SALUTE TO CORN

This week's Chronicle includes a supplement, the 2008 Salute to Corn Magazine, and features an interview with John Scott of Odebolt, an Iowa Corn Growers Association board member. Scott is the vice chair of the research committee.
A new corn-based plastic will break down faster in the landfills than ordinary petroleum-based plastics. "We're finding new uses for corn all the time," said Scott. "It's unbelievable what's in a kernel. They've been mapping the genome of corn, trying to find out more about what it's capable of. There's a lot that we don't know yet, but every day we find new uses."
All of the advances with soil testing, global positioning, other technology and equipment have meant that farmers can spend lots of time studying charts and learning how to use new technology to farm smarter.

The Mayor Sez…
I  seldom repeat myself with anything from last week. However, the following is sooooooo important. It could save your life.
Your keyless entry device for your car, or truck, can be used in an emergency when you are near or in your vehicle. Example: if you slip and fall near your vehicle press the red button on your remote and the horn will honk continuously or if someone threatens you when your are in or near your vehicle press the red button. More than likely the perp will leave. Pass this on to your family members.
I hear that Tuesday Club is sponsoring a “Design the Tee Shirt” contest for Creek Days 2008. I am sure we will read the details later on the web page and in the Chronicle.

A celebration of the birthday of the Scottish bard, Robert Burns, began the evening of January 25, 1906 at the Odebolt opera hall.  The Scots had a program, a midnight supper, a dance, and a business meeting at 3 a.m.   The party finally broke up several hours later.  We're guessing they ran out of whisky and had to go home to milk the cows.   Click to read all about it

The Mayor Sez…
In St. Charles, Missouri, the city council is considering adoption of an ordinance that would ban swearing in bars and saloons. Good heavens!! There is no praying in school, no “In God We Trust” in government, and now no cussing in bars and saloons. What is this country coming to?? (Maybe ask the ACLU.)
Please note the following safety tip. For any reason that you may need assistance when in, or near, your car, simply press the red button on your car’s remote key and the horn will honk continuously. It could be about a health related item, or possibly, someone threatening you in some manner. Pass this on to your driving age kids.
The after-prom committee would like to thank you all for your can donations in Jan. The next can drive will be held on Sunday, Feb. 10th, just put your cans on the curb between 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Carstensen Re-elected as President of Iowa Cattlemen's Association--(photo) On January 7th 2008, the Iowa Cattlemen's Association (ICA), held elections for their Executive Board. The elections were prior to the 2008 ICA Annual Convention, held Tuesday & Wednesday, January 8-9, at the Gateway Hotel & Convention Center, 2100 Green Hills Drive, Ames, Iowa.
Current ICA President Kevin Carstensen was re-elected to a second one year term.
While serving his term as ICA President in 2007, Kevin and wife Terri continue to operate their feedlot in Odebolt, Iowa. For the past 30 years the Carstensens have operated a diversified family farm which includes cattle, row crops and hay. Kevin and Terri have raised three children and have been the sole proprietors of the operation since the retirement of Kevin's father in the mid-1980s.
Kevin has served at many levels of beef industry organizations. In Iowa; Kevin has served as Sac County Cattlemen's president multiple times, ICA Membership chairman, President's Council Founding Committee as well as ICA Political Action Committee chairman. Kevin is a past board member for the Iowa Cattlemen's Foundation. As a member of the ICA board of directors for 9 years, Kevin completed his second term (4 years) as NW Iowa Regional Vice-President. He was on the ICA Finance Committee 2005-06, Phase II fund raising for the ICA office building, Iowa Young Cattlemen's Tour participant and received the ICA membership Top Hand Award.
On the national level Kevin chairs the National Private Lands & Environmental Management committee. He has been a past chair of the national Environmental Stewardship Awards Program selection committee where he still serves as a feedlot representative, both in Iowa and nationally. Recently Kevin has been involved with reviewing the rules of the "clean air act and dust ruling"; an issue which Senator Grassley has been actively promoting public awareness of. Kevin has acted as Vice-Chair of the NCBA PAC committee, been a National Top Hand for 15 years and has placed third in recruiting 3 times, as well as being a participant in National Young Cattlemen's Tour.
"Continuing to build on the momentum we have generated during the past year and leading the Iowa cattle industry in an expansion mode is my goal for 2008," said Carstensen. "We have unique opportunities to take advantage of ethanol co-products as feedstuffs giving us a competitive advantage over producers in other regions of the U.S.," continued Carstensen. "ICA needs to be a catalyst in the transfer of technology to allow this potential growth to become reality," concluded Carstensen.

Read news from 90 years ago in
The Odebolt Chronicle of January 17, 1918.

There are extracts from letters of young men from the area who are serving in the armed services during World War I.  Read about the Red Cross activities of local ladies to support the war effort.  Also, for those of us of a certain age who were in high school when Frank Shaw and Rosmer Bruce were on the faculty, there's this:

School Notes.
Odebolt [met] Lake City Friday evening in the initial debate for the local school and although they did themselves proud in their first effort along this line they lost the debate.
The Odebolt team was composed of Rosmer Bruce, Louise Barclay and Frank Shaw.

The Mayor Sez…
By Iowa law a new council is not bound to any provisions, agreements, or deals made by the old city council. They are bound only to our city ordinances and Iowa Code. I am not aware of any major policy changes at this time.
Some items of concern for 2008 are as follows: expansion of our waste water facility due to new DNR requirements, finishing our entry signs project, a costly refurbishment of our swimming pool (pool bottom and walls), downtown old building dilapidation, sewer line replacement, and who knows what other surprises the State may require us to do.
The Prestin bequest to the fire dept and library was greatly appreciated. Hopefully, others will consider this course of action.

The Mayor Sez…
Whew! The holidays are over. Winter officially began Dec. 21st and we will be settling in for the beginning of 2008, the new year. At least the political hot air is about to subside. If time goes as fast for you as it does for me, it will be Spring before we know it.
We begin working on our city budget for ‘08/’09 and I really don’t think there is a need to make any major changes. We welcome any comments, or suggestions, that you, as tax payers may have. If your taxes increased on your property it was more than likely the county raising your assessed valuations. Our local one-cent sales tax option has really helped us adjust for the higher costs of running the city. May we all get off to a good start for the new year.
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor

P.S. A reminder that the after-prom committee will have a can pick up from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6th. Just put them on the curb or you may drop them at Faith Lutheran Church (by the back door).
