The Mayor Sez…
“Crick Days ‘06” was a tremendous success! Many
of us are still in awe of the overwhelming attendance for both days. Special
thanks to Kris and Steve Gunderson and the ODC members for their cleanup on
Sunday morning. A huge thanks to Larry Schulte’s Cropmate for the use of the
land and facilities for the tractor pull and derby.
The meeting with DOT last Tuesday noon was ‘standing
room only’. I am not sure too many business people were satisfied with what
the DOT told us about closing 175 while resurfacing next summer, but, at
least, I think they went away knowing that we need access to our businesses,
no matter what!! In the words of Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”.
Maureen Wilson from Sen. Harkin’s staff and Dave Ehler from Congressman King’s
office were in attendance and are keenly interested from a loss of business or
loss of jobs stand point. They will be monitoring the situation as it
develops.
Like it or not, the 4th of July weekend is upon us.
Have a safe one!!

Odebolt Library to host Book Signing - A book signing event will be

south of Fort Dodge. Her family farm and other farms were purchased in
1968 by the State of Iowa to form the Brushy Creek Recreation Area and lake
which was completed a few years ago. Her family farm is now under water.
The book is a true story of the Royster farm family
from the late 1800s until 1968. It is filled with stories of the creek
children, country school, mischief, and Royster family stories and history.
The Brushy Crick Kids will remind you of yourself or someone you know.
This is the California author's first book and she is
now writing a novel.

Letter to Odebolt.net Editor
My daughter forwarded the recent
odebolt.net newsletter to me; I read it with great interest! It's been
many, many years since I was last in Odebolt but I remember it fondly. (I
graduated from OHS there in 1939, then went on to the University of Iowa
to major in journalism.) My parents were Don and Rena Mullan, now long
since deceased.
I'm still writing for our local newspaper and enjoy
doing it very much. That's in addition to being very active in the area
branch of the National League of American Pen Women and in a local writing
group, the Easy Writers, in addition to writing short fiction and poetry.
(I've won some very modest prizes for my work.)
My husband, Andy Kennelly, may be remembered by a few
old-timers as he worked on the old Odebolt Chronicle. Back in the WWII
days, he led a small group of big three B24's in buzzing Odebolt, which
caused a little excitement back in those days! However, he wound up more
sedately as a PhD graduate from the University of Iowa, which eventually
led to a vice presidency at what was then California State University,
Hayward, now California State University, East Bay.
Is anyone left from the OHS class of 1939?

The Mayor Sez…
You have heard me say that ‘Creek Days’ is one of the
best things that has happened to Odebolt…ever. The reason is “YOU”. Whether
you were a visitor, a guest, an attendee, or a worker, it made “Creek Days
‘06” a most memorable one.
Thanks to the ODC and all of the committees that
made it happen. Special mention to the new addition of the truck show, it was
spectacular! The parade was great! The car show, just great, and thanks, Vance
L. The museum was a big hit. As you would guess our museum board will be
working on the basement space for more items of yesteryear to be displayed.
The Presbyterians had a great food stand. How can the tractor pull and demo
derby get any better? (but they do). Thanks for all the financial support for
the finale, the fireworks display, and to Bill T. and his crew that made it
happen….We Salute!!!
I see where some ‘joker’ posted a sign on our newly
acquired downtown lots. The sign reads “Future Home of Walmart”. Now, then, we
know that is not going to happen, but it makes one think about the potential
of a new building that could be used for any number of things. Anybody out
there with some venture capital? It could be a mini mall with many, many
spaces for rent? Trust me, if you let your imagination work a tad, you can
come up with many different kinds of businesses to occupy a mini mall. This is
just one more idea of many on how to use the three lots.

Questers’ Annual Tour - Ten members of Tlobedo #485
took their annual tour on Monday, June 12th.
Their first stop was at the “Hub on 5th” in Sac City
for specialty coffees and coffee cake. The next stop was in the City of Fonda
where they visited the Normandy Cottage Antiques owned by June Swain. June has
many interesting and lovely items for sale. A few doors down the street the
tour visited the Fonda Museum that is privately owned by Gib and Jan Alpers.
The Alpers have done a marvelous job of collecting and displaying Fonda
memorabilia. Gib Alpers has restored old autos and a couple were on display.
Several of the refinished display cabinets came from the Odebolt Drug Store
when they had their public auction. Anyone may visit this museum by calling
for an appointment (712-288-6675 or 712-288-6175) and the Alpers will be happy
to accommodate you.
We then visited the Glassworks, a stained glass studio,
owned by Annie Reiff, a transplant from the Pacific Northwest. She does repair
and creates. We discovered that she and her husband are pilots and spend 5 to
6 months a year flying patients about in Central and South American. What an
interesting life they lead.
Lunch was enjoyed at the Bank Bistro. Owner Doug
Kruchten had a contract to take down the building, but opted for restoration
of the adjacent Hay Market Bar and then a café in this old bank building on
Main Street.
After lunch, we visited McMullan Antiques. Paula and
her husband moved to Fonda about eight year ago after tiring of California.
They repair and refinish antique furniture as well as have many for sale.
We motored back to Sac City and stopped at Sac City
Collectique, located downtown, owned by Margaret Schramm. The store is full
and requires time to see all see has for sale. A quick stop at the Villager
quenched our thirst and we continued on Hwy. 20 to Early, Iowa, where we had a
wonderful tour of the Anita and Jay Coon Home. It is a treasure and Anita
enlightened us on its history.
Hostess for the tour was Madeline Meyer and all thanked
her for a full and enjoyable day.

