HOW THE TROJANS GOT THEIR NAME
The Chronicle, Vol. 116, No. 8
February 22, 2007
The Mayor Sez ...
The publication 'Progressive Farmer' has named Sac
County Iowa the 7th best rural county in the nation to live in. Maybe we
should be 1st, however 7th best against everyone else isn't too bad. Within
the county there are 9 cities, several school districts and all kinds of
recreational facilities - a lake, rivers & streams, trails, golf courses,
camping facilities & more.
Public Safety is excellent throughout the county and we
have 0 tolerance for illegal drug activity. (If you do drugs, get out of Sac
County.)
We are quite diversified in area business and industry,
however, most everything revolves around agriculture and livestock production.
There are usually jobs available for many different kinds of classifications.
A good time to visit Odebolt is during Creek Days in
June of each year. You will get a first hand glimpse of the friendliness of a
community displaying harmony and working together. Our Odebolt Development
Committee and their volunteers go all out to make your weekend an enjoyable
one.
Kudos to Shirley Phillips, our Sac County Economic
Development and Tourism Director for playing a part in the 'Progressive
Farmer' award.

91 Years Ago - Z.W. Sparks,one of Odebolt's earliest settlers dies.
THE ODEBOLT NEWS, VOL. II, No. 50,
February 24, 1916
Z. W. Sparks, one
of Odebolt's earliest settlers, passed away at his home in Los Angeles,
California on Monday morning of this week. A telegram was received in
this city the same day announcing that the remains would be brought to
Odebolt for burial on Saturday afternoon if nothing happens to interfere
with the schedule mapped out.
Mr. Sparks was a Southern born gentleman who first
emigrated to the west and later to Wheaton, Ill. In 1871 Mr. Wheeler was
surveying and laying the foundation for his large ranch south and west
of this city and in that year Mr. Sparks came here and became a part of
the organization which was doing this work. Meanwhile he had arranged
for the purchase of a section of land on the east line of this city and
was having a home built on it. To this home he was able to remove in
1872.
For many years he remained on this land, finally
removing to this city and residing in the building now owned by George
Mattes on Lincoln Avenue.
Between four and five years ago he removed to
California with his daughters and has resided there since. He also
leaves one daughter, residing in this state, Mrs. Cook of Sioux City.
Mrs. Sparks had preceded him to the grave, having died
some years ago.
Few men had settled in this section when Mr. Sparks
came to make the Iowa prairie his future home. A. L. Chandler and others
came in 1872 and the succeeding years, altho [sic] Crawford County had
some settlers near the Sac County line as early as 1867 and 1868.

The Mayor Sez . . .
From time to time I get suggestions via letters,
E-mail, phone calls or in person from former Odeboltians on how they remember
Odebolt when they were kids growing up here in the 'bolt. They have many
suggestions on how to make Odebolt "the way it was", and most of the
suggestions really make sense in every way except one - money!
It takes money to do the things you folks want done,
not to mention the hours of volunteer work that is usually involved! If there
is a person or persons with say $50,000 for a start, I promise you, we will
get the ball rolling on some of your suggested City projects, especially the
downtown. I realize that most haven't got that kind of money, however, some do
and to that person or persons I am directing my appeal for financial help. It
may be possible to get a grant for downtown beautification with matching
funds,
So $50,000 pledged could mean another $50,000 from a grant. Needless to say
$100,000 could really give us a much needed start.
An extremely generous bequest has been given to the
Library and Fire Department and it could happen for our downtown area too.
Keep the suggestions coming folks, as making Odebolt
"the way it was" could really happen.

The O-A boys basketball team won the prestigious Maple
Valley BB Conference Tournament a week or so ago. I congratulate the team, the
coaches, the cheerleaders, the student body and the fans, however, there was
more to winning the tournament than meets the eye. There was wild enthusiasm
and school spirit, but most importantly, there was O-A pride and identity by
everyone! If we could look into the crystal ball down the road a few years, I
ask you, will there still be all of the above? I guess I can answer my own
question by saying "No, there won't be any of the above concerning O-A pride
because we will cease to exist as we know O-A today." OHS and later O-A have
been a City treasure for over 125 years.

