The Mayor Sez…
George Dresselhuis said that he used to have an old German friend that had a saying when it looked like the corn crop was lost to drought. It was, “Vel, vel, it always seems to rain at der last minute!” Last week the old German’s saying came true. Our area received more than two inches of badly needed rainfall. Hopefully there will be more.
For those of us that prayed for rain, our prayers were answered.
Letters have been sent to numerous residences that have let the weeds take over their lawns…..enough said!

     R. J. Rex, Mayor

No. 29, July 19, 2007

The Mayor Sez…
Our City Superintendent, Bill Tysor, and myself have been trying to get the “Detour” signs removed from North and South of town. It seems as though the DOT isn’t sure who has that authority. The governor………maybe?? Our newly resurfaced Hwy. 175 is a pleasure to drive on. Other than some shoulder work and the intersection at the lumberyard (North Main Street) I am told that the project is nearly done. Whew!!
Some Republican presidential ‘wannabes” along with our own Congressman Steve King were in town last week. I guess they figured there would be enough “hot air” without the mayor giving them a welcome. Anyway, a belated welcome, Steve.
I am told that we could be short of lifeguards after Aug. 11th. We are contacting other towns to see if they can help out. Many of our lifeguards go off to college. We are also exploring the possibility of using former lifeguards that live in the area as long as there is a certified lifeguard on duty. The last thing we want to do is close the pool.
I hope everyone read the informative editorial by Dorothy Evans in last week’s Chronicle about the fate of our school. Dorothy makes some very good points. I strongly urge people to call our school board members to voice their opinions.
    From the ‘bolt,
    R. J. Rex, Mayor

Buehler Chosen for Sac REC Tour - Barry Buehler of Odebolt was among the more than 1,500 high school students from across the country who participated in the Rural Electric Youth Tour held June 9-15, 2007 in Washington, D.C.  Barry was sponsored by Sac County Rural Electric Cooperative.
While in Washington, the Iowa Youth Tour delegation, made up of 42 students, met with congressional leaders, visited historic sites and explored the Smithsonian museums and nearby monuments.  The trip also helped to increase the participants' knowledge of cooperative electric utilities and American history.
Highlights included meeting with their representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senators Harkin and Grassley.

Youth Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity - (Photo) Thursday, June 29, six Odebolt youth traveled to Lakeside, Iowa to help in building a Habitat for Humanity home for a woman and her two daughters. Those participating were Steven Roeder, Marcus and Ali Hansen, Kim Neumann, Tayli Thompson, Jenny and David Currie, along with their leaders, Steve and Kris Gunderson.
Several of these young people will also be heading for Kentucky on a church mission trip in late July.
This is the eighth Habitat for Humanity home built in the Storm Lake area.  Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday mornings are the days and times that work on this home is being done.  Volunteers are welcome.  The contact person is Susan Moore at 712-732-49550. Visit Habitat for Humanity

Odebolt Sign Project Successfully Underway - On Tuesday, July 17, Odebolt sign committee members Vance Lundell and Kristan Bieber presented an update on the project to the Rotary Club and Mayor Ron Rex.
At the beginning of the month Gary's Backhoe and Trenching Service donated services to  tear down the old signs and dig holes for footings. Richard Sievers of Sievers Construction donated help with removal of the signs, construction of forms for the concrete footings and pouring concrete.  Delivery charges for the concrete were waived as a donation by Bedrock Ready Mix.  Tim Henkelman and his crew of Henkelman Masonry and Concrete Construction laid the brick for the columns.  A bill has yet to be submitted.
The initial estimates for the 4 new signs was $32,00 to $40,000.  The City of Odebolt has pledged $4,000 toward the project.  Vance and Kristan wrote a grant and received $7,000 from the Sac County Endowment Foundation.
To date, $9523.73 has been raised through business and private donations, and the flamingo fundraiser.  Many generous individuals who have contributed include Ruth (Treman) Wilimek, Tempe, AZ ($500) and Jerry and Donna Reynolds, Rochester, MN ($100).  Committee member, Howard Hustedt, has been instrumental in the initial fundraising efforts for the project.
The flamingo fundraiser is the brainstorm of Rotarian Rendee Wallace and has generated much fun and anticipation to see where the flamingos roam next.  Rendee donated the total start-up cost of $195.68 for the fundraiser.  Currently, over $1,400 has been raised.
The total amount raised so far for the sign project is $20,523.73 minus expenses, leaving a total of $17,503.23.
The next step in the project currently being worked on by Lundell Plastics Corporation is the routing, finishing and construction of the cedar wood signs.
Thad Diersen has offered land to the City on the west edge of Odebolt and as soon as the land can be cleared, work will begin on the fourth sign.

