The Mayor Sez…
Due to some thieving of automotive radios recently, I
would like to remind everyone to LOCK your vehicles at all times. It is a
proven fact that a locked vehicle is the best deterrent to any kind of
thieving. (I have often wondered how many vehicles parked around town are left
unlocked?) While I am on the subject, I would strongly recommend locking your
homes and apartments at all times. Sad, but true, we do not live in the same
way of life we enjoyed a number of years ago.

The Mayor Sez,
According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, Sac County
is one of only 13 counties in the State without any city/county local option
sales tax. Supporting a local option sales tax in Sac County would mean that
you will be supporting projects here at home – just as you support other
community projects when you shop in their retail sector.
Just a week away from the month of April. I hope that
March will go out like a lamb!

Alice loved to paint, much to the delight of her many

well known for her baking skills, especially her homemade pies. Her
children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the joys in her
life and she loved being with them.

Nursing and Rehab Center on March 16, 2005 in Odebolt, Iowa. Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 21 at Faith Lutheran Church in

Dorothy Charlotte Carlson was born December 16, 1916 in
rural Odebolt, the daughter of Sigurd and Anna (Anderson) Carlson. She
attended country school on the corner of her parents' farm in Richland
township, and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1934. She attended Drake
University for one year, after which she taught country school at Cook #9 and
Richland #3.
On August 15, 1937 she married Robert McCulloch Girvan.
They began married life working as "hired hands" on several farms during the
Depression, later moving to Odebolt, where Bob was a carpenter. Over the years
they became parents to five children. They farmed the Carlson farm in Wheeler
Township from 1957 until retiring to Odebolt. The couple enjoyed two trips to
Scotland to visit Bob's mother and relatives. They were married for nearly 63
years.
Dorothy grew up in the Mission Covenant Church, later
transferring to Faith Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday and Bible Schools,
was a Sunday School Superintendent and belonged to women's groups. She spent
her life serving her church, her family and others in the community.
Her passion for learning began at age four when she
taught herself to read. A born teacher, she loved words for their expressive
power and subtle nuances. She was a prolific letter and story-writer, as well

natural world, and the seasons and rhythms of farm life. She enthusiastically
taught her children about such things as wild flowers, birds, or
constellations of the night sky. Among things Dorothy loved were her children
and grandchildren, watching her wrens, autumn vistas, crossword puzzles,
Donald Kaul columns, ice cream, picnics, reading and singing to children,

HISTORY NOTES: from
Harve Keller
Harve sent in the following from "Fifty Years of Progress", The Odebolt
Chronicle, Volume Fifty-One, No. 31, August 25, 1938.
Too Much Medicine:
Permit Taken Away
An Odebolt firm was issued a permit in 1885 to sell
intoxicating liquor "for medicinal purposes."
The permit was taken away a few weeks later when an
investigation of the books showed that the shop had made 160 sales of
intoxicating liquor on its opening day; that the sales numbered nearly 1,500
during the first month; and that three members of one family were sold 42
gallons of whiskey and 40 gallons and 20 bottles of beer - all for "medicinal
purposes."

THANK YOU -
On behalf of my family, I would like to extend
thanks to those in the Odebolt community and beyond who celebrated our mother,
Dorothy Girvan's life with us. Thanks to everyone who sent cards,
e-mails, memorials, flowers and food; to dear friends and relatives who shared
stories of how Mom touched their lives. Special thanks go to Pastor Trish
Underberg and the members of Faith Lutheran Church; to Kay Blessington, A.R.N.P.,
for kind and gentle medical care; to Farber and Otteman Funeral Home for their
expert attention to the many details
We thank the entire Odebolt Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center staff for their tender and
professional care of our mother during her time there, and in her last days.
We believe better care than what is offered at ONRC would be very difficult to
find. The small-town tradition of caring for its own is obvious in all
phases of the residents' lives, and the affection and friendship among
residents and staff is very apparent.
Thanks also to the ONRC Auxiliary and all the church,
school and community groups for the many special things they do to enrich the
lives of the ONRC residents.
As our parents’ health failed these past few years
we've made more frequent and lengthier visits to Odebolt. We’re comforted to
be engaged again in the rich community life of the town and in the genuine
affection its people have for one another.

The Mayor Sez,
There is momentum picking up over a countywide one-cent
Local Option sales Tax. Bear in mind it wouldn’t be used to lower property
taxes as much as it would help keep from raising them. The money must be
earmarked for specific purposes such as swimming pool, streets, etc. And can
be shared by percentages such as swimming pool 20%, streets 20%, etc.
Petitions will be out soon to be signed and presented
to the Board of Supervisors. Odebolt’s share is estimated to be approximately
$44,000.00 annually. This money would be used for exactly what it would be
intended for – to keep from raising our property taxes. Remember, when you go
to Storm Lake, Sioux City, Denison or wherever, you are paying that penny into
their coffers. Why not let others help us pay for ours?

one time only, on Friday, March 18th at 7:30 p.m. Boo the villain!
Cheer on the hero as he attempts to rescue the sweet, young girl from certain
death at the sawmill! Make plans to attend now!

