The Mayor Sez
_Ben Hecht, famous writer and director,
once said, "I was born to write and write I will".
One thing my critics will agree with me on is that I am no Ben
Hecht! My sole purpose of "The Mayor Sez " column is to
try and keep the citizens informed of city activities, events, and to
highlight community projects and the people that make them happen. I
must admit that I have an ulterior motive and that is to get more people
involved. Remember you don t have to belong to a group or an
organization to be a volunteer.
_Attention walkers! The Odebolt Memorial Walk Park Board needs
your help. When you "walk the walk" please bring a bag with
you to put refuse in. Due to the wind (and litterbugs) we have a lot of
refuse at the park that needs to be picked up. The board members have
begun the clean-up process and will appreciate any help we can get.
Thank you.

judging contest, and a whole lot more. Tickets are $15. single and $25.

The Mayor Sez
_It is now time to dispel some myths about our
new community center. It is NOT going to raise your taxes; it is
going to be self sufficient; it will be finished; it will be used.
Now is the time to get your checkbook out and make a generous
contribution so you can share in the pride of having a new community
center. It is too late when you are "out on the
hill." Do it now! Don't wait! Your generosity and
financial support is what makes our beautiful memorial walk park what it
is today. "Both projects can be pride of the past and pride for the
future.
_We are very close to having our new water plant
online. According to the engineer..."very close".
_The water tower overflow problem with St.
Martin's has been abated.
_My hat's off to all of the people that made the Firemen's Dance a
smashing success.

Letter to
the Editor: Dear Editor: Hats off to all who were
involved with the firemen's dance. .... For all of you who
weren't there to support our firemen, you really missed it! The
DJs, Musical Knights, were fantastic as they played music for young and
old. George and Thelma Dresselhuis danced as if they were in their
teens. They were truly an inspiration to all of us! God
bless them for coming out and showing their support. The auction,
I thought, was a huge success. And for all you non-smokers, it was
a smoke-free environment! Thank you to the smokers for the
courtesy of taking your cigarettes outside. Overall, I hope the
firemen are pleased, although there could have been a lot more people
there. Please Odebolt, don't ever forget these important people in
our lives. We need to stand behind them 100%. Who knows when
they'll be needed at our home or place of business. Thank you
Odebolt Firemen for the great job you do and a special thanks for the
great evening! Hopefully next year there will be an even bigger
turnout. - Jeannette Fertig, Odebolt Iowa
The Mayor Sez - What a beautiful sight! Driving by the Odebolt Museum the other day, I
couldn't t help noticing how nice the building looks! Then my recall
kicked in and I remembered Coaches Larry Allen s and Al Wilke s football
team of 1999, crawling all over the building with ladders, paint, and
brushes. (Not to mention Thelma S., Verna Mae S., Carol A., Elaine R.,
and others mixing paint and brushing, too). Endeavors like the above
just don t happen. It is because a group of determined individuals want
to do something for the betterment of their community. We salute!!
- News Flash! Just
in---McDonalds and Burger King are using imported beef. I absolutely can
t believe it!! What an insult to Iowa and the other beef producing
states. My advice is to act accordingly, if you know what I mean!
- The fireman's ball was a terrific success at the
Community Center. It was well attended and a good time was had by
all!

to move the softball program to Arthur and use the Odebolt field for

The
Mayor Sez – The City will be glad when the installation of
the electronics will be completed at the new pump house. In the
interim, there have been several "glitches" (water tower
overflow and chlorinator problems). Please bear with us as we have
assurances from the overall engineering firm and the electrical
contractor that the completion date should be around the middle of
April. Steps are also being taken to make sure St. Martin's
parking area won't be flooded ever again (at least by the water tower
overflow).

The Mayor Sez - Sometimes we lose sight of the fact of what an
awesome job it is to educate and prepare our kids for adult life. Last
week, Elaine and I attended a Citizen Advisory Committee meeting at the
OA School. We both came home in awe of the fantastic job that Supt. Dick
Profit, faculty and staff do for our kids. Their primary concern is for
a good education for our kids and preparing them to go out into adult
life to excel, compete, get good jobs and be good citizens. Also, they
work very hard at preparing our kids for college and trade schools.
Please join me in supporting our administration and faculty in their
fine endeavor. - R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

OTHER NEWS
Historical News (from the webmaster) - The first Odebolt
cemetery was located one mile east and one-half mile south of town. When
the railroad came through in 1877, it was necessary that this location
be changed. It was at this time that H.C. Wheeler donated the original
portion of the present site. Approximately 76 bodies were brought in
from the first cemetery. Remaining additions to the cemetery were
donated by the late W.P. Adams, and the last addition in 1968,
consisting of 2 acres on west end, was donated by W.O. Bridge, of
Shinrone, Inc., formerly Adams Ranch. (from The Odebolt Cemetery -

Historical News (from the Webmaster): In 1896,
"Billy" Hamilton was the editor at The Odebolt Chronicle; J.A.
Reynolds was mayor of Odebolt; W.A. Helsell, president of the school
board; Henry Hanson, chief, and Joseph Mattes, foreman of the fire
department; W.W. Shanks, postmaster; and Otis Stratton, marshal. The
pride of Odebolt at that time was the Knights of Pythias Band, directed
by John Mengis, at the height of its popularity and famous over the
entire state. The fire department came home that year from the Maple
Valley tournament at Mapleton with most of the prizes and the
firefighters were royally welcomed on their return. (From W.E. Hamilton
and the Early Days of the Chronicle in Odebolt)