The Mayor Sez
Howard Hustedt reports that people and businesses have been very generous in their financial support of our new entry signs project. Vance Lundell also reports that the foundations for the signs are underway as we speak. Kristen Bieber says that the flamingos have been a big hit. Needless to say the City is quite pleased with the above project and progress thereof.
Denny Sykes and Mark Reis met with the City Council last meeting and gave us a very favorable report for Creek Days ’07. With a brief rest I know they are already working on Creek Days ’08. I simply marvel at the ODC and their volunteers, both town and country, that make it all possible. We Salute!!
I want to thank the ODC for presenting me with an “Outstanding Community Service” award.
Last, but not least, the spirit of downtown décor is alive and well. Sheryl, owner of Liaison’s Lounge, had a beautiful mural of flowers painted on the south side of her building. We Salute!!

Six Sets of Sisters--This year Odebolt-Arthur has six sets of sisters playing on their girls' softball teams.  They are pictured in this week's Chronicle.

Cattlemen Hold Auctions--At their annual steak fry on June 25, the Sac County Cattlemen auctioned off scholarship trophies and the trophies for the Beef Show at the Sac County Fair.  Purchasers are pictured in this week's Chronicle.  Purchasers with Odebolt business connections were Matt Huegerich for Iowa State Bank; Neil Sibenaller for United Bank of Iowa, Lary Schulte of UPS Odebolt and Thad Diersen of Pioneer-Odebolt.

Letter to the Editor--A letter to the Patrons of the Odebolt-Arthur School District notes that the Schaller-Crestland Community School District has contacted the O-A School Board regarding a meeting to discuss a possible future including the two districts.  The letter-writer urges patrons of the O-A School District to contact members of the O-A School Board with their comments regarding discussions and/or a possible future with the Schaller-Crestland school district before any final agreement with BCIG is implemented.  Read the entire letter in this week's Chronicle.

Flamingo Update--After a nice stay in the yard of Steve and Renee Bengford last week, the flamingos migrated to Mandernach Drive.  They originally stopped at Carol and Ruth Youngren's, but quickly moved about encompassing the neighbors' yards as well.  The neighbors must all be using the same "flamingo feed" for the birds to move about so freely among their yards.
They seem to be moving about this week in a random fashion and not staying grouped together.  Who knows what they'll be up to next week - rumor has it that Friedrichsens on Dewey Street have some of the same flamingo feed - talk to a Rotary member to find out.

Odebolt Museum Featured--Over the summer The Chronicle will be featuring photos of the Odebolt Museum in its new location on 2nd Street.  Please check each week to see the featured photos, then be sure to drop by the museum for an even closer look at Odebolt's history.  The museum is open every Sunday in summer from 2-4 p.m.  This week's photo highlights the museum's military displays. - D. Fundraiser Supplemented by Thrivent--Pictured in The Chronicle are Jeanette Wulf; Megan, Craig and Mike Irlback; Tami Hemer and Kris Schroeder at the Odebolt Community Center.  Funds raised for the Irlbecks at the June 24 fundraiser were supplemented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  In the photograph the Irlbecks are being presented a Thrivent check.

Johnson Receives Degree, Awards--Carol Ankerberg Johnson of Odebolt recently received her Juris Doctor degree with honors from Creighton University School of Law.  She received an award for Outstanding Service to the Law School and the Shkolnick Award.

Wilken Named GROWMARK Intern--Blake R. Wilken, son of Dave and Twyla wilken, is a participant in this year's GROWMARK summer intern program.  He is majoring in Agriculture Business at Iowa State University.  During the internship program, Wilken will spend 12 weeks working at New Century FS, Inc., located in Grinnell.  He will complete a special project through the company.

Class Reunion--(photo) The O-A Class of 1987 celebrated their 20-year reunion on June 16, 2007.  The reunion was held at Curt Wareham's courtyard in Odebolt with 26 classmates present.

July 12 - Note from Mayor Rex
The entire resurfaced section of Hwy. 175 from Quirk's corner to Ida Grove is passable, with some shoulder work still being done.  I am working on getting all the detour signs removed from all directions that are out 3 miles or more.

