The Mayor Sez…
I dedicate this week’s column to all of our City employees and first
responders (fire, police, and ambulance). Some take you for granted, but I
can assure you this Mayor and City Council is grateful for your service to
Odebolt.
The present administration has enjoyed working with all of the above
and look forward to doing the same for the coming year. We salute!
Happy New Year to all and see you next year!

15,000 Pounds of Soy Protein bound for Zimbabwe, Africa
(Pictured in The
Chronicle are United Soybean Board Director Curt Raasch of Odebolt,
Gregg Nelson from Cargill, and Odebolt Rotarian Mick Menage, inside of the
20 foot shipping container in which the bags of TSP were packed. The
bags will arrive in Zimbabwe in approximately 6 weeks.)
More than 15,000 pounds of
textured soy protein (TSP) is leaving Cedar Rapids this month and is bound
for Zimbabwe in Southern Africa, where it will provide more than 200,000
servings of soy protein for orphans and special soy restaurants for the
hungry. Cargill Food & Pharma Specialties-North America is donating the
20-foot shipping container of TSP while Rotary Clubs in Odebolt and
Rockwell City, Iowa as well as their Rotary District and Rotary
International raised more than $6,000 for the transportation costs. The
opportunity to share the protein-rich soy with the needy in Zimbabwe
stemmed from the Iowa Soybean Board’s support of the World Initiative for
Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program that works with organizations in
Zimbabwe.
United Soybean Board Director from Iowa Curt Raasch and
his Rotary Club colleagues helped orchestrate the Rotary involvement after
learning about WISHH’s work with “Humana People to People” in Zimbabwe.
Humana People to People is working to feed children and adults in Zimbabwe
where 24.6 percent of the country’s 12.6 million people are HIV infected.
“Given soy’s nutritional benefits, including its value
to those fighting HIV/AIDS, this donation was a prime opportunity to make
a difference in people’s lives,” Raasch said. “We believe in soy, and we
believe in helping. Thanks to Cargill Food & Pharma Specialties and
Rotary, WISHH and Humana can put this soy protein to good use.”
Humana runs community feeding centers, supports school
feeding and has even established facilities known as “soy restaurants.”
The international assistance organization has long recognized the
nutritional benefits of soy protein to people with HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition
and HIV/AIDS often operate in tandem, with poor nutrition increasing the
risk of disease progression, and the disease intensifying malnutrition.
Numerous research findings show protein requirements of HIV/AIDS-infected
people can jump 50-100 percent higher than for uninfected people. Soy
protein is ideally suited to help meet their nutritional requirements for
protein, calories and more.
WISHH is working with Cargill Food & Pharma
Specialties-NA to manage the export shipping logistics. In addition, WISHH
will provide follow-up technical support in Zimbabwe to help get the most
out of the donation. “As a part of Cargill’s mission to be the global
leader in nourishing people, Cargill Food & Pharma Specialties is
enthusiastic about the opportunity to help the people of Zimbabwe, and in
particular to collaborate with so many different organizations in making
good things happen in the world,” R. Creager Simpson, president of Cargill
Food & Pharma Specialties-NA. “The gift of textured soy protein is part of
an ongoing commitment Cargill has with WISHH, including more than $150,000
in cash donations since 2003. Cargill will continue to help nourish people
around the world, as well as work with such committed partners as Rotary
International, WISHH, and the Iowa Soybean Board,” Simpson added.
The Iowa Soybean Board was one of the founding soybean
grower organizations to launch the WISHH Program in 2000. WISHH was
designed to find new opportunities for U.S. soy in programs that help feed
the hungry as well as stimulate economies for long-term sustainable
development. Two years ago, the U.S. government announced its first
purchase of a high-protein soy product for an international program. In
the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2004, the federal government has
purchased or made commitments to use more than $2 million of high-protein
soy products.
Global statistics show that 24,000 people die of hunger
each day; 18,000 of them will be children. “It is sobering to think that
the daily loss of children is 50 times greater than the total number of
kids in our home community’s school district,” said Raasch. “Soybean
growers can be pleased that their contributions are increasing through new
high-protein soy products, like textured soy protein. These high-protein
products have great nutritional value, and are being well received in a
wide range of countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and more.”