Odebolt Octogenarians Track Down
Origin of the "Trojans"
It was my classmate, Wayne
Carlson's query about when the name of "Trjoan" was adopted that prompted
my "hunt". My wife, Wannie, & I talked it over. I could vaguely remember
sitting in the bleacher seats in the gym to discuss and vote on a name for
the school teams. The question was when this was done. It had to be either
when we were seniors or when we were juniors.
I called P Dale Gronemeyer, left a message on his
answering machine, and called Jack Stickrod. We had a short visit and when
I hung up , Dale called back to say that he could not add any light.
I then called John Ekstrom and Madeline McTasney. None
could pin it down. So I called Florence Fry Bye nee McFarland because she
was class of '39. She thanked me for thinking that she might know (haha).
Jack Stickrod called back the next day to tell me to
try Harvey Keller because "he keeps track of everything". I had a good
visit with Harvey and we decided it was when he was a junior and Wannie
and I were seniors. That would have been in the fall of 1939.
I had voted for a different name, because I did not
like TROJANS for a name of the school. I do not remember the name that I
favored, however.
- Chuck Hanson
(Thanks Chuck! Chuck is also digital photographer for odebolt.net!)
An Addition from Chuck!
(Saturday, Feb. 10) - This morning over coffee and conversation with nephew
Don Cowlham, class of '58, we were discussing the Trojan origin. He
suggested looking in the Quasquicentennial book, which I did. On page 151
there is a story that tells of Coach Orville Kahler asking Sophomore
Maurice Slechta, Senior Duane McElravy, and Junior, John Ellis to come up
with a school nickname. Ellis had an uncle who was a fan of UCLA and John
offered the name TROJANS. The name was agreed upon by the three boys
according to this article. This then confirms the timeline for the
adoption of the name TROJANS. Duane McElravy was a member of the class of
1940 and Ellis '41.
More, from Wayne Carlson
(Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10) "Trojans are the
mascot of USC not UCLA and Duane McElravy was the class of 41. Great
reporting Charles. This has been fun."
And Even More, from John Ellis!
(Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10) As I log on to the Odebolt web page
quite often, I came across Chuck Hansen's article relative to the tracking
down the origin of the "Trojans". He's correct in his follow-up addition
in that Coach Kahler selected a sophomore (Maurice Schlecta '43) a senior
(Duane McElravey '41) and a junior (John Ellis '42) from the basketball
team to come up with a school nickname. This was during the 1940-1941
season. I can even remember the room where the three of us met.
As stated in the article, I suggested "Trojans", which
was my Uncle's favorite football team, the USC Trojans. We all three
agreed to the name without any hesitation.
Looks as if the current Trojans are doing quite well
this year. Good for them. Should they get to the district finals, here's
hoping they can get by #1 Alta. GO TROJANS!!!!!

The Mayor Sez...
I am happy to report that our first City Council
meeting of 2007 had a very positive tone. Our City is solvent and we don't
plan on spending more than what our budget allows for. The local option penny
tax that passed last year has certainly helped us to keep taxes under control
and to give financial help to some of our City entities.
We removed 3 old downtown buildings last year and I am
sure the removal of more unsightly old buildings will happen, sooner if not
later.
We will not let up on keeping our City neat and
presentable even though some property owners have different opinions of what
'neat and presentable' means.

Help Support Iowa’s Firefighters - The Volunteer Fire
Fighter Preparedness Fund Check-Off on Iowa’s Income Tax Return is now
combined with the Keep Iowa Beautiful Fund. All donations to this check-off
will be split evenly between the two funds. All money in the Volunteer Fire
Fighter Preparedness fund will go towards the training of volunteer fire
fighters in Iowa. Many of Iowa’s volunteer fire departments face financial
hardships when it comes to ensuring that their fire fighters are adequately
trained. Your donation will help offset this burden and will also qualify as a
charitable contribution on next year’s tax return.
