memorial day service at the cemetery. The American flags flying and the beautiful flowers are a tribute to loved ones that have gone before
us.

The Mayor Sez...
It was a great day last Wednesday, the 14th of May, for the Odebolt Community Center!
I
am happy to report that an entourage of Jack Bensley, Sheryl Banasik (Region XII), Shirley Phillips of SETD,
Howard Hustedt, and "Yours truly" met with the Executive Board of "Vision Iowa" and came away
with $28,000.00. We would have liked more, however, we are grateful for what we got. Congrats to Mike Olerich and
his community center board and everyone else that made the above possible. Special recognition to the individuals
that put the grant application together as it represents hours and hours of hard work. We salute!
Odebolt hosted the County League of Municipalities last week. After a great buffet at
The Alumni Club, we were given a tour of Lundell Plastics by Vance Lundell. We were all impressed and thank
Vance for the great program. It was enjoyed by all.

HONOR THE VETERANS! Wear a Poppy! The American Legion Auxiliary Post 313 volunteers will distribute
the familiar red poppies, honoring America's war dead in the week prior to Memorial Day, May 16, 2003 in
Odebolt. The will be assisted by the Odebolt Girl Scout troop. The annual event pays tribute to those veterans
who have died in the last 75 years. It also honors the millions of Americans who have willingly served their
country in seven decades. The poppies are handmade by veterans in our hospitals, serving as therapy for the
patients, while raising funds to use for rehabilitation.

Vision Iowa Funds for OCC - Odebolt is nearer to having its community center, as the Vision Iowa
Board has granted them money. Two months ago the Vision Iowa Board met in Sioux City to discuss proposed
projects of Iowa cities and held that the Odebolt project still needed to be scored against standards. The
project cleared the scoring benchmark, and last week the board announced $28,000 in funding for the community
center. Odebolt had sought $58,000 for the project. The grant is also contingent upon $30,844 raised for the
project by June 1, 2003.
If all funding is secured, construction could begin this summer and be completed by the close of 2003. The
Community Center Board is also asking for the community's help and participating in seeking the needed
funds.

A hearty welcome to our two new businesses downtown, Unknown Treasures and Total Entertainment.
Sure had fun at the school house a few weeks ago. A group of volunteers gave talks to the various grades about the
importance of reading. Thanks to OA for a very good breakfast and an opportunity to interchange with the boys and girls.

Arbor Day. The morning was topped off by the 5th grade class coming down to the Odebolt Memorial Park RV Park and planting a tree

tree to take home and plant. Thanks to Barb Bloom, Lori Lapel and Michelle Walsh.

They did it! The legislature (including
our own elected legislators Senator Steve Kettering and Rep.
Mary Lou Freeman) voted to cut the counties and cities out
of 72 million dollars of State apportionment. What
this means to Odebolt is a cut of more than $26,000.00 (14%)
of the general fund budget. Guess what that
means? Eventually the City will be forced to cut back
on the fire dept., the police dept., swimming pool, library,
street dept., parks and more.
The governor and legislative
leaders call it "the reinvention bill." The
joke going around is that they ACTUALLY BELIEVE that their
"cuts" are "savings." They talk
about raising millions for economic development and forget
our most endangered resource - small cities, children and
families.
Folks, the bottom line is
"there is no bottom line!"

The Mayor Sez...
Get this - Our Iowa State Legislature hired a MINNESOTA consulting firm to find places to make cuts in our State's
budget. They found 72 million in apportionments to cities and counties that they have recommended to cut, and if passed, will receive up to
a 10% commission (3/4 of a million dollars). It seems the state is hell-bent to cut vitally-needed apportionment to our smaller Iowa Cities
and when confronted, they (legislative leaders) say, "Raise your property taxes if you don't want to make cuts." Folks, property
taxes are too high already and they say "raise them higher!" The threats to the smaller schools have already been made; next on
their agenda is cities with populations of 100 - 1,000. Their intent is to have ghost towns like Boyer all over the State and force us (our
cities) out of business.

Odebolt Receives Tree City USA Award - The National Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources - Forestry
Bureau is proud to announce that the City of Odebolt has received the 2002-2003 Tree City USA Award. The awards were presented to each city
by State Forester Mike Bandrup at the 13th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon held at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines on April 10,
2003.
Bandrup commented, "The Tree City USA Award is a symbol for communities who have made a commitment to the
management of public trees." The City of Odebolt sets an outstanding example to other Iowa communities on how valuable our forest
resource is by providing multiple benefits for future generations."
The City of Odebolt was one of over 120 Iowa cities to qualify for Tree City USA status. To receive the
