West Nile virus caused by mosquito
bites! What next? Anyway, we can help ourselves by doing
the following: get rid of any stagnant water around your property;
if you are prone to mosquitoes biting you - wear long sleeved shirts
and long pants, and use a mosquito repellent. In just a few
weeks, old Jack Frost will be taking care of the problem 'til
spring, maybe longer.
As promised, the third "C" is
Coordination. It is vital that merchants coordinate their
shopping hours, advertisements, sidewalk sales, facade improvements,
and banners to let customers know they don't take their patronage
for granted.
Attention all you amateur sleuths!
The "ball bearing bandit" has struck again.
Surprisingly, we know quite a bit about the person, but can use some
help. There may be a reward. If you are interested in
this case, call me for further info.
R.J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt
(Note: For those who may not know, the "ball bearing
bandit" comes out with a slingshot late at night shooting ball bearings
through windows of businesses, and may then lay low for months
before striking again.)
West Nile Virus Found in Sac
County - West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can
cause encephalitis or meningitis. Most people who are infected
with WNV either have no symptoms or experience mild illness such as
fever, headache and body aches before fully recovering. Some
persons may develop a mild rash or swollen lymph glands. At
its most serious it can cause permanent neurological damage and be
fatal. Symptoms of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
include the rapid onset of severe headache high fever, stiff neck,
confusion, loss of consciousness, or muscle weakness, and may be
fatal. If you develop signs of encephalitis you should seek
medical care immediately.
American Legion to Observe
"Patriot Day" - September 11 has been officially
designated by Public Law 107-89 as "Patriot Day". On
September 11, 2002, the Odebolt American Legion invites the public
to gather at the Town's Square at noon to observe this National Day of
Commemoration. Pastor Glenn Lundahl of Odebolt Faith Lutheran
Church will give a brief message. Patriot Day will be a day to
remember the victims of the attacks that senselessly ended the lives
of thousands on September 11, 2001. What happened on that day should
never be forgotten.
NW Iowa Athlete of the Year - James
Lindgren has been named 2002 Northwest Iowa Male Athlete of the Year

record relay units in the Medley and 4 x 800. In football, he
is second on OA's all-time lists for career points, touchdowns,
rushing yards and total yards rushing and passing and led OA to its
first state playoff win in school history. In basketball
Lindgren was First-Team All Conference, OA MVP, and earned Academic
All-State honors. He ranks third all-time at OA in career
points and career assists, fourth in career field goals, and fifth
in steals and field goal percentage.
School Board Elections are
scheduled for September 19, 2002 - Deb Bengford and Paul Rydberg,
both of Arthur, will be on the ballot seeking the two open seats in

The Odebolt Nursing & Rehab

The Mayor Sez...
Drivers, attention please, school has
started so let us all be a wee more careful, especially at the
intersections. Our kids are out and about, so take care.
I visited the ODC and the OCC meetings last
week and am pleased to tell you that I detected a high state of
enthusiasm at both meetings.
The second "C" for downtown success is
"Colorfulness." Bright banners, storefront colors,
and interesting window displays give people the impression people
can shop and be entertained at the same time. Hey, Chamber,
you are on the right track - Salute!
R.J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

the Community Center. Flags around the downtown area will be
taken down on a Saturday in September and volunteers are needed.

month. Come and join!
Firefighters to help MDA - The
Odebolt Firefighters will participate in a fundraiser called
"Fill the Boot" on August 30 and 31, 2002, to benefit the
Muscular Dystrophy Association. They will be out on the town
on Highways 175 and 39 on Labor Day weekend with their boots to
collect donations for MDA. Please say hello and drop dollars
and change into their boots. Last year the program raised over
$14 million nationwide for children and adults battling
neuromuscular diseases. Governor Vilsack has officially
proclaimed August as "Firefighter Appreciation Month" to
honor firefighters for their efforts on behalf of MDA, which
receives no government funding and charges no fees to those families
served.
LOGOS Coming Soon! -
A group of laypeople and the pastors of Faith Lutheran, Odebolt
United Methodist and First Presbyterian Churches are planning a

kids. A part-time director will be hired this fall to lead the
program's development. Four people attended LOGOS training
last month in Marion, Iowa and others will be going to Osh Kosh,
Wisconsin in late September. For more information on the
program, contact Pastor Glenn Lundahl of Faith Lutheran at 668-4515.

