The Mayor Sez…
I read the following the other day and thought it might be worth passing on.
“Who?? This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody would do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”
Fortunately, I don’t think the above people live in Odebolt, however, there is always the chance that they could move in.
Congrats to Tuesday Club on their donation to the Red Cross.
     From the Bolt!

Odebolt-Arthur Community School District
Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting
Thursday, January 20, 2005; 4:30 p.m.

The Citizens Advisory Committee, appointed by the Odebolt-Arthur School Board, met on the above date and time.
Superintendent Russ Freeman welcomed those present and explained the role of the committee and some basic rules and guidelines for the meeting.
Enrollment data was presented, both historical data and projected enrollments from the state and from the administration's estimation. Additional information passed out included tax levy percentages and unspent balances from previous years, and also projections of the budget guarantee.
Dani Trimble gave a presentation on the Annual Progress Report (APR) and the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). Data that has been collected and studied was shared with the group that shows the progress our students are making in the math, reading, and science programs.  Combined student achievements were compared for both the Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove School Districts.
Superintendent Freeman split the large group up into small groups and asked them to discuss any alternate plans that could be considered for the whole grade sharing proposal that both boards have indicated that they will pursue.
The two options that the O-A and BC-IG boards are looking at are 1) grades 10-12 at Ida Grove and grades six through nine at Odebolt; or 2) grades nine-12 at Ida Grove and grades six through eight at Odebolt.
The groups came up with several alternate plans:

  • K-5 in each district
    Grades 6-8 in Odebolt
    Grade 9 in Battle Creek
    Grades 10-12 in Ida Grove.

  • K-5 in each district
Divide the BC-IG and O-A districts in half and have grades 6-8 in both Battle Creek and Odebolt and grades 9-12 in Ida Grove.

  • K-5 in each district,
    Grades 6-8 in Ida Grove
    Grades 9-12 in Odebolt.

  • Stay as we are and share teachers.

  • Extend the time frame of the original plan of K-5 grade in each district, grades 6-8 in Odebolt and grades 9-12 in Ida Grove.

Next Freeman asked the groups to compile the pros and cons of each of the plans. These were turned in at the end of the meeting so they can be studied. The members of the committee were asked to sign up to serve on a facilities, transportation, and vocational sub-committees.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

The Mayor Sez…

I am pleased to report that a contribution was made by Don Ahrenholtz and the late Manie Ogden to be used for building repair of our downtown area. Don and Manie, maybe you have started something (and, Don, I do remember when every building has a thriving business and on Saturday night a parking space was hard to find. I even greased cars and changed oil on Saturday night at my Dad’s garage; probably your Dad’s car was one of them).
Trust me, we, the City, do have a downtown beautification project in mind, however, we are still in the planning stage and need all the help we can get. Thanks to Don and his Mother, the late Manie Ahrenholtz Ogden.
Note…..contributions may be made to me or City Hall, what ever is your choice. Checks should be made to the City of Odebolt-Building Fund. I might mention that one suggestion was to make a downtown “sitting park” once the buildings in question are razed and name the park after a generous donor with a commemorative memorial.

Nothing can be more rewarding than to have a part in feeding hungry children. Curt, Mick, and the Odebolt Rotary Club, we salute!