Odebolt Town Sign Project Fund-Raising Begins
Donations are coming in for the Odebolt Sign
Project which was conceived by two local businessmen, Vance Lundell and Howard
Hustedt. Upon hearing of the project, Rotary Vice-President Kristan
Bieber got involved and wrote a district grant to receive matching fund
through Rotary.
Fund-raising efforts began during Creek Days and will
continue throughout the summer. Each sign is estimated to cost between
$5,000 and $10,000 but those costs continue to go down as more volunteer labor
becomes available and material donations are made. If you are interested
in volunteering services or materials, contact Kristan Bieber at The
Chronicle, 712-668-2253, or Vance Lundell at Lundell Plastics, 712-668-2400.
Monetary contributions toward the project can be made
at United Bank of Iowa in Odebolt, given to any Rotary member, or mailed to
Rotary, c/o Tom Down, P.O. Box 451, Odebolt, IA 51458.
"Nuns on the Run" performed at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab

spirituality by lip syncing to a list of songs with a religious theme.
The ladies have earned $70,00 in the past ten years which they donate to
charities, churches and toward scholarships. The "nuns" had the ONRC

Trees to be planted on Hanson Blvd.
The family of Henry Lewis Hanson, has donated two trees to
Odebolt in his memory. Elaine Rex has arranged for the
trees to be planted on Hanson Boulevard this week.
Henry's daughters, Jo Grossmann and Kay Hardy Campbell,
and their husbands will be in town this weekend, Friday and Saturday, June
23 & 24th as representatives from the family. Henry's wife, Dorothy,
and sons Mark and Eric are unable to be here.
Henry Lewis "Hank" Hanson was born in 1921 in Odebolt,
the son of Zella and George Hanson. He graduated from Odebolt High School
before leaving to attend Iowa State during World War II. He was a
patent attorney during his life, and passed away March 14, 2006.
His grandfather, also Henry Hanson,
settled in Odebolt in 1878. He was instrumental in planting many
trees around the town of Odebolt, was active in early town activities and
served as Mayor. Odebolt City Park, once known as "Hanson Park", was
named after him, as well as Hanson Boulevard. It is largely because
of his influence that Odebolt has so many beautiful old trees, and keeps
up a tradition of planting trees.
A book, The Family of Henry Hanson and Augusta
Mathilda Ekblom, written by Henry Lewis Hanson, is located in the
Odebolt Public Library.
The family members will have private memorial service to bury their father's
ashes on Saturday at the Odebolt Cemetery. At
1:00 p.m. on the 24th they will gather to view the trees on Hanson Blvd.
Daryl Cleveland will take photos and town representatives will be present
for the occasion.
Kay Hardy Campbell stated, "We have always had a high regard
for Odebolt, and we want to give something back to the town in a way that
echoes both the spirit of my father and my great-grandfather. Also,
we are truly grateful for all the work that Elaine Rex has done to make
our dream of donating trees a reality. It's one thing to want to do
something like this from a long distance, another thing to find someone
you've never met, who takes care of it cheerfully! She has once
more demonstrated to us that Odebolt remains a remarkable place, full of
special people."
The
women also intend to show their husbands around the town that Kay says
"has always been legendary in our family."
A
history of Henry Hanson is located at The Odebolt History Pages
for those interested in reading more about the family's influence on
Odebolt.

The
Mayor Sez…
NEWS FLASH!!!
Due to the need for re-surfacing of Hwy. 175 the DOT has proposed to lay
asphalt from Ida Grove east to the Sac/Ida County line with a pilot car to
regulate traffic from Arthur to Ida Grove in the summer months of 2007 .
At that same time they propose to completely tear up
and close the road from the Sac/Ida County line, west of Odebolt, all the way
to Quirk’s corner; this will include the entire 175 Hwy. thru Odebolt with NO
PILOT CAR AND NO TRAFFIC.
On this sector they will detour all traffic from the
south and north, too, resulting in no outside-traffic from any direction
resulting in total “outside traffic” isolation to the City of Odebolt. To
put it another way, in this mayor’s opinion, ‘complete economic
strangulation’.
You ask for how long? The DOT says approximately four
months. Who knows!! Rainey weather could slow completion of the project into
the fall harvest season. No road, no access to our coop grain storage
facility???
What of ambulance and fire department services?? What
of our local businesses that depend upon outside-traffic? Who can survive this
economic disaster?
The next question you may ask is why not use an asphalt
overlay all the way to Quirk’s corner. At least, it would allow traffic to
pass thru Odebolt from all directions with a pilot car east and west
regardless of weather. Many, many asphalt roads carry truck traffic causing no
more wear and tear than concrete roadways.
In one discussion I had with a DOT representative he
said that we can save money by eliminating the pilot car and the employees

taken tender care in restoring and arranging each item in the museum to its
best advantage.
The museum will be open during Creek Days on
Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. They