Heard an interesting analogy the other
day - It was comparing communities to like riding a bike. When
riding a bicycle you are either pumping the bike to keep moving
forward, coasting, or stopping. There are communities that
keep "pumping" to keep moving forward, there are
communities that are just "coasting, and there are communities
that have just plain stopped. What is Odebolt?
Personally, I think a little of both
pumping and coasting. The ODC needs groups and individuals to
"step-up" and volunteer to help for next year's
"Creek Days." Let's keep "pumping" that
Odebolt bike instead of coasting.
There are 6 C's that spell success for
"downtowns." The first is cleanliness. The
cleanliness of a downtown makes a clear statement. The
statement is either, "We want to invite you to visit" or
"We don't care." The second "C" will be in
next week's column.
- R.J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt
O-A Booster Club Sign-Up - The
OA Booster Club is in its 21st year of supporting O-A student

There will be Creek Days in 2003!
Members of the
Odebolt Development Corporation (ODC) met at Caroll's Kitchen with
representatives of Odebolt churches and organizations as well as
interested individuals the evening of August 14 to ask for help in
planning, promoting and presenting Creek Days 2003. Kristy
Rosemeyer, Executive Director of the ODC, asked representatives of
churches if they would be interested in all aspects of running the
food booth on Saturday. She said that the Odebolt Community Center
had already expressed their willingness to run the food booth on
North Main at the demolition derby on Sunday. Kristy suggested that
the churches could rotate from year to year, and if all five
churches participate, the responsibility would fall to an individual
church once in five years. Representatives of Faith Lutheran and
Trinity Lutheran agreed that their churches would participate in the
rotation to run the Saturday food booth, with Faith Lutheran running
the booth in 2003. The logistics of preparing and serving food are
much more manageable now that the food booth is in the Odebolt
Community Center. Kristy pointed out that in all the years she has
organized the food booth, she has supported local businesses by
purchasing groceries from the Odebolt Jamboree store and meat from
the Odebolt Locker. She said that the responsible church could use
the proceeds as a fundraiser, keeping the profit from it. After the
church had paid its expenses, the ODC would ask 10% to cover
promotion and liability insurance.
The ODC asked for
help by sub-committees in all the other aspects of putting on Creek
Days, including entertainment, advertising, set-up, clean-up, the
beer garden and band, souvenirs, craft fair, volleyball, the
three-on-three basketball tournament, the Saturday morning walk and
Bingo. Rose Schultz and Tammy Bengford enjoy organizing the parade
and are willing to continue. Representatives of the American Legion
offered their services as Bingo callers. Members of the Rotary Club
had already volunteered their services to do something, Kristy said.
Tom and Carolyn Hoelscher and Bob and Janet Leonard volunteered to
take responsibility for the beer garden and band. Everyone agreed
that the band at this year's celebration, "Ransom", was
very good, and should be hired for next year.
Kristy said the ODC
was very pleased to have been able to distribute $15,500 in profits
from Creek Days 2002 to various community organizations. Jim Scott,
representing the American Legion, volunteered that the Legion was
very grateful for its distribution from the ODC.
There was a lively
discussion about possible new events and attractions to include and
how to solicit community participation in planning and implementing
Creek Days 2003. Sub-committees and contact persons will be listed
in the Chronicle several times to encourage more volunteers to sign
up. A non-resident alumnus suggested that classes holding reunions
during Creek Days could perhaps volunteer as a group to help with
something. Updates on the Odebolt website, www.odebolt.com, will
keep former residents informed.
Everyone agreed that
security was very good this year, particularly because of closing
the street in front of the community building. Kristy said that
Police Chief Henderson had reported no incidents of rowdiness
The ODC members were
encouraged by the spirit of cooperation at the meeting and agreed to
continue serving. Everyone else gave Kristy Rosemeyer and the
members of the ODC an enthusiastic round of applause for all their
hard work in presenting such a successful Creek Days 2002.

