The Mayor Sez...
From time to time I hear the expression "Nobody's perfect."  If you do expect a perfect teacher, a perfect student, a perfect mayor, a perfect council person or a perfect whatever - forget it!  Whoever expects perfection better be a perfectionist themselves.  (I don't think there are too many of those, if any.)
Recently I saw an interesting "one liner".  It goes like this; "lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself."
Last but not least Jim Barkley writes, "Mayor, if you have as much snow on the ground as you say you have, you had better get someone to build a "Noah's ark" because you are going to need it!"

The Mayor Sez...

I saw something that I thought should be read in my column.

Statement of Values

  • We value the responsibility placed upon each of us to contribute to our community and society.

  • We value conscience that balances self interest with an obligation to the common good and future generations.

  • We value progress that strengthens rural communities, small businesses and family farms.

  • We value genuine opportunity to earn a living, raise a family and prosper in a rural place.

  • We value citizen involvement and action to shape the future.

  • We value fairness that allows all who contribute to the nation's prosperity to share it.

  • We value stewardship of the national environment on which current and future generations rely.

It pretty much says it all!

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 13, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. Burial was in the Odebolt Cemetery. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt was in charge of the arrangements.
Friends wishing to send condolences on-line may do so via the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home website: www.farberotteman.com
Marjorie was born July 15, 1915 in Odebolt, the daughter of Louie H. and Lettie R. (Waugh) Rabe. She lived in the Odebolt area her entire life. She attended country school and graduated from Odebolt High School. Marjorie’s father passed away when she was a sophomore in high school, which was a difficult time for her as the oldest child in her family. Her mother would be very important to Marjorie for her entire life.
On January 27, 1934, Marjorie was united in marriage to Robert W. Buehler in South Dakota. To this union three children were born: Jeanine, Duane and Roger.
Marjorie was a true matriarch of the Buehler Family. She enjoyed working with her husband on their farm, while still making a warm and comfortable home for her family as the children were growing up. Marge was a wonderful cook and baker, and an excellent seamstress, and she liked putting her skills to work in her home. She especially liked to make beautiful, intricately constructed doll garments for her grandchildren. Marge belonged to a Mother and Kids group, and enjoyed refinishing woodwork. She was the leader of the 4-H Richland Robins for many years. Marge and Robert enjoyed socializing with their farm neighbors. She and Robert also appreciated the opportunities they had to travel, and had many wonderful memories of trips with the Dennis Gustafson group, and of a special trip to Hawaii in the winter of 1975.
Marjorie was a lifetime member of the Odebolt United Methodist Church, where she also belonged to the U. M. W. She was active in all activities of the church, willing to help wherever she could.
Marge was a loving wife and devoted mother who delighted in her family and treasured every moment she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jeanine and husband William Davidson of Hudson, Iowa; her two sons: Duane and wife Donna Buehler, and Roger and wife Ellen Buehler, all of Odebolt; eight grandchildren: Pam Davidson, Judd Davidson, Karen and husband Brad Pippett, Jeff and wife Beth Buehler, Brian Buehler, Bradley, Abby and Barry Buehler ; 3 great-grandchildren: Noah and Sidney Buehler, and Tera Pippett; her sister Betty Cochrane of Naches, WA; her sisters-in-law, Mae Christian of Lake View and Mabel Buehler of Elmhurst, IL; her brother-in-law, Earl Buehler of Odebolt; and many extended family members and friends.
Preceding Marjorie in death were her parents, her husband Robert on August 27, 1992; one brother, Melvin Rabe; and one sister, Vera McDonough.

The Mayor Sez…

Good news and bad news - the bad news first.  Snow, snow, and more snow.  If the snow keeps coming, we may run out of places to haul it.  The City is asking for your patience and tolerance under these very difficult conditions.  (And for the most part, everyone has been great!)  Hint - don't be in a hurry to shovel out your drive-way as the plows will usually go by more than once, depending on the duration of the storm.  If you have to clean your driveway in order to get out, so be it!
The good news is - 6 weeks from now, give or take a few days, it will be spring.
On a whole, everyone has been good about abiding by our snow ordinances (parking, sidewalks, and snowmobiles).
In closing, has anyone noticed the yard signs at Steve & Deb Loger's?  Betcha nobody steals those yard signs - HOOAH!

The Mayor Sez...

Nothing pleases me more than to see our kids get recognition; be it connected with academics, music, dance, athletics, or whatever. OA is well known and recognized for all of the above.
As most of us know, we are in a declining enrollment situation, however, with good administrative leadership we can endure. As most everyone knows there are forces working against the very foundation that our school was founded upon.  Bigger isn’t necessarily better!  It seems as though the school board is divided and something is going to have to give!  I urge each and every one of you to voice your opinions and suggestions, as the board surely will have an attentive ear. If they don’t you can register your dissatisfaction at the polls this fall.
Harmony is imperative! It seem to me that five board members can find a solution to keep our school (OA) intact for some years to come. We can and may have to petition for a referendum vote; I hope it doesn’t come to that action. Our trust is in our elected officials. For the good of the kids and the school district don’t sell us out! I don’t want to hear it will be in the best interest of our kids, that’s malarkey! We are the envy of every school district in the area! Why do you think they want us to join them???
