7/20 Chamber of Commerce July Yard of the Month
The winners for the month of July are Doreen and Don Schmidtke at 610 W. 2nd Street. Slow down and take a look at the results of their hard work the next time you pass by!
The Mayor Sez…
How time flies!!! When you read this one-half
the month of July will nearly be gone. Won’t be long and the football
boys will be “padding up” getting ready for the coming season. As a
matter of fact, school will be starting in a little over 5 weeks. I’ll
bet some moms and dads are ready for that. As for the kids---that’s
another matter. We hope a number of you attended the open house last
Sunday at the Peterson House; The Questers are proud of their work in the
preservation of this 1886 home. See you next week!

R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt
Odebolt Corn Producer visits Japan - It is a rare
occasion when an Iowa corn producer has a chance to get acquainted with a
corn processor in another country who is using U.S. product. That's
the opportunity Jim Meyer of Odebolt had recently, when he went to Japan
on behalf of several groups that serve Iowa corn growers.
Last year, the U.S. shipped over 600 million
bushels of corn to Japan, its number one export customer. U.S. corn
goes via the Gulf of Mexico, where it is loaded on Panamax ships that take
60,000 bushels at a time, and delivered to one of Japan's 17 ports.
The U. S. Supplies over 80% of Japan's corn, and
quality is an important issue. Transportation, brokerage fees by
trading companies, and repeated loading and unloading decrease the quality
and increase the price for Japanese processors. The #1 corn sold
locally for $2.50 per bushel will be #3 corn and cost more than $8 per
bushel in Japan.
In Japan, the government and consumer groups put
a high value on non-GMO corn. Many believe that modifying the
genetics somehow makes the product hazardous to eat. Managers at the
Japanese corn processing plants understand the improved value and safety
of genetically improved corn but are not willing to remove food labels
that say "Made from non-GMO corn" because they fear a consumer
backlash.
Iowa corn with built-in corn borer, rootworm, or
weed control traits has to have Japanese government approval before it
will be accepted and paid for. Japan currently allows up to 5% GMO
traits, and U.S. is currently at about 2% GMO traits.
Meyer stated, "I was asked to go to Japan to
meet with Japanese corn processors, who like to talk directly to owners of
the products they buy. The trip was a success. We had the
opportunity to thank them personally for their business and assure them we
are interested in supplying their needs. I traveled on behalf of the
Iowa Corn Growers Association, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (which funds
export market development), and the U.S. Grains Council, which works with
USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service to increase our exports."
"I was also speaking for Novecta, a company
jointly owned by the Iowa and Illinois Corn Growers Associations,"
remarked Meyer. "Novecta's purpose is to help grower members
improve profits from growing value-added and/or specialty corn.
Novecta can play a key role in assuring Japanese buyers that they are
getting corn produced according to their specifications."
Meyer continued, "Throughout the trip, we
told our Japanese customers that we can supply corn grown the way they
want it, and we would expect to be compensated accordingly. I feel
good that we were able to strengthen our two-country relationship."
"The IGCA is a good example of how we can
accomplish as a group positive results that would be extremely difficult
for us to do as individual farmers. Based on my experience, IGCA
membership and my contribution of checkoff dollars to the Iowa Corn
Promotion Board are both wise investments," concluded Meyer.
Note: Jim Meyer represents Crop District
4 (West Central Iowa) on the Iowa Corn Growers Association Board. He
was pictured with several other U.S. Corn Growers Association members in The
Chronicle.

Peterson Pioneer Open House Held - An Open House
was held at the Peterson Pioneer Home on Sunday, July 11, 2004. The
Peterson Pioneer Home is the oldest home in Odebolt, Iowa that remains as
it was originally built. Furnishings in the home are as near as
possible of the late 1880-1890's.
Nils Magnus Peterson and his wife Maria (Mary)
Caroline Olson came to Odebolt from Sweden in 1885. On December 28,
1885 they purchased a lot in Odebolt for $100 for their homestead.
Erection of the house was started and completed
in 1886. Thus, the Peterson family were among the earliest
residents. The town of Odebolt was laid out and lots were sold in
1877.
Five children were raised in this prairie style
dwelling. The last of the Peterson family, Edith, passed away in
1973. The house then became owned by the City of Odebolt.
When Edith passed away, the Tlobedo Questers
asked to have permission to restore the house to its original state in
preparation for the town's centennial celebration during the summer of
1977. Items for the home were either loaned or donated.
Five of the original members of Tlobedo #485,
chartered in in 1970, are still living and very much interested in
"their house." Present members include Donna Blake, Thelma
Dresselhuis, Phyllis Kies, Madeline Meyer, and Kathie Willhoite. Read

The Mayor Sez…
Remember that old saying, “Don’t mess with
Mother Nature”? Well, “Crick Days” week-end our theme was “Stay
Out of her Way”. To my knowledge all the events went off O.K. with
the exception of the tractor pull. Denny and his crew worked on the track
off and on all week, including Saturday, and guess what???? It
rained Sat. night and poof! Too much mud Sunday! The mud for the demo
derby just added to the fun! (A little bit??).
To all of our volunteers, both city and rural, a
hearty THANKS! Without you there would be no Creek Days. Thanks to each
and every committee chairman and their staff.
A special thanks to the ODC, the lead
organization, that does the forward planning. They meet monthly the year
around planning to insure that all the things come together in one
fun-filled weekend. Good job!!!
Everyone have a safe
Fourth of July!
