The
Mayor Sez…
Last Friday morning my thermometer had a reading a tad
above 50 degrees…..brrrrrrrr. I guess if we start sweating in 80 deg.
weather we won’t remember all the cold weather of this spring. .
Speaking of our memories, I think about this time last year I was
reminding everyone to think “Creek Days”. It will be upon us in just 3
weeks. Then, the 4th of July weekend comes and goes and
then---poof----summer is gone. Whoa, R.J., slow down and enjoy the
summer!!

Class of 1887

(click photo to enlarge )
The Odebolt High School Class of 1887
had a similar motto to that of the Odebolt-Arthur Class of 2008. The
1887 version, however, was far more succinct: "Not finished but
begun."
The Class of 2008 motto is "This is not
the end. This is not even the beginning of the end. But it is,
perhaps, the end of the beginning." - Sir Winston Churchill, Lord
Mayor's Luncheon, Mansion House, London, 10 November 1942, following
the victory at El Alamein in North Africa.

Visioning Committee Looking at Odebolt’s
Resources, Seeking Local Input
Thursday, May 15, 4:30-7:30pm
Odebolt Community Center
Several residents of Odebolt have been
taking an in depth look at various aspects of Odebolt that may affect
landscape enhancement planning as part of the 2008 Community Visioning
Program. The goal of the program is to develop a landscape plan that
illustrates the values, identity and vision of Odebolt. An important
part of this process is gathering input from community residents.
To better understand the Odebolt’s needs, representatives from
Visioning Program will be hosting a survey
workshop on Thursday, May 15, from 4:30 to 7:30pm at the Community
Center. Residents are invited to take an online survey and
express their views regarding community transportation enhancements.
Following the workshop, members of the Odebolt visioning committee
will meet at 7pm to compile the results of community inventories
recently taken as part of the visioning process. The workshop and
meeting are open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
Participants will discuss discoveries they made about Odebolt and
what opportunities and constraints exist in terms of landscape change.
The results of the visual quality, natural resources, and cultural and
historical events or places will be mapped on a large aerial map of
Odebolt so that the committee can identify relationships among
Odebolt’s features.
All residents are encouraged to attend this meeting to take part in
the mapping exercise and the discussion.
The Visioning Program is a transportation enhancement planning
program that assists members of Iowa communities in creating roadside
enhancement plans. The program gives residents a chance to participate
directly in the design process and encourages public involvement.
Residents who want more information or who are interested in
participating in the visioning process should contact Joan Godberson,
local committee contact at 712-668-2231 or Patty Petersen Trees
Forever Field Coordinator 319-934-3140.
The Iowa Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is sponsored
by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa
State University Extension Landscape Architecture and Trees Forever.

Filming of “Peacock,” sequences
set for May 6th through 9th in Odebolt
Here’s some information regarding the
independent feature “Peacock,” a psychological drama set to film in
Odebolt. Filming days in and around the First State Bank in Odebolt
will run from May 6th through May 9th.
“Peacock” stars Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page, and its
writer/director is Michael Lander. The film is being produced by
Mandate Pictures, who produced this year’s Academy Award-nominated
film, “Juno.”
A story summary of “Peacock” is as follows:
Cillian Murphy is John Skillpa, a shy and nondescript bank employee,
who leads a double life with a split personality disorder as "Emma",
his female alter-ego, who, so far, has never ventured beyond the
boundaries of John's house. But one day, when a train derails in
John’s backyard, the nosy neighbors in his small town of Peacock,
Nebraska finally meet John's "wife"—and the fragmented sides of John's
split personality begin to rip asunder.
Ellen Page plays Maggie, a struggling young mother who
arrives in town and holds secrets to John’s past.
On behalf of the entire cast and crew, we look forward
to filming in your wonderful town!

Read this tongue-in-cheek article written when
Odebolt's historic bank building was the center of attention during
its construction. Maybe this was Odebolt's first loafers' bench! The
Jos. Mattes block is the building on the southwest corner of Main and
Second streets, and "the tight board fence" was the one built around
the bank construction site. "Snoos" is the Swedish word for chewing
tobacco.