The Mayor Sez ...
Punxsutawney Phil, supposedly the one and only
ground hog from Pennsylvania did see his shadow on ground hog’s day in
February, meaning six more weeks of winter. It appears as though it is a
regional thing as the Northeast is having a rough winter and the Midwest is
having a mild go of it – so far. Maybe here in the ‘bolt we should have a
ground hog’s day and all the hoopla that goes with it. Our ground hog could
forecast the weather for the Midwest. (Anybody have a pet ground hog?)
Anyway, when this gets read, it will be March and
spring won’t be far off. Alright!

Obituary: Pearl Katharine (Hoefling) Howard, age 98, of
Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Horn Memorial
Hospital in Ida Grove. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 23rd,
10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt with Reverend Charles
Bulger officiating. Burial was at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of
the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Pearl was born February 6, 1907, to Conrad and
Katharine Anna (Messer) Hoefling in Odebolt, Iowa. She grew up on a farm just
North of the town of Odebolt, attended the Odebolt Public School and graduated
from High School in May of 1925. After graduating she stayed at home to help
her parents on the farm. She was married to Harry E. Howard on January 18,
1937. They were blessed with two children: James and Arlene. Pearl and Harry
then purchased their own farm North of Odebolt where this family resided until
Pearl and Harry retired in January of 1970. They then moved to town. Harry
passed away July 22, 1971. Pearl continued being an active member of the
Odebolt community the rest of her life.
Pearl was baptized March 20, 1907, at the Salem
Reformed Church in rural Odebolt and was a member of that church until she
transferred to First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt in 1945 where she was a
member. She was a Deacon of the church for three years, a member of P.W., and
the Martha Guild. She was also a member of Isis Club, a Birthday Club, and a
volunteer at Colonial Manor Nursing Home for several years.
Pearl was proud of being one of the oldest living
graduates of Odebolt High School and also the community. Reaching the age of
98 and still living independently in her own home was a proud accomplishment.
She continued enjoying visiting with friends and family and recalling memories
of her lifetime.
She was a devoted wife to her beloved Harry. Raising
her children, seeing them educated and being a viable presence in the lives of
her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest joys. She loved
all children and they in turn loved her.
Many people were recipients of her talents with quilts
and sewing crafts.
Survivors include her children: James Howard and his
wife Jessie of Casper, Wyoming and Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Arlene Lange and her
husband Richard of Marshalltown, Iowa; three grandchildren: Shawn Lange and
his wife Mary of Creston, IA, Damon Lange and his wife Joy of Ft. Morgan, CO,

Harry; infant great-grandson, Spencer Lange; brothers: Millard, Earl, Harold,
and Leonard; and sisters: Esther and Lucille.
Obituary: Bev Carnine
Bob Carnine said goodbye to his lifelong partner and
friend, Bev, on February 23 when Bev passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in
Sioux City. Bob and Bev were married 54 years and had three children.
Pam, Ron and Julie were with their parents when Bev died.
Bev was born October 17, 1931 in Sac City, Iowa, to
Ronald and Eva Richards. Bev graduated from Sac City High School and
lived in Sac County her entire life. She married Bob on September 24,
1950. A whiz with numbers, Bev worked at the Sac County Mutual Telephone
Company so she could help her children obtain a college education.
Bev's family was her priority throughout her life and
during her brief illness when she worried about how Bob, her mother, Eva, and
the rest of the family would get along without her. Bev loved her
family, her home, living in Odebolt, reading, trees, flowers, lakes, deer,
cardinals, daytime snowstorms, everybody's children, the color blue, movies
with happy endings, clean windows, purple starfish, rolling onions, and the
Saint Bobs' Salute.
Bev's family and friends loved Bev for her commitment
to providing a loving home, kindness, patience, quick wit, sugar cookies,
courage, generosity, chocolate popcorn, intelligence, carrot salad, creamed
eggs on toast and her no-nonsense approach to life.
In addition to her husband, Bob, of Odebolt, children
Pam and husband, Jay Butler, of Nevada, Ron and Vickie Carnine of Coffeyville,
Kansas and Julie and Bob Economaki of Des Moines, many others who loved and
were loved by Bev said goodbye to her during her hospitalization. They
included her mother Eva Richards, and brother and sister-in-law, Loren and
Bonnie Richards of Sac City, sister and brother-in-law Myrna and Rick Henrich
of Kiron, granddaughters Anna, Jennifer and Amy, their husbands, and Bev's
four great-grandchildren, Bev's aunts and uncles, Bob's brothers and sisters
and their spouses, nieces and nephews and their children and many neighbors
and friends.
Bev's father, Ronald Richards, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be held at a later date.
