers and
administrators are doing a great job.
I would like to be a part of developing the future of our school. I
feel we need to look at all possibilities and do what is best for our
students and our community. We also need to make sure the benefits
outweigh the inconveniences of sharing. We have a lot to be proud of
and I feel we need to do everything in our power to keep education as
our #1 priority - we owe this to our kids!
I am open to any questions if you would like to visit with me about
anything. Please feel free to call my home at 712-668-2696. Evenings
are the best time to reach me.
Thank you,
Ann Hoefling,
O-A School Board Candidate
JEANA ARBEGAST
Hi, my name is Jeana Arbegast and I would like to introduce myself as
a candidate for the Odebolt-Arthur School Board. This is my first time
running for the school board and I see this as an opportunity to
invest in our children’s futures.
A little background information on me is that I am a lifelong
resident of Odebolt. I am the daughter of Lee and Karen Hemer of
Odebolt and graduated in 1996 from Odebolt-Arthur Community School. I
then attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake where I graduated
in 2000 with my Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Psychology.
During my Senior year of college and following graduation, I was
employed as a School Liaison Officer and Juvenile Tracker. With these
jobs, I worked with youths who were involved with the Juvenile Courts,
Department of Human Services and that the school systems had
determined to be “At-Risk” students.
In 1997, I married Jared Arbegast, the son of Jerry & Angie
Arbegast of Arthur. We were blessed with four children who will be in
6th grade, 4th grade, and 2nd grade this fall, and our youngest who is
a preschooler.
I am currently a stay at home mom with these four busy kids and
Jared is the owner of Jared Arbegast trucking. I help to organize and
manage the Mat Rats Wrestling Club in Odebolt and the Odebolt-Arthur
Youth Wrestling Tournament, volunteer in my kids classrooms as a Room
Parent, and have run the Bill Riley Talent Show during Odebolt Creek
Days.
Providing quality educational opportunities, not just for my
children but all students of this district, is one of the reasons I
have chosen to run for the O-A School Board.
I believe that the importance of a strong education now, will see
them on their way to becoming happy, capable, and productive adults. I
support the student body, alumni, and community being involved in the
process of change and to have ownership in shaping the joint ventures
of our future.
The goal is to involve a large number of the students, staff, and
community in developing any plan for the future. One without the other
makes for a very shaky relationship, not a long lasting partnership.
We have a wonderful educational system and pride here at
Odebolt-Arthur and I believe that it should not now disappear in this
time of change.
I hope that this helps everyone to learn a little more about me and
what my views are as I run for the Odebolt-Arthur School Board. Please
feel free to contact me with any questions about my views and
positions because I would love to discuss them.
Thank You!
Jeana Arbegast

of the kindergarten class of 1909,
99 years ago! (Link will open
in a new browser window.)
Note from web editor: Bonnie, who usually does the history
blurb every week, is on vacation, so I'm writing this week)
I remember sitting around that circle in the
old schoolhouse kindergarten room in 1954. My teacher was Miss
Kennedy, and I thought it was so neat having our own rugs for rest
time. I loved finally being able to go to school just
like my three older siblings.
I'm not sure when Miss Kennedy retired, but I do remember her
as being very old. She was quite shaky, and pretty cranky with
us little kids. When she wrote alphabet letters on the
chalkboard her letters were shaky. I got a scolding from her one day.
She called on me to go up to the chalkboard and write the letter "A"
as she had demonstrated for us. I carefully wrote "A" with the
chalk using the same shakiness. She was mad at me, thinking I
was making fun of her! Hey - I was just an innocent
kindergartner and I only wanted to do it "just like teacher." I
was so ashamed at her scolding and I cried. Maybe that was her last
year teaching; I don't remember.
Martha Kennedy and her sister lived kitty-corner across
from the school on the northeast corner of 5th and Maple. I'm sure
many people also remember Miss Kennedy as their first teacher.
Does anyone know when she retired, and at what age?
- Barb
Click for a photo of the old schoolhouse
From Deb Loger: think Miss Kennedy's last year was after my
kindergarten class, which would have been 1959-60. My class started
kindergarten
in the new building. I remember my dad telling me in later years that
he had her as an teacher but I think he said it was eighth grade.
From Bonnie Ekse: Bart Ogden told me a few years ago that
Martha Kennedy was already retired when, because of a teacher
shortage, he persuaded her to teach kindergarten in Odebolt. I've run
across a few news bits in old Odebolt newspapers about Miss Kennedy
being home to visit her parents during holidays. It seems to me that
Sioux City was one place she taught. My guess is that she probably
retired again when increasing kindergarten enrollment made it
necessary to add an afternoon class in addition to the morning-only
class that existed in the early 1950's.
I have my own story about being disciplined by Miss
Kennedy. Bobby H. had just had a new crew cut, and I couldn't resist
running my hand over the top of his head as we were seated around a
table. Miss Kennedy lifted me from my chair, shook me, and sat me down
again. Maybe we remember these incidents because we were eager for
Miss Kennedy's approval and were heartbroken when we were scolded. My
overall impression of kindergarten is of a happy time.
As you entered the old school building from the north
door, the kindergarten room was the first one on the right on the
first floor. Miss Kennedy just walked across the street from the home
she shared with Mrs. Ballard, her sister, and walked up the sidewalk
to the school house door.
Raymond Smith (Class of 1936) turns 90
I have an item that hopefully you could
include in the news on the Odebolt website. I received a note from
Helen Whitaker, Raymond Smith's sis, today and she asked that I
contact you to put the news of his birthday on the site.
Raymond Smith will be 90 years old, Sept. 9th. He
graduated from Odebolt High School in 1936. Helen thought that there
may be a few of his classmates still around that would be interested
in this. Ray's cousins and his sis will be celebrating his birthday
with a party Sept. 13th in Reno, NV where he and his wife live. Ray is
in very good health and still plays golf frequently.
Ray grew up on the farmstead that was across the road from
the old Methodist Church that used to be on the north side of the road
4 and a half miles east of Odebolt. I think Marshall Fox had sent a
photo in of that church a while ago. Ray's home place is now owned by
Dick Profit.
Thanks much for putting this on the site.

