The Mayor Sez…
Someone from Sioux City wrote, “The only global warming around here is a bunch of political hot air.” Fortunately it will all be over next week…..I think!!
Here is an interesting item. What City bills itself as “857 friendly people and one old grump”? (Readlyn, Iowa) That slogan could fit a lot of towns, don’t you think?
To all my readers, may you enjoy a healthy and wealthy New Year and thank you for your nice comments and input this past year. Have a Happy, Happy!!
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor
P.S.
A reminder that the after-prom committee will have a can pick up from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6th. Just put them on the curb or you may drop them at Faith Lutheran Church (by the back door).

The Mayor Sez…
I think there is a song that goes, ” It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”. Our homes have been decorated and we even have new Christmas decorations downtown. It would be very difficult to give a prize for the best decorated house as there are so many.
Christmas parties are in full swing. Drive carefully and use the DD system when applicable. I have been informed that the Sac Co. Sheriffs’ Dept. and Iowa Highway Patrol are out in full force, county roads included. Enough said!
On behalf of our Odebolt City Administration and Employees I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas.

The Mayor Sez…

I would like to thank Mrs. Wilken’s 4th graders for remembering us veterans. Fourth graders, your letter was very meaningful to us and your thoughtfulness will be remembered.
As the snow season is upon us please remember to keep your vehicles off of the streets during and after a snow storm. It is not the City’s wish to have your vehicle towed.
Is anybody getting tired of all the political ads (S.O.S.) on TV? It seems like every 5 minutes candidates from both parties are telling us how wonderful things will be if he, or she, is elected president. All I can say is thank goodness I have a ‘mute’ button on my TV remote control. Better yet is getting a good book and leave the ‘boob tube’ turned off.
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor

Odebolt Snow Ordinance--185.03 REMOVAL OF SNOW, ICE AND ACCUMULATIONS:

If a property owner does not remove snow, ice or accumulations within twenty-four hours, the City may do so and assess the costs against the property owner for collection in the same manner as a property tax.

The Mayor Sez…
It appears as though I got myself into trouble with a “neighbor to the North”. John Einspahr from Minnesota (former Odeboltian) called to inform me that their license plates cost more than $80.00. John, the only thing I can say is that I distinctly remember Gov. Ventura making a statement that he got legislation passed that no one shall pay more than 80-90 dollars for a license fee in Minnesota. John, obviously from your phone call on the matter, things have changed. I do appreciate your input and interest in my column. Note: Jim Barkley informed me that license plates are $78 in Illinois. Thanks, Jim.
Santa Claus came to town last Sat. and his visit was a huge success. Someone said that it has been 25 years since he rode on our fire truck into town. I’m betting he will be back next year. A big thanks for the donations by the various local organizations, special thanks to Keith and Lance for making it all possible, and thanks to the groups and people that donated their time, money, and help. We salute!
“Remember Pearl Harbor” on Dec. 7th; difficult to believe that it has been 66 years ago and that some of us remember that day.

     R. J. Rex, Mayor

WHY SHOP LOCALLY?
Because local merchants can provide things you can't get in the "big cities."

- Have they ever bought ads in your yearbooks, or ticket for your school activities?
- Have they ever opened after hours when you were in desperate need of something to sell?
- Have they ever bought tickets for your church suppers or contributed to worthwhile community projects?
- Have they ever put your posters up in their windows?
- Have they always been handy and willing to service their merchandise when you needed it?
- Have they cheerfully and quickly exchanged merchandise or let you return merchandise for a cash refund?

Your local small merchant provides these extras because he or she is your friend and neighbor and you see them every day in your community.  So SHOP LOCALLY as much as you can!

2007-2008 Winter Sports Special  - This issue of The Chronicle features photos of the county basketball and wrestling teams, as well as a page of winter sports schedules.  The pull-out is sponsored by many local businesses.  Featured are the Odebolt-Arthur Trojans and Trojanettes, the East Sac County Raider, and the Schaller-Crestland Wildcats.

A Sac County Barn Quilt Book featuring photographs, stories and related information about the barns has been published, just in time for Christmas.  The 64-page full color book was written by Amy Peyton as part of her project for the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student program and her 4H leadership project.  The book will be available in Sac County banks and gift shops during the month of December for $16.  There are large colored photographs of 55 barns as well as historical information about the farms, barns and quilt patterns.  Many of the barn owners also shared stories and anecdotes about the barns.  A map of the Sac County barn quilts is included.  Profits from sales of the book will go into a maintenance account for repainting or repairs of the barn quilts, replacing signage and reprinting maps and brochures.  The book can also be ordered on-line from the barn quilt web site www.barnquilts.com