Odebolt Lilies . . .That's what we have
at the community berm at the Memorial Walk Park. On a recent
trip to Illinois, Renae and Randy Babcock brought back clumps of
some "Odebolt Lilies" and they are safely in the
ground. Give Renae or Randy a holler to learn more about
them.
From what I have been told, the future
sounds very bright for our Creek Days Celebration. I will keep
you posted. I, personally, would like to thank the Odebolt
Development Board Members and the present and new committee
volunteers. The City administration is solidly behind you and
your accomplishments: past, present, and future.
If you don't already know, Odebowl Lanes
has been sold to Dean Richardson (class of 54) and has been renamed
"The Alumni Club." His son will be the manager and
lunch and evening meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Glad to have you in Odebolt, Dean and family.*
R.J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt
P.S. Just got word from the Iowa Cattlemen's
Assn. that the rumor about McDonald's using imported beef is just
plain bull! Do patronize them as they are good for both grain
and livestock products and that's good for Iowa.
* My critics (and that's OK) will try and
take me to task for doing a commercial on the "Alumni
Club." Dear Readers, please do not misconstrue the
difference between a commercial and a WELCOME. It is the mayor's
way and I am sure I speak for our administration in being very
pleased to see our new Alumni Club prosper, employ people, and draw
people and visitors to our town. Thank you.
July Yard of the
Month - The July "Yard of the Month" was presented to
Don and Doreen Schmidtke. The award includes a plaque and an
Odebolt flag. If you are driving by 620 West 2nd Street, be
sure to look at their picturesque yard.
Camp Out - The
Brownie Girl Scouts celebrated the end of the year with an overnight
camp out on June 28th and participated in an obstacle course,
scavenger hunt and a late night nature hike with flashlights.
Sac County Fair Queen
Heather Phillips, 18, of Sac City was crowned as the 2002 queen on
August 1 by the 2001 Fair Queen Kara Gunderson of Odebolt.
Tisha Schofield, daughter of Kristie Henkelman of Odebolt and Tom
and Danell Schofield of Cedar Falls was a member of the court.
Papers filed for
School Board - Deb Bengford and Paul Rydberg, both of Arthur,
filed nomination papers to fill the expiring terms of Bruce Raasch
and Roger Buehler on the Odebolt-Arthur School Board.
Cheers to the Alumni
Club - When Darrel (Dean) and Lynn Richardson, formerly of
Odebolt, were back visiting his hometown and heard that Odebowl
Lanes was for sale, he headed back south to Florida to tell his son,
Scott O'Daniel of the possibilities lurking at the bowling
alley. Scott, age 30, formerly of Chicago, along with friends
Johnny Welsh, 31, formerly from Colorado, and Missy Persinger, 21,
formerly of Ohio, put their head together and started planning for
their new business, "The Alumni Club." The three of
them worked together at a restaurant in Destin, Florida where they
had recently made their home.
Scott is the general manager, Johnny is the
assistant general manager and bartender, and Missy is the Main
Server/Trainer for the restaurant/bowling alley. The Club will
be open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bowling leagues and open bowling will
also be available.
The Alumni Club held its grand opening on
Monday, "August 5th with nearly 300 people being served a
buffet-style supper consisting of BBQ ribs, chicken breast filets,
steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and salads, as well as
$1.00 drinks. Supporters of the opening listened to the tunes
of the Musical Knights D.J.'s while treating their taste buds and
mingling with friends.
The three friends are excited about their
new business. They claim that Odebolt "has the most charm
they have seen in any small town they've been to." They
"feel like they're at home here because of the warmth of their
outstanding welcome."
If you've worked up an appetite be sure to
stop out. One item on the menu, Jack Daniels Chicken, is
definitely going to tempt your appetite - a signature chicken dish sautéed
in Jack Daniels and Madeira wine, then blended in mushrooms, garlic,
heavy cream, shallots and a secret spice, all built over mashed
potatoes and served to your delight. Coming soon...August 17th
- Sunday Brunch!
ICCI demands County
Health Action - About a dozen Iowa Citizens for Community
Improvement members called for the Sac County Health Board to
recommend to the county supervisors a one year moratorium on new
construction of large livestock or poultry confinement operations in
the county. On Tuesday, July 29 at the health board's quarterly meeting, CCI members followed up a May presentation to the
board about health hazards that factory farms bring to the
county.
CCI members at Tuesday's meeting reiterated
their message that factory farms pollute the county's air supply
with hazardous hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Studies by
experts have indicated that antibiotics fed to livestock in factory
farms and applied to cropland in manure are washing into streams
where they could contribute to a rise in antibiotic-resistant
bacteria and pose serious health risks. Manure spills, leaking
manure lagoons and pits, and the over-application and reckless
spreading of manure are a major threat to the purity of Iowa's
streams, rivers, and groundwater.
Health board members seemed reluctant to
take action and sought more time to conduct research. Local
CCI members are calling for the Health Board to protect the health
and environment of the community and move forward with passing a
recommendation for a moratorium to the county supervisors.
"Factory farms are a public health
issue. The Health Board must live up to its responsibility of
protecting our air and water by passing this
recommendation." CCI member LaVola Stenoien of Odebolt
said.
"Sac County already has too many
factory farms. Hog giant Iowa Select has at least 22
sites. Sand Livestock Systems wants to bring 70,000 finishing
hogs to Iowa, including Sac County. Bil Mar Foods wants to
build 12-18 corporate turkey units in Sac County. And Prairie
Horizon Farms is looking to build near Sac City. We don't need
any more factory farms in Sac County!" Stenoien emphasized.
Seven other Iowa counties have already
passed moratoriums which include Cerro Gordo, Adair, Madison,
Taylor, Clarke, Floyd and Boone County. Several other counties
have already passed health ordinances related to factory farms and
more are considering passing moratoriums against factory farms.
The moratorium would apply to facilities of
1,000 animal units or approximately 2500 head of finishing hogs in
total confinement at any one time. It would not affect
independent family farmers. CCI supports independent, family
farm hog producers.
"We strongly oppose large-scale
corporate-owned factory hog farms because they pollute our air and
water, threaten our health, and destroy our quality of life,"
said Stenoien.

The Mayor Sez. . .
Kudos to co-chairmen Dave Wilken, Kay
Bloyer, Janet Leonard and staff for a "light the Ball
Park" golf outing and fund raiser last Friday. It is just
one of the many exemplary community efforts that a group of
determined individuals can accomplish. Sac County Mutual
Telephone in conjunction with INS were the sponsors and I might add
contributed generously to the project. Besides great local
support it was nice to see some neighbors from other communities
join in the fun. Johnny Orr, as usual, contributed with his
wit and good humor. Thanks to the bidders that played golf
with him. My apologies if I left anyone out.
So far the response has been positive from
the people that have received letters to repair, or replace, their
sidewalks either this year or next. This is a long overdue
project!