The
Mayor Sez…
Because of years of buying Mideast oil there has been a
drastic change in the transfer of wealth from the United States to the oil
countries of the Mideast. Chevron/Texaco, Exxon/Mobile, and Amoco are the
major importers of mideastern oil. Sunoco, Conoco, Sinclair, Phillips,
Murphy Oil and Flying J just to name a few, do not import oil.
There is a major push going on to ask each and every
Congressman (Senators and Reps.) to lift the ban on off-shore drilling and
also allow drilling anywhere there is oil in the United States. I read
where there is enough oil here at home to last us indefinitely. (if the
government will let us drill for it) And while we’re at it, ask why we
sell our own oil to Japan, or anyone else for that matter.
The “squeaky “ wheel gets the grease and it is high
time we all start getting “squeaky”!!!

MORE ABOUT PEACOCK MOVIE!
Ankeny Actor Makes Final Cut
Richard Latch has made the final cut. His scene as a bank
guard will be part of the movie "Peacock," to be released around Jan.
1.
Latch joins another Ankeny thespian in the movie production - Susan
Grozier, who was Susan Sarandon's stand-in.
Latch will be on the silver screen with a one-line speaking part.
"I'm a bank guard," he said. "I sit by the bank vault and read a
newspaper. I'm listed on the production credits, too."
"Peacock" is a psychological thriller that was filmed in Odebolt,
Greenfield and other Iowa locations. Latch's role was filmed in
Odebolt.
"What a great place for a period shot," Latch said. "The bank was built
in 1915 and is a genuine piece of history."
His few moments on the screen took three days to shoot. The movie company
provided his transportation at Odebolt, put him up at a motel and fed
him well.
"It would be easy to get on an ego trip," he said. "Actors are treated
like royalty.
"There is transportation from the motel to the shoot. Very nice meals are
provided and there are also snacks available at the shoot.
"We had make-up applied at the community building across the street from
the bank. One day it was raining and the crew thought we needed
umbrellas to cross the street," Latch recalled. "Normally, you'd
simply grab an umbrella and cross the street. "Instead, a crew member
grabbed an umbrella and escorted me across the street."
Latch was paid actor's scale for the three-day assignment - $850 a cay.
"Actors sit around a lot, waiting for their scene to be shot. It's
interesting watching what goes on behind the cameras. For instance,
all the bank windows are covered and the lighting is artificial to
create just the right time of day," he said.

Approximately 4,000 people were on hand at 6:30 Tuesday night,
August 12, 1952, to watch the largest and most interesting parade in
the history of the Community Fair. Crowds lined the parade route from
Fifth street through the center of town and part of the way back to
the assembly area near East park.
This year’s parade, considerably longer than in former years,
consisted of 71 major entries in addition to dozens of children’s
entries and the local Saddle club, which entered as a group. Many
organizations and business houses entered large decorative floats,
along with numerous commercial displays.
The parade was led by a large group of residents of Odebolt who
have lived here for 75 years or more, in observance of the town’s 75th
anniversary. The old-time residents rode at the front of the show in
open convertibles and received a nice hand from the thousands along
the parade route.
Those in the 75-year group were Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. W. K.
Shaw, Mrs. Charles Kistler, Mrs. Frank Searight. L. L. Goreham, E. E.
Goreham, A. S. Teaquist, John Gonnerman, Henry Buehler and Will Raasch.
Henry Frey was also qualified as a 75-year resident but other plans
prevented his taking part in the parade.
