The Mayor Sez ...
Just a reminder - the Odebolt Firemen's Fish Fry is coming
up March 14th at 6:00 p.m. They will be serving delicious fish and
chicken. And you're sure to have a good time. This no smoking thing the legislature is trying to pass
is getting crazy. You won't be able to smoke anywhere except in
our casinos. I guess they know which side the bread is buttered
on. More on that as it develops. If the ground hog is right, winter will be over in a
few weeks. Halleluiah! From the 'bolt

and miles of trees within the path of the tornado were uprooted or
literally flattened. Daryl was gone for ten days on this assignment. The
American Red Cross is always looking for volunteers to assist when
disasters strike. For more information you may contact Daryl Cleveland

WINTER STORIES
Quote from an interview with
P. Dale Gronemeyer
(Remembering back to his boyhood) ...."We used to make
a big pile of snow in the winter, then crawl up the tank [the Odebolt
water tower], then jump off clear down into the pile of snow. You
could go up partway, you know, there’s different levels, then jump
into the snow until we got into trouble doing that. They put a stop to
that; they were afraid somebody would get hurt."
Quote from "Memories
of Country School Days"
by Dorothy Girvan
"In the winter we enjoyed
coasting on our sleds down the nearby hills. One of the boys, an only
child, was much admired, because he had a wonderful long "flier" on
which his favored girlfriends might ride. One of a family of three
boys was able to construct a small "bob" sled which he triumphantly
brought to school and he became the hero of the hour as it was even
more fun to ride on his sled and there was room for more to ride.
Those who had wet overalls and stockings were allowed to sit near the
stove or furnace when the school bell rang again, and they studied
there."

The Mayor Sez…
Attention smokers - If the Governor and the Iowa State
Legislature get their way, you won't even be able to go behind the barn to
puff on a fag, not to mention, the kids won't be able to smoke cornsilk out in
the cornfield for fear of polluting the air. Too bad!
Obviously Congress doesn't have anything to do but
worry about baseball players sticking needles in themselves. Anyway, baseball
isn't the national pastime any more, stock car racing has taken over. Stock
car drivers are too smart to play with needles….go Junior!
Other than a few dog complaints and some break-in
artists passing through, it has been fairly quiet in the 'bolt. I think
everyone is waiting for some warmer air to invade us.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
Just a note to let you know what a friendly and
hospitable town we think Odebolt is. Our party of ten was stranded there
yesterday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We spent those 6 hours at Cubby's
and were impressed at how friendly and hospitable the employees were. The
manager welcomed us in out of the snow and offered us free hot coffee, hot
chocolate or pop. We were very thankful for a warm friendly place where we
could spend those 6 hours.
Also a young man in your town opened his body shop to
fix my uncle and aunt's car which had been rear ended. They never could have
driven it back to Harlan without him working on it which was appreciated.
Last but not least was a farmer who lives 5 miles south
of Odebolt. He was at Cubby's and went home around noon. He called us back and
said, "Don't try going back to Harlan because the storm is too bad." He came
back to Cubby's around 3:30 and said if we were going to try to get back to
Harlan, he thought the storm had let up enough. He helped us get to his farm
and from there on we had a safe trip home.
It is heartwarming to know there are people who care
and Odebolt is one place to find them.

Odebolt's historic bank ...
I'm sure many of you have been wondering about the
fate of Odebolt's historic bank now that it has been sold.
According to an article on page 3 of the February 13,
2008 edition of the Ida County Courier, the
new owners, First State Bank of Ida Grove, plan to replace
windows, clean the brass fixtures and marble floors and generally
restore the bank back to its original look.
I, for one, am VERY pleased that they are preserving this
wonderful building. I wonder if anything has been done on placing it
on the National Register of Historic Places?
By the way, bank hours will be 9 to 3 M-Th and Fridays
from 9 to 6. ATM access is at Food Pride and Casey's

An "Odebolt" Poem

Click on the left image to
read a poem that was found through a search for Odebolt at "Google
Books", an ever-expanding archive of on-line reading. (www.books.google.com),
The poem was written by Eloise A. Skimings (1837-1921)
who lived in Goderich, Ontario, Canada and was known as "The Poetess
of Lake Huron". It is addressed to Mrs. Josiah Skinner.
Skimings was a newspaper columnist, music teacher and
composer, as well as an author. Her best known book of poetry was
Golden Leaves, in which "Odebolt" was found. Golden
Leaves was one of only two books penned by women to be exhibited
in the Library of the Women's Building at the Chicago World's Fair in
1893.
Josiah Skinner and his wife Anna E. Skinner appear in
the 1885 Iowa Census, and in the 1900 US Census living in Levey
Township near Odebolt. In 1900 they are age 70 and 55
respectively. Josiah was born in New York and Anna was born in
Canada, so there is the Canada connection.

Just for Laughs
Why I Love Iowa ....
It's winter in Iowa
And the gentle breezes blow,
70 miles per hour
at 52 below!
Oh, how I love Iowa
When the snow's up to your butt,
You take a breath of winter air
And your nose is frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
I guess I'll hang around,
I could never leave Iowa
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground.

The Odebolt Dairy
and Cheese Factory
Read a history about this Odebolt
business, submitted by Mel & Harold Lindner, sons of Mr. & Mrs.
August Lindner who ran it. This business preceded what was
known as the Langle Dairy.
Both Mel and Harold graduated from Odebolt High School; Mel
in 1949 and Harold in 1942. Harold carried on the family tradition
and went on to be a master cheese maker in Iowa and Wisconsin.
Thanks to the Lindner brothers for this "new" bit of
Odebolt history!