Caroll's Kitchen was featured in the "Food" Section of the Sioux City
Journal, June 14, 2006 in an article entitled "On a (cinnamon and dinner)
roll; Pies and other desserts serve as a lure to Caroll's Kitchen in
Odebolt".
When I talked to Caroll Kies at the cafe today, she
stated that the reporter, Tim Gallagher, stopped in for breakfast one
morning, had a cinnamon roll, and came back the following Monday to interview
her. She said that she has had out of town people stop in for rolls as a
result of the article.
I noted that today at noon the case which usually has
cinnamon rolls in it was marked "Sold out"!
As readers probably know, I have often extolled the
virtues of Caroll's baking, and especially her pies; I have never tasted
better (including my parents' scrumptious pies!).
Caroll's Kitchen at 214 S. Main Street in Odebolt is
open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Creek Days visitors
will miss out on Caroll's delicious cooking and baking; the cafe is closed on
weekends.

The Mayor Sez…
A very important part of Odebolt’s infrastructure is
our cemetery. Due to a number of reasons they need some financial help.
Basically, costs of keeping the cemetery well-kept have gone up and their
revenue has done down. Things are being adjusted, but for the interim period
please send them a check to help out. Thank you.
While I am talking about the cemetery, I would like to
comment on the Memorial Day service conducted by Commander Jim Scott and his
legionaries, assisted by Phyllis Tiefenthaler and the legion auxiliary. It was
a very impressive ceremony to say the least; Leonard Carstensen did a great
job as speaker. Thanks to Barb Votrobeck and the OA band members for the
patriotic music; it was enjoyed by all. We salute!
Now it is time to direct our attention to Creek Days
2006. From what I have been told we are in for two great days of fun and
entertainment. June 17th and 18th are not far off.

Message on the Wind—Residents at Odebolt Nursing &
Rehab Center released about 50 balloons on May 15 as part of a celebration of
National Nursing Home Week. Messages enclosed in each balloon asked the finder
to write back to the ONRC residents and let them know a little about
themselves and where they found the balloon. Last year letters came back to
residents from as far as Omaha and Minnesota. A photo in this week’s Chronicle
shows ONRC residents watching balloons as they floated upward. The sky was
splashed with many flying colors for a moment, and then they were gone, high
into the sky.

Seven thousand people saw Odebolt carry

Firemen's association, the most successful race meeting ever held by

Odebolt has now held the belt longer than any other
team in the association. In the past 10 years Onawa has had the
trophy three times, Odebolt four times, Carroll once and twice the
association has not awarded it to any team.

Geo. G. Smith deserves the lion's share of the credit for the success
of the Odebolt teams. Along about the first of the year, when the
snow is still on the ground, "Kelly" begins to figure out a line-up
for the coming year and from then on he devotes time and energy toward
rounding it into shape that would cost the fire department big money
if he asked any remuneration for his service. Kelly is never
discouraged, he is always sure that his team can win and eventually it
does. There was nothing slow about Kelly's kid team. They appeared
to equal advantage in the parade and in the races. And the line of
rooting they handed out was something fierce.

ODEBOLT OBSERVER June
1, 1881
Great annoyance is expressed by those having
gardens uninclosed [sic], at the depredations of the cows which are
suffered to run at large. A daily herd run by Charlie Stearns has its
headquarters west of Walnut street, and cows are turned out by their
owners to make their own way to the rendezvous. This they do by taking
in all the unfenced gardens on the way. Jake Gable had a fine garden
utterly destroyed by these brutes the other day, and their owners
ought to be made to pay the damage. Others have suffered in a similar
way. The owners of cows should take care of them. It may seem a little
thing to the owner of the cow, but is a big thing to the owner of the
garden. If there is any thing that will make a peaceable man raving
mad and lose confidence in earthly things, it is to have his garden
which represents the toil and anticipations of a whole summer,
devoured in four minutes by a slab-sided old cow. So far as we have
seen, there is nothing in the New Testament or in the late revision
that at the moment offers adequate consolation to a man so afflicted.
[Townspeople kept milk cows in those days.
Odebolt Observer, May 18, 1881:
Charley Stearns has started a town herd.
It already numbers 40 head.]
--Main street is being rounded up and the low places filled.
--A bell now surmounts the M.E. place of worship--Masonic Hall--and
calls a sinful world to prayer.
--The excavation of the new brick block of Mr. Wright, corner of
Second and Maple streets, is about completed and the foundation
commenced. The work will be pushed forward as fast as possible. The
block when completed will cost $10,000.
--Jake Gable offers his interest in 50 cabbage plants, 1 bed of
lettuce (more or less,) 1 ditto radishes (more or less,) a fractional
acre of potatoes and other garden truck (that was,) for information
that will lead to the apprehension of the base-bred bovine that
devastated his patch. Apply at the telegraph office.
