The Mayor Sez...
Last week I sent a general thank you to everyone that made our Creek Days 2003 such a tremendous success. I would specifically like to thank the 4-H kids for the "dirty" clean up job they did on Sunday. Also, to the ODC and their many, many volunteers that pitched in to make it all happen. If I wrote down everyone's name I would run out of space. The important thing is that you know who you are and we know who you are. We Salute!
- R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt.
P.S. Please advise me what "option 4" is pertaining to the school editorial someone sent me.

Early Deadlines - The Chronicle will have an early deadline because of the 4th of July. ALL ADVERTISING must be in by noon and all news articles by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2. We thank you for your cooperation.

This is one of the biggest celebrations in Sweden and from this day forth, the balance of the year's days will be shorter!

Rotary Clubs to hold Raffle to  Raise Dollars and Feed Hungry in Zimbabwe  - The Odebolt Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Rockwell City Rotary Club and Rotary International, is planning to ship a container of soy protein products to a Rotary Club in Zimbabwe, Africa. There will be no costs for the 20,000 to 30,000 pounds of soy protein thanks to the American Soybean Association and many processors of soy products. The Rotary organizations' goal is to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of shipping each container from here to Zimbabwe.

As Iowa Rotarians, the Odebolt group feels this project is a winner because "we are sending our home-grown products to another Rotary organization in Africa. This assures that everything will end up where it is supposed to," says President Gordie Boerner of the Odebolt Rotary Club.

Members are raising money through donations for raffle tickets for a grocery prize give away. Three prizes will be awarded. A $300 grand prize and two $100 second prizes will be awarded for groceries at the Jamboree Foods stores in Odebolt or Wall Lake.

Curt Raasch, Odebolt Rotary Club member and area farmer, is also a United Soybean Board (USB) director. Through his work in USB, Raasch became aware of the immense need for protein in African countries through the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), and conveyed the need to fellow members.

WISHH promotes the use of U. S. soy protein products in developing countries with help from the soybean check-off, where the protein deficiency in human diets is acknowledged as a serious problem. WISHH activities range from developing higher-protein breads that are sustainable for Afghanistan relief efforts to identifying new uses for soy-fortified noodles in Indonesian school lunches.

The objective of WISHH is to increase the international consumption of soy protein by humans, especially in developing countries, while increasing the marketability and demand for U. S. soybeans.

"This is a great thing," says Mick Menage, local Rotarian. "We're taking an Iowa commodity and doing good to help hungry people in a part of the world that needs much help."

The winning raffle tickets will be drawn at the Odebolt Rotary Club meeting on July 15.

O-A School Board Tables Sharing - from the Ida County Courier, by Deb Loger, 6/19/2003
"The Odebolt-Arthur School Board put off making a decision Monday until the October board meeting on entering into negotiations to whole grade share. As the result of that decision, the board sends a message to the Schleswig School District that O-A isn't interested in sharing junior high athletics this fall."  See the article on the School Board meeting.

A Creek Days message from Our Mayor:
Hey, fellow Odeboltians ... company is coming.  What do we do when company comes?  Why tidy up, of course!  Hopefully everyone will pick up around your homes, cut the grass, take care of an unsightly mess that you have been intending to do, and the bottom line will be that Odebolt will really look nice for Creek Days.
All the hard work you organizations have been doing is about to pay off!
After a recent meeting, the senior meal situation is still up in the air, however, a suggested plan is being reviewed.  More news on that later.

Trojanettes Softball News by R.J. Rex
June 17 - Tuesday
- The high flying Nettes softball team was derailed last evening by a very fine Westwood of Sloan team. An outstanding pitcher from Westwood and far too many errors by the Nettes contributed to the loss. Coaches Iverson and Scott will have a one day breather to prepare for a neighbor rivalry against Wall Lake View Auburn Thursday.  All was not lost against Westwood as the JV'ers whipped Sloan quite handily!  I would be remiss not to mention that both Varsity and JV Nettes have a very fine pitching staff with excellent records.
June 16 - Monday
- The Nettes varsity softball team hammered River Valley last evening for another conference win. Coaches Bret Iverson and Kris Scott put another notch in their win belts. The JV team didn't fare as well as they could not overcome an early lead by the opposing River Valley team.
June 11 & 12 - Coaches Brett Iverson and Kris Scott came home Wed. eve from Sac City with varsity and junior varsity wins, 6 zip and 4 zip respectively ----- then traveled to Whiting Thurs. eve and whipped them 7 to 3. The JV's tied 2-2 (there is no substitute for good pitching, good batting, and good defense.) The Nettes are undefeated in conference play. RJ

The Mayor Sez...
I recently attended a seminar put on by the Iowa League of Cities on how to deal with the apportionment cuts that our legislature enacted. The meeting was on a very positive note and dealt more with how to find additional revenue rather than cut back on our key and vital departments (police, fire, library, pool, etc.).  One of the most important items discussed was the local option one cent sales tax. It is absolutely mandatory that Sac County pass this option as it is our "survival kit" for the future. About wherever you go out of Sac County to shop, you are spending an additional one cent that goes to that particular city.  Need I say more...
   - R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt
