The Mayor Sez…

Last week I talked about keeping our kids and our people safe. I would like to elaborate on that a tad. Over the years, in my opinion, we have enjoyed excellent police protection. This protection will continue ONLY we will be covered by the Sac Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Our present Chief, Sonny Bruns, will become a sheriff’s deputy and will continue to reside in Odebolt. This plan will begin the 30th of this month and will be on a trial basis for the remainder of 2009. After careful deliberation by the Council, and myself, we felt that we will have far better 24/7 coverage at a substantial savings to the taxpayer. Given some time we would appreciate any comments that you might have. We have one of the best sheriff’s depts. in the State and I am sure they will prove out our action in the coming months.

 - R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Faith Lutheran Receives
2009 Governor’s Volunteer Award

Faith Lutheran Church received a Governor’s Volunteer Award at the 26th Annual Governor’s Volunteer Award Presentation Ceremony during a special ceremony held June 23 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The Governor’s Volunteer Award program was established in 1982 to honor and recognize volunteers for the commitment, service and time that they contribute to Iowa's government agencies and nonprofit organizations. More than 680 volunteers were selected for awards in 2009. Volunteers may be nominated for an award in one of three categories: Individual, Group, or Length of Service. And, for 2009, a special category was added to recognize disaster assistance and recovery volunteers.

Faith Lutheran Church was selected for the Group Award by Cathy Mather from Iowa Department of Transportation for over ten years of participation in the Department of
Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway Program. It is a great honor to be recognized for longevity of service to the program.

The Governor’s Volunteer Award program is coordinated by the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and the Governor’s Office. A complete list of 2009 award recipients is available at www.volunteeriowa.org/awards For more information, visit www.volunteeriowa.org or call 515/725-3094.

During the Fireman's Breakfast on Saturday during Creek Days, Bonnie and I sat with Ken Muckey.  He may be the person who traveled the farthest to attend the 2009 Creek Days.  Ken, who graduated from Odebolt High School in 1939, came all the way from Anchorage, Alaska.  We forgot to ask him if his class was having a 70 year reunion.  Ken remembers carrying the football for Coach Hiram Covey and still has the sterling football award for winning the Maple Valley Conference championship in 1938.

We also enjoyed talking with Elaine (Dannenberg) Raasch, who may represent the oldest person who graduated from Odebolt. We think that Elaine graduated in 1933!

Garrett Neville and Kaylene Johnson were chosen by Roose Post #313 of the American Legion, Odebolt, to attend Boys State and Girls State.

Jean Volkers presented one of the programs which entertained the children at the Odebolt Public Library during Summer Reading Week. Additional guests during the week at the library were Ray Leege; Jane Hogue; and Deb Loger, accompanied by Toby.

During the week of June 1-5 over 35 children enjoyed the Odebolt Public Library, each day participating in Summer Reading activities. They were photographed sitting on the outside steps leading to the Carnegie library building.

Some members of Mrs. Lapel's 5th grade class are pictured on a page of their letters to the editor. They recently spent about 1-1/2 hours pulling all sorts of trash out of the Odebolt Creek, and the photo includes some of the items they collected. With the summer season and Creek Days on the way, they thought it would be a good time to remind Odebolt to help keep our creek and town "Green". Their letters express their disbelief and disappointment about what they pulled from the creek, and they make pleas to everyone to care for the environment.

Kurt Wareham and family of Odebolt recently planted five flowering trees south of town to help beautify the south corridor of Odebolt.

Creek Days weekend is always a great time to catch up with old friends or enjoy a summer weekend with family, but it's also a great opportunity to support your community. Since 1999, the Odebolt Development Corporation has donated over $30,000 to local projects such as the Odebolt Community Center, the pool, cemetery, museum, tennis courts, the Odebolt sign project, the Odebolt-Arthur Education Foundation, as well as local emergency services and youth groups. All of these funds were raised at Creek Days, so when you buy your Creek Days t-shirts or tickets to Creek Days events, when you donate your money to support Creek Days or donate your time to volunteer at Creek Days, you are contributing to your community.

The Mayor Sez…

I thought it might be appropriate to get out pen and paper and make some comments. Some may say, “R.J., you have been away too long”, and others might say, “Not long enough!”
I would like to talk about volunteerism. Volunteerism is the heart of a community, and BOY, does Odebolt have heart. The museum, ODC and Creek Days, the City park group, Memorial Walk Park, the Walk berm volunteers, entry sign committee, Odebolt Betterment Comm. (trees, bushes, road-side park clean-up), FFA, Tree City, Peterson Pioneer Home, O-A Education Foundation, Rotary Club, the women’s clubs, 4-H groups, Faith Lutheran Church (swimming pool $’s) and other churches, library board, fire dept,, school board, City council, and on and on. Let me know if I left anyone else out. Most of us fit into one of the above categories whether it be active service or thru generous $’s contributions. There are just a few CAVE people left……..citizens against virtually everything. Thank goodness!
One of the most important jobs that I have is to try and insure the safety of our kids and our people, and by gum, I am doing my best to do just that!
Don’t forget to tidy up; company is coming!! Creek Days is next week!
 - R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Mark Hansen is pleased to announce that "Mark Hansen's Rex Chevrolet GMC has been identified by GM as one of its key dealers for the Chevrolet and GMC Truck brands." Rex Chevrolet in Odebolt will not be eliminated as part of GM's restructuring process.

According to Mark several factors were key to his dealership's attractiveness to GM: adequate working capital, modern facility, consistently high satisfaction ratings from customers, numerous awards, well trained employees, and a great customer base. Mark assures his customers that warranty coverage on GM vehicles will continue without interruption, whether they already own a GM vehicle or intend to buy a new one. Incentive programs will also continue.

Rex Chevrolet has served northwest Iowa since 1925. Floyd Rex founded the company and was the dealer until 1958 when his son, Ron Rex, purchased the dealership. Mark Hansen became the dealer in 1989. Mark would like to acknowledge all his loyal customers for making this all possible.

Join Hands Day is a Thrivent Financial event that is held on the first Saturday in May every year. Faith Lutheran of Odebolt met April 19, 2009 and walked the ditches of the first 3 miles of Highway 39 south of Odebolt and cleaned up garbage and other debris.
