The Mayor Sez…

Memorial Day weekend is about upon us! With the $2.70 gas maybe traffic will be down, but I doubt it. Drive carefully! Be sure to attend the ceremonies at the cemetery next Monday. Our local American Legion Post and Legion Auxiliary will conduct the program along with the OAHS band. The avenue of flags is something to see. Thanks to all the helpers that make it possible. We salute!
Wow! Three downtown buildings on 2nd Street are gone. It was a job well done by Dean Quirk, Bill Tysor, and the “wrecking crew”. Now comes the task of what to do with the space. Suggestions are rolling in: a City park, moving the Pioneer Peterson Home downtown, a new City Hall with ambulance and police dept. facilities, or may be all of the above?? The only thing I do know is that it will take some time and community assistance to sort it out.
I am beginning to see some ‘Red’ around town on Fridays. Those of us that wear red on Fridays are showing support for out troops, stateside and abroad. Someone asked, “Why the color red?” The answer is that it’s the same color as blood!
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Memorial Day News from the Past
(from the Odebolt History Pages)

Memorial Day
(from My Family in Iowa, 1878-1949,
by Dorothy Groman Ellis)

The cemetery was on the edge of town almost a mile out, but there was a sidewalk all the way for everyone's convenience, and there were quite a few soldiers from the Civil War and the Spanish War buried in the cemetery. Their graves were marked by an iron holder for a flag. On Memorial Day small new flags were put in the holders. Patriotic organizations would have seats put in hay-racks which had been decorated with red, white and blue bunting for all the young girls of the town to ride out to the cemetery. All dressed in white dresses with our hair long, in order to decorate the graves. Now each of us was supposed to assemble as many flowers as we possibly could. At that time of the year we counted on having snowballs, peonies, sometimes roses; if there weren't any roses, there were usually lilacs still in bloom, and a few other flowers. Each of us would get an armful of those flowers.
We would climb up into those hayracks decorated with red, white and blue bunting. I wish I had some colored pictures of that. It really must have been a rather colorful sight to see all these small girls with their white dresses and arms full of flowers. When we got out of the cemetery gates we got down from the hayrack and lined up two by two to march through the cemetery. At the first soldier's grave we came to, the first girl would put her flowers down. Her partner would put hers on the next grave, and so it would go until we had marched in and out all around the cemetery and had all placed our flowers. Then we, with a great many townspeople, would gather in the center and have a little program of patriotic speeches expressing our gratitude to these men who had been willing to give their lives for their country. It was quite impressive.

THE CHRONICLE, VOL. I. NO. 2. JUNE 3, 1887.  The Sons of Veterans made a fine appearance in the parade on Decoration day, their proficiency in the matter of drill eliciting much favorable comment. The firing squad, under the command of Ward Matthews, performed its duty at the cemetery admirably, the following members taking part in that feature of the program: Archie Widel, F. E. West, T. J. Shea, Devillo Peck, S. G. Reinhart and Will McKinney.

THE CHRONICLE, VOL. 4, NO. 3, JUNE 5, 1890.  Decoration Day.  Last Friday was warm, but not oppressive, and a goodly number of people were in from the country to witness the Decoration Day ceremonies. All in all, the observance was the most successful ever held in Odebolt.
Five soldiers sleep beneath the sod in the Odebolt cemetery: Charles Dingman, Adam Widel, Jacob Meyer, Geo. Perry and the father of the late Treasurer Marks. Mrs. H. W. Stratton, a member of the Women's Relief Corps, also lies buried there. The graves of the dead named were beautifully decorated.
The opera hall was filled to its utmost capacity during the memorial exercises, and never did an Odebolt audience listen to more eloquent and appropriate addresses than were delivered by H. D. Peck and Rev. J. C. Melrose. Mr. Peck was the first speaker, and for three-quarters of an hour he held the wrapt [sic] attention of the throng. His remarks were studded with gems of eloquence, and many passages brought tears to the eyes of his hearers. We never listened to a finer Decoration Day address than the one which stamped Herbert D. Peck as an orator of whom Sac county may well be proud.
Rev. J. C. Melrose, pastor of the Presbyterian church, followed in a brief but eloquent and thoughtful address which did credit to his scholarly training and made a profound impression on his hearers. It was a matter of general remark that two better orations had never been delivered in the opera house, and everyone felt glad that the Post had secured the services of home talent for the occasion. We very much regret that we cannot publish the full text of both addresses.

Did you know?  The original Odebolt Cemetery had a circular drive.  The drive began at the most northerly wrought iron gate.  That gate is no longer used . You can still see the drive's indentation in the grass north of the Veterans' Memorial.  West of the memorial, you can see where the drive curved to the south. The State Historical Society of Iowa Library in Des Moines has plans of the original cemetery.

COUNTRY GARDENS MAGAZINE
FEATURES PRAIRIE PEDLAR

The summer issue of Country Gardens magazine, published by Meredith Corporation recently hit the newsstands nationwide. The Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest publication features an 8-page pictorial of the Prairie Pedlar gardens in rural Odebolt. The story highlights the Green Team, a children’s garden club that meets at the Prairie Pedlar weekly each summer. Several area children who attend the popular classes have found their way into the magazine’s pages.
Jack and Jane Hogue, owners of the garden business, are encouraged with the enthusiasm that children have for gardening. “Gardening with children is an opportunity to share the tender miracle of each tiny seed, to carefully examine the living soil and its buried treasures, to celebrate the seasons, and to observe the cycles of nature. It’s also a great opportunity for us to enjoy our Eden from a youthful vantage point - with renewed freshness and vigorous energy. Teaching children to sow, tend, cultivate and harvest their garden bounty today may just plant a seed that will benefit them for a lifetime. We welcome the magazine opportunity to share our garden with readers across the country and hope that the article will encourage gardeners to mentor children and teach them the joys and satisfaction of gardening.”
The Prairie Pedlar is open daily. Visit Monday – Saturday from 11:00 – 4:00 or on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 – 4:00. Each Sunday in July and August, the Hogues host a guided garden walk at 2:00 PM that is free to the public.

