Reese and Rose Johnson of Odebolt received the State Windbreak
Award at the Conservation Districts of Iowa Annual Conference held
in Ames on Nov. 20. The Izaak Walton League of America sponsors a
windbreak award program every year in which each of the 100 Soil and
Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) in the state may submit
nominations. Farmstead windbreaks are one of the award categories.
This year the Sac County SWCD selected and submitted the farmstead
windbreak of Reese and Rose Johnson.
The Johnsons live in Wheeler Township. Their original three row
windbreak was planted more than 30 years ago north of the house. It
consists of two rows of Norway spruce and one row of honeysuckle.
Twenty years ago, four rows were added to the west and angled south.
This was done to protect the remainder of the farmstead and the cattle
lots. In 2003, a five-row windbreak was added to the north and west
windward (outside) portion of the existing windbreaks.
“There were more than 20 nominations in Sac County alone,” said Sac
County SWCD chairman, Jim Frederick. “The Johnsons being the state
winner is a huge honor. They are to be commended for all the hard work
they have gone to in establishing and maintaining the windbreak, for
providing habitat for wildlife and for protecting their livestock and
farmstead from the harsh winds while conserving natural
resources on their farm.”

A Look at a Christmas Past
GAMBLE'S TOYLAND
Does anyone remember, as a kid, looking at the Gamble's window in
Odebolt around Christmas and wishing and hoping? From the looks of the
toys, prices, and items on the other pages of the ad, it must have
been 1947. Note that the ad offers a "Lay-By Plan" - no one
got in credit card debt back then! At that time the store was in
the Cut Rate building on the northwest corner of Main and Third

I would like to thank everyone that participated in
helping make Santa and Mrs. Claus’ visit to Odebolt a memorable one. At
the risk of forgetting someone we thank Jim’s TV, Carmen Witzhe’s 4-H

Salute! Bill tells me that he has some new ideas for next year. I think
the parents and grand parents had as much fun as the kids.
Next week the holiday season will begin, so drive

THE PRINCESS THEATER
When The Princess Theater opened ninety-five years ago on Saturday,
December 13, 1913, it became the second movie theater in Odebolt. The
first was The Cozy, right next door. The owners of the two theaters
became partners in The Princess a few years later, and The Cozy was
closed.
Our grandfather’s brother, Axel Carlson, came to this country from
his native Sweden in 1904, and taught himself to read English by going
to the silent movies and watching the subtitles. A pianist watched the
screen and played music appropriate to the movie scene.
The Princess was also used to stage high school plays up to the
early 1930’s. When the high school building was completed, plays were
held on the stage and audiences were seated in the gymnasium. Today
that gymnasium is the school’s lunchroom.
When I was about three I went to a movie at The Princess with my
family. One scene in the movie depicted stone-columned buildings that
came crashing down, probably from an earthquake. I thought it was
scary, especially the noise, and I cowered under the seat. I remember
watching “A Christmas Carol” one Saturday afternoon in December a few
years later, and being frightened of Marley’s ghost. In those days the
movie was preceded by a newsreel showing recent news events, narrated
by Ed Herlihy and accompanied by dramatic orchestral music. There was
always a cartoon before the main feature. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck,
Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, and Bugs Bunny were some of my
favorites.

From Barb Horak ...
I vividly remember excitedly waiting for Santa to
arrive in front of the Princess when I was a child. He would
come down the street perched high above us on a fire truck with sirens
wailing. We all got bags of candy and nuts if I remember right.
Seems to me we could then watch a Christmas movie in the theater.
It is a fond memory.
Who were some of those Santas from the 1950s?
From John Ellis
Just like in churches of today, moviegoers of the
Princess usually sat in the same seats each time. This being the case
Elwood Olson would sit in his front row seat during any showing of a
western movie acting out the part of the cowboy star whether he was
riding a horse, fighting or shooting a gun. He got very demonstrative
at times; however, people just tolerated his actions.
Delmar Vernia was manager of the Princess for a number of
years. He did everything from selling tickets, popping corn, all the
janitorial work to straightening
out of us kids out when we got out of line. Naturally he would soon be
known as "Prince" Vernia.
I remember the Movietone News, especially in the fall
when they would show clips of college football games played maybe a
week before or so. Most were of eastern teams such as Yale or Harvard.
Comedy shorts were shown prior to the feature film such as Wheeler &
Woosley (who were really funny I thought)
If you took in a Sunday Matinee, coming out of the
theatre afterward was an adventure in itself especially on bright
sunny day, You had to adjust your eyes to the brightness by squinting
and rubbing until everything got back to normal.
From R.J. Rex
The article on the Princess theatre brought back a
lot of memories. Somewhere around the ages of 12, 13, and 14 we went
to the movies at the Princess, usually on Friday night. I think the
price for a ticket was 10 cents and a nickel for popcorn. By
pre-arrangement if a girlfriend wanted to sit by you (or visa-versa)
no matter what, everyone had to buy their own ticket. Later on somehow
or other that arrangement changed and if you wanted a date, you had to
pay for your girlfriend's ticket too. ( I can't remember who bought
the popcorn!)

about businesses; personal facts about the owners give insight into
the passion behind each operation. Some have even ventured an answer
to that oft-asked question “what is your favorite plant”? Additional
abbreviated listings for 147 locations are also included. For

The
Mayor Sez…
We are deeply saddened by the unbelievable bloodshed,
death, and chaos that happened in India a couple weeks ago. It makes us
realize that no one is really immune to these terrorist attacks.
Fortunately we are blessed with the peaceful life of living in rural
America and of the relative safety that we enjoy. That is not to say that
it couldn’t happen nearby.
Some tips for the holidays: turn off your inside
Christmas lights when out of the house, keep your vehicles locked, keep
your houses locked, and if you are going to be out of town let the police
dept. know the dates that you will be gone. The motto of the boy scout is
“Be Prepared”. I think that motto covers a lot of bases; don’t you think??

Note to parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, Santa
and Mrs. Claus will be in Odebolt at the Odebolt Community Center this
Sat., Dec. 6th, from 1 P.M. until 3 P.M. We certainly hope you will bring
yours kids since there will be treats for everyone (must not forget to
mention sitting on Santa’s lap to tell him what you want for Christmas).
With winter arriving, may I remind everyone not to park
on the streets during and after a condition of snow, sleet, or ice. Each
year we have to tow a few vehicles that violate our “snow ordinance” and,
trust me, it is not pleasant for all concerned. The City needs to be able
to clear and sand the streets. Another reminder, the City does not look

O-A Foundation announces mini-grant awards to
two projects:
A Leveled Book Library submitted by Kara Neville, 1st
grade teacher. This is a collection of books of varying degrees
of difficulty throughout numerous titles, allowing the teacher to
teach effective reading strategies to small groups of children at
an appropriate level for their success.
Elmo TT-02S Visual Presenter submitted by
Traci Allen, Technology Coordinator, and Irene Thayer, 2nd grade
teacher. The Elmo is a revolutionary document camera that allows
the instructor to display a variety of objects onto the wall or
screen for the entire class to view. It can be hooked up to an
LCD projector, computer or television.
