The Mayor Sez…
I knew I shouldn’t have been bragging about our nice
weather a week ago, or so. Oh well, as of Jan. 16th we have six more weeks
until the first of March. If time flies by for you as fast as it does for me
I’ll be wondering where Feb. went.
Our elected State Representatives (Sen. Kettering, Rep.
Rod Roberts, and Rep. Gary Worthan) were present at our Jan. Sac Co. League of
Cities meeting and gave us a thorough enlightenment on important issues facing
our state legislature this year. They emphasized the need to hear from all of
us on any proposed legislation that we may be concerned about.
Please remember to move your vehicles off of the street
if it starts to snow. The City employees have been ordered, by the Council, to
tow the vehicles when they impede snow removal. Enough said! Also, get the
walks shoveled, too! We do not want to have do it for you and then send you a
bill.

To all of us who missed Santa Claus this last Christmas
I am happy to report that I have had a communication from the North Pole and
Santa Claus is coming to town this coming Christmas. If there are any
organizations that would like to assist when he does arrive, please let us
know. The City Council is planning on replacing or adding to, our downtown
Christmas decorations.
Newsflash! News was received last week that Wilmark
will not be building an ethanol plant in Odebolt. I am told that the main
reason was that there simply will not be enough corn available to keep the
plant in operation. Too bad!

Obituary: Dorothy Higby
Dorothy R. Higby peacefully slept away at the Fleur
Heights Care Center in Des Moines, IA on January 7, 2007 at age 88.
Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery with a celebration of her life to be
held at a later date.
Dorothy was born 22 September 1918 on the family farm
near Odebolt to Edgar R. and Drucilla (Freese) Reuber. She enjoyed
long-lasting memories of farm life and attending one-room school houses.
When her father became too ill to farm, the family
moved to Odebolt. Her father died when she was 14 and during high school
years she helped with family income by babysitting and serving as a hired
girl. She graduated in 1937.
Dorothy was confirmed in the Presbyterian Church and
later served as Sunday School Secretary.
The marriage of Dorothy and Everett Higby ended in
divorce. As a single mom with two daughters, she worked for Larson's
Grocery as clerk and dry goods buyer. She also worked part-time for the
Odebolt Chronicle.
She traveled to Des Moines for specialized spinal
surgery and after recovering moved to Des Moines for better job opportunities.
She worked for Dun and Bradstreet for nearly twenty-five years and was retired
when the Collection Department closed.
An accomplished seamstress, Dorothy made draperies,
linens, clothing, formals, wedding dresses, and historic costumes for family
and friends. She carried on the family tradition and love of quilting
using her keen eye for color, design, and fine hand-stitching.
She loved to garden and to her neighbors was known as
"the flower lady". Her kids and grandkids would always praise her dill
pickles. Dorothy loved the birds and squirrels she fed and the trees
surrounding her home. Most of all she loved her family and friends and
gave of herself generously to them and also to charities. Christmas with
family and family reunions were always favorite events.
Those who will love and cherish her forever are her two
daughters, Colleen Ewing of Forest City and Sandra (and Kyle) McGonigle of Des
Moines; two sisters Grace (and Warren) Long and Helen (and Jim) Schumburg all
of Rockford, IA; five grandchildren and spouses; 16 great-grandchildren; two

Claude Ewing; aunts and uncles; more dear cousins and family babies.

Photographer A. W. Dalhstrom
Started Odebolt Business in 1907
(Source: "Fifty Years of Progress"; The Odebolt
Chronicle, Vol. 51, Number 31 Thursday, August 25, 1938)
Lindquist Bros.
established one of the first photography studios in Odebolt. The site of
the studio was first occupied by a residence. [SW corner of Main and 3rd
Streets where the dental offices are in 2007].
Before 1882, a studio was erected by F.R. West.
West was succeeded by a Mr. Frey who, in turn, sold out to J. L.
Humphrey. A.W. Dahlstrom bought the business in 1907.
A. W. Dahlstrom made photographic records of
three generations of Odebolt people during the 46 years he operated a
photography studio. He came to Odebolt from Marathon, Iowa.
... Mr. Dahlstrom originally took pictures on glass
negatives; then came the use of film and modern developing methods. When
he began business here, Odebolt was served with gas for illuminating, and
it was difficult for him with those crude methods to develop and print his
pictures. Then came electricity and a general improvement in the work. Mr.
Dahlstrom retired in May of 1953.

The
Mayor Sez…
Recently some of Mrs. Wilken’s 4th graders wrote (in
the newspaper) what they would do to make our community a better place to live
in 2007. Very interesting………
By far and away the two most popular subjects were to
shorten bar hours so people wouldn’t get drunk and then drive home and the
second was to have more cops. To you fourth graders that wrote the above I am
going to try and enlighten you on those subjects.
All I can tell you about bar hours is that they are
regulated by the State of Iowa not the City of Odebolt. I might add there is a
saying that goes like this, “Friends don’t let friends drive when drinking”.
As for having more cops, qualified policemen want to work in larger cities
where they can earn more money. It is difficult to find a policeman that is
willing to work for what our City can afford to pay.
I have certainly enjoyed your comments and I hope I
have helped you understand the City’s position on bar hours and more
policemen.

The
Mayor Sez…
The new year 2007 is upon us and with it the new
challenges that face us.
One challenge could be the influx of workers that will
be working on the area ethanol plant, or plants. If the proposed second plant
near Odebolt becomes a reality, can we provide for their needs? I am told that
each plant could have up to 70 workers on the site each day. That means a
potential of 140 workers in our area at one time. Something to think about
isn’t it?
Something else to think about……next summer there will
be traffic interruption at times when Hwy. 175 gets a new surface. We have
been working on this challenge. If the two plants are under construction,
careful traffic re-routing will be necessary, at times.
And last, but not least, the weather, hasn’t it been
delightful? I hope I don’t regret bragging about our nice weather.
From the ‘bolt,
R. J. Rex, Mayor