July 11th - Notes from Mayor Rex
A street overlay project is presently in progress in Odebolt on 4th Street from West Hwy. to Hanson Blvd. and on Lawndale from 4th to 2nd Street.
The traffic lights are DOWN at the Hwy. 39 / 175 intersection (thank goodness).  Hopefully the misleading sign 3 miles south on Hwy. 39 due to the recent detour has been removed.  I will check with the DOT.
The Max Byer house on the corner North Main and Walters Street burned to the ground last Friday. The fire started in the kitchen from hot grease and the Odebolt Fire Department was there "Johnny on the spot" about 3:30 p.m. to put it out with minimal damage to the house. The Fire Chief checked the house about 10:30 p.m. and stated that "The walls were cold". However a call came in from a neighbor about 2:00 a.m. that the house was ablaze and despite efforts by the firemen, it ultimately burned to the ground along with the big garage that was just to the east of the house.

JULY 5TH - NOTES FROM MAYOR REX
Tracks on newly poured cement on Highway 175 made Monday, June 18 by a pick-up and another vehicle that went past barricades caused $40,000 to $50,000 worth of damage.
Everyone is exasperated about the slow stop and go lights causing a wait at the railroad tracks at the Hwy 39 and Hwy 175 intersection. Besides disruption in traffic flow, it has caused difficulties for Cubbys, Beckman Motors and other businesses near the intersection. The intersection was to have been done weeks ago. The DOT and the Highway 175 contractors have promised to have the lights removed by either Saturday July 7th or Monday, July 9th. We shall see. In the meantime, try to be patient.
Odebolt Pool needs life guards for the month of August as college-age lifeguards head back to school. We hope to get some help from other cities so that we don't have to close the pool. See City Hall if you can help us out in August as a lifeguard.
There have been no applications as yet for a part-time police officer for Odebolt.

Let's Keep Swimming!
Many of us remember spending idyllic summer afternoons at the Odebolt swimming pool. The bath house and mechanical house need repairs and improvements. Amy Stangl has taken on this community service project to help her fulfill requirements to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award.   As of mid-June she had raised about half of the estimated cost for the improvements.
Let's ensure that the current generation of Odebolt children can continue to enjoy the pool. Donations may be made to the Odebolt Pool Project account at United Bank of Iowa.

Old MacDonald's Farm--(photo) Recently children who had attended activities at the Odebolt Public Library were treated to a field trip to a farm north of Odebolt which is operated by Ross and Valorie Craig.
Solo Flite Inc., an Iowa not-for-profit Christian ministry, purchased an acreage at 3191 Esther Avenue, north of Odebolt, three years ago. The board of directors envisioned a wonderful opportunity to further its goals of serving the youth of the area. The acreage includes a turn-of-the-century home, huge barn, and several other farm buildings. "It seemed just what we needed to extend our ministry," said Ross Craig, a member of the Board. Craig and his wife, Valorie, live on the property as managers. He also serves as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sac City.
"We saw the potential for an 'Old MacDonald's Farm' with lots of animals," said Valorie. "These animals are a delight to the kids who visit the farm. In addition to the animals, the plans call for facilities for grandparents and parents to bring their kids to visit the farm for an extended period of time, but lots of work is yet to be done before that dream is a reality. We hope to recondition the barn and corn crib to retain their original appearance."
Animals on the farm which the children may visit include: two hinnies (donkey-horse cross), named Thelma and Louise; three steers named Nubbin, Askew and Spot; ten goats; several pot-bellied pigs; chickens; ducks; geese; turkeys; guineas; and New Zealand White, California, and Flemish Giant rabbits. There are also about 150 laying hens and 175 Cornish cross broilers. The farm sells rabbits as fryers or breeders, as well as the Cornish cross broilers and fresh eggs. "We also hatch eggs to add to the collection of feathered creatures," Valorie commented.
New additions to the collection born or hatched recently include baby turkey, chickens, rabbits and goats.
Visiting youth groups include students from area schools, Sunday school classes and families with small children. There is no charge to visit the farm, but reservations are requested. The Craigs may be reached at 712-668-4245. - D. Cleveland

AREA STUDENTS
Students named to the 2007 spring semester Dean's List at Iowa State University include: Steven Leege, Alison Neumann, Katie Schroeder and Catlin Thompson of Odebolt.