The Mayor Sez…
Poppy Day is upon us! When you see one of the volunteers (bless their hearts) that are selling poppies; please buy one! You are helping a disabled veteran. They gave for their country and we in turn can give to them. Thank you.
Letters have gone out to owners of unkempt properties. The City is not in the mowing business, however, we will be mowing your tall grass, soon! I would like to think that you could get it mowed for less than 100 bucks! ‘Nough said!
Congratulations to all the graduates of ’06. There is a world of opportunity and choices for each of you. Good luck!
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Letter to the Editor

The members of the Odebolt Cemetery Board believe the citizens of Odebolt and surrounding communities should know that our landmark cemetery is in need of financial assistance.
The basic maintenance costs for mowing, tree and stump removal, gravel for the driveways, electricity, snow removal, minimal administrative and legal fees, monument repairs, and spraying have compelled us to ask for help.
Low interest rates have forced us to take money from our certificates of deposit each year over the past several years just to maintain the cemetery.  By using the principal from our certificates of deposit for yearly maintenance, this only further depletes our funds and our future financial well-being.
Perhaps you have noticed many names on the gravestones are not familiar and no longer in the community.  Surviving family members typically take care of their own family monuments.  It is through the Cemetery Board that the upkeep of the monuments for those forgotten families has been respectfully maintained.  There are hundreds of cemetery graves that have been neither visited nor memorialized each year.
Our community is blessed with many people who have "time, talent and treasure".  We are looking for volunteers with talent who could research the availability of grant money.  To those who can spare their time, we would also appreciate assistance with general maintenance each spring, as well as clean-up after summer and winter storms.
Ultimately we are in need of additional money to continue the care and integrity of our community's cemetery, where many of our/your family, friends, and neighbors have been put to rest.
We are hoping that many of you who are reading this could share your treasure by making a donation.  Donations can be dropped off or sent to the Odebolt State Bank, on behalf of the Odebolt Cemetery Board.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration,
Charles Gunderson, Sr.
President, Odebolt Cemetery Association
Tomas W. Down
Secretary-Treasurer
Odebolt Cemetery Association

The Mayor Sez…
I received this over the internet the other day.
“Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing red every Friday.  The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the ‘silent majority’.  We are no longer silent and are voicing our love for God, country, and home in record- breaking numbers.  We are not organized, boisterous, or over-bearing.  We get no liberal media coverage on TV to reflect our message or our opinion.  Many Americans, like you and me, and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Americans support our troops.  Our idea of sharing solidarity and support for our troops starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday sending a deafening message that ----Every red blooded American who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.”
If you like the above, dig out and don something red every Friday.
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Demolition on 2nd Street

(click photos to enlarge)

The east portion of the Lindquist
building still standing, on May 9, 2006.

Taken later in the day, the Lindquist building is gone.

The above two photos were taken by odebolt.net's photographer, Chuck Hanson, of the demolition in progress on 2nd Street in Odebolt.  The Linquist building (former Einspahr Furniture store) was structurally damaged by a lightning strike in late August, 2004.
Originally called the "Wright Block", it was constructed in 1881 on the southwest corner of 2nd Street and Maple Street by John Wright, and once held an opera house on the second floor.
Also scheduled for demotion is the old bakery building and the Keller Barber Shop building to the east of the Linquist building, which were also deemed structurally unsound due to the east wall of the Lindquist building falling to the east and stressing the other two buildings.
Demolition, which began on May 8th, 2006, was delayed due to funding requirements and arrangements for asbestos removal before work could begin. According to Mayor Rex, debris is being hauled to a site about a mile and a half south of the cemetery, where it will be burned, then buried, as agreed upon with the owners of the land.  The DNR would not allow the City to use the city dump, thus increasing hauling costs.
The City was hoping to find a cornerstone filled with historical items that was purported to be in the Lindquist building, but to no avail.
The loss of the three buildings will certainly make a profound change in the look of 2nd Street!

The Mayor Sez …
Creek Days soon will be here soon. Our Creek Days committees are working hard to insure that “Creek Days ‘06” will be a memorable one. If there is anyone that would like to volunteer to help in any way, just call City Hall and we will direct you to the right place. Creek Days is one of the best things that has happened to Odebolt over the past number of years and I personally want to thank everyone that makes it all possible. As you know, the Odebolt Development Corp. is the lead organization, so if they ask for something, please give them a hand. The City supports them whole- heartedly. Thank you!
P.S. My “tidy up” notice will be forthcoming.
     From the ‘bolt,
     R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

Tuesday Club Tour

The Odebolt Tuesday Club had their annual tour on Tuesday, April 18th. They traveled to Sioux City where they toured the Palmer Candy Company.  After a delicious lunch at Perkins they visited the Antique Store and enjoyed the variety of items available for sale.
The visit to KCAU TV was great. They met several TV personalities and had their picture taken with them. The next stop was the Sioux City Journal. It was very interesting and especially exciting to see the huge press and understand its abilities.
We stopped at the K Mart store on the east edge of the city and purchased twelve pillows to donate to the local 4-H group that has a pillowcase making project for the persons at CADA in Cherokee.
All in all it was a full day, but it was wonderful and all thanked Verna Mae Schwaller for acting as hostess and planning the activities.  - Elaine Rex

(May 1st addition) - The Sioux City Journal published a photo of the Tuesday club visiting the Journal in the Sunday, April 30 edition.