The Mayor Sez…
In mentioning all of our City treasures a few weeks ago I failed
to mention the Odebolt Website. Our web master is Barb Girvan Horak and
what a fantastic job she does along with assistance from her sister,
Bonnie. If you have not seen the site punch in www.odebolt.net. You will
be amazed. Many of us use the site daily for many things such as: weather,
current events, and etc. There is a wealth of information pertaining to
Odebolt. I just received a letter from an Odebolt Alumni concerning this
column. I am sure he read it on our web page. Great!

very Merry Christmas

The Mayor Sez…
Seldom does a mayor get to have more fun
then I did this morning. I was invited by Mrs. Buehler to talk to the 3rd
grade that she and Mrs. Wilken share in teaching. They had just completed
studying about government so they were well prepared to ask some very good
questions. They were very attentive, quite courteous, and extremely
interested in city government and who does what! My biggest surprise was
that I was talking to 38 kids. Go, OA!
My recent articles on what our city has
accomplished in the past number of years has probably brought more comments
(all favorable) than any other that I have written, however, we cannot rest
on our laurels. We have a serious problem with some old buildings downtown
and we need to address the situation now! Obviously the city can’t spend
tax dollars to raze private property. It sure looks to me like we need to
have some very generous contributions to help alleviate the situation and a
lead organization to take the bull by the horn! I might add that at this
time there are no grants available. We must do it on our own! The amount
needed could exceed $25,000.00.

This week’s column is a continuation of last week’s
column in mentioning all that has happened in our city in the past number of
years. We are proud of our new library
addition, our new fire
station, and our new fire truck that has the latest state of the art
equipment. We have a new water
tower and along with it a new pump house with the latest electronic
equipment to run it (along with Bill T’s expertise in keeping everything
cruising). We have a new co-precipitation process to help make our
water softer and safer to drink (radium removed).
Tell me we’re dying and I’ll tell you that you
are wrong. A City that does all of the things that I have mentioned the past
two weeks is a strong, viable community that believes in itself and its
future!

If you were out and about in the nasty winds we had this past week and drove west on 175 going by the Pioneer Seed building, you probably saw that
the stacked metal siding and roofing for the new addition had been blown all over the place. One tree also crashed to the ground along with lots of branches all over town
On another note, the Odebolt Public Library will be closed on 24th and 25th of December and also on the 31st this year and the 1st of January next year.

The Mayor Sez…Something is bothering me……I
hear too often, “The town is going down”, or “The town is blowing
away”, or “The town will be another Boyer”, and on and on.
Let’s go back a ways and review a few things!
We have a lot of things to be proud of, such as: a new community center, a memorial walk park, an RV park, a
creek beautification along with the park, a spectacular Veterans’ memorial, an
enlarged museum that has been
moved downtown, a 1 cent local option tax for our school, and updated
swimming pool, brand new and remodeled business facilities, and all of the
above has been done in just the past few years. To you “gloom and doom”
people—wake up and join us in keeping Odebolt a good place to live and
raise a family (or retire and live out a good life). Most everyone, town
and country alike, have contributed to the above projects. It is not too
late for the folks that haven’t done anything to contribute their time
and money. Generosity and positive thinking will keep us viable for many
years to come.

Replies to "Black Squirrels in Odebolt"
I received a couple replies to my notes about
black squirrels last week. One was from R.J. Rex who said that his
earliest recollection of black squirrels was down by Harry Carlson's
around the late 50's and 60's. He thinks they may have been in Odebolt
before then but not in great numbers, since they seem to get run over far
more than the reds for some reason.
I also had a response from Marlene (Lundell) West
who said the following was what she remembered being told by her
husband Russ West's family through the years,
She said, "I just read your article about
the black squirrels in Odebolt. Many years ago Russ's dad, Ralph
West and another man brought several pairs to Odebolt. They checked
with a conservation officer and it was approved to bring a new species in
to the town. Somewhere along the line some kids shot one or two but
some survived long enough to reproduce. I think these came from MO
(not sure). Russ left this morning on a week and a half trip but I
will ask him about it."
Marlene continued, "I remember Shirley Sykes
said she had seen some up around her home on the highway. When I
stayed with Ralph shortly before he died in 1994, we would take drives
around town and the countryside. He always liked to drive around the
boulevard and the western part of Odebolt to see if we could see any of
the black ones. Several times we did and it made him very happy to
see they were still around."