EASY LIFE CLUB ORGANIZES
The Easy Life Club, which has its headquarters on the
north side of the Jos. Mattes block, has recently incorporated and
elected officers. The organization has paid for the plank upon which
its deliberations are held and has decided to accept no donations of
any nature whatever. One of the first rules adopted was to the effect
that any member caught whittling at the home of the club will be fined
and sent to banishment for a period of one day from the accustomed
haunt. All members are required to shave once each week and the
surplus in the treasury will be used during the hot weather to pay for
lemonades or ice. When the bank building across the street gets above
the tight board fence the membership fee will be advanced to fifteen
cents. Charley Lindquist made application for membership but was
blackballed because none but those using "snoos" are admitted.

The
Mayor Sez…
In all my years of being in city administration I don’t
think I have seen so many challenges and they are all coming at the same time.
Our lagoon and waste water plant, by order of the DNR, must be up-graded to
the tune of around 1.8 million dollars (est.). Old, dilapidated buildings down
town and a few residential homes must be dealt with and sooner rather than
later. The “Visioning Grant” for along Hwy. 175 is just beginning. As I see
it, this project, if successful, could change the entire view and impression
of our city while passing thru on 175. At present I am sure we all agree that
some of the present scenery leaves much to be desired.
All of the above is going to take a lot of time,
planning, and effort and I am confident that we can rise up to meet the
challenge.

OBITUARY
DONALD MENTZER
Donald Ralph Mentzer, age 89, of Schaller, Iowa, passed away
on Monday, April 21, 2008, at the Trinity Regional Medical
Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday,
April 24th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt with
Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Burial was at the Schaller
Cemetery.
Don was born on May 28, 1918, on a farm in Cherokee
County, Iowa, to Ralph and Marian (Parker) Mentzer. When he
was nine, the family moved to Sac County to the farm where
Ray Mentzer now lives. Don attended a country school near
the family farm and Early High School.
On February 6, 1944, Don married Helen Godbersen at the
Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, where he was a long
time member, and served as a Trustee. Four children were
born to this union: Donna, Kenneth, Bruce, and Rick.
As a young man, Don started farming with horses, and he
was still farming through the 2007 harvest. Don was a loving
husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed family
reunions. Don especially enjoyed Christmas. A real tree and
lighting the fireplace provided a warm and loving homecoming
for all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
You could often find him at the feedmill having coffee with
his friends. He will be missed by many.
His favorite pastime was restoring antique tractors,
which led to a large collection, including the 1935 John
Deere A that was purchased by his father, Ralph as a new
tractor. These tractors were proudly displayed at many area
celebrations.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; his children: Donna
and (Gene) Cedar of Meriden, IA; Ken and (Linda) Mentzer of
Holstein; Bruce and (Jackie) Mentzer of Schaller; and Rick
and (Brenda) Mentzer of Schaller; ten grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren. Other survivors include his brothers:
Howard (Betty) Mentzer of Nemaha and Raymond (Marilyn) of
Early; sister-in-law Hallie Mason; many extended family
members; and a host of friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; one
great-grandson; two brothers: Homer in infancy and Russell
Mentzer and wife Lucille; two sisters and their husbands:
Lola and Everett Stoneberg and Joyce and Lee Mason; and two
nephews.

Excerpts from the
May 4, 1881 Odebolt Observer:
--H. C. Wheeler has just finished sowing
800 acres of wheat, and 200 acres of oats. He will sow 1500 acres of
flax within the next three weeks.
--In compliance with the order of the School Board, director Hanson
has had the grounds about the school house seeded to tame grass and is
preparing to set out shade trees thereon.
--Quite a colony of Swedes arrived here one day last week. They
managed to find quarters somewhere in town, and Saturday were buying

The Pastor, Elder and Trustees invite
you all to be present at the dedication services of the new church
building in Odebolt on Sunday, May 8th, at half-past ten, A.M.
A New Methodist Church
We understand the society and members of
the M. E. church will undertake the erection of a church building here
the present season. The congregation is quite large and the society is
now in a flourishing condition. No doubt our citizens will give, with
their well known liberality, to the enterprize [sic], and liberal
assistance is assured from the Building Association of that
denomination. Rev. R. S. Fysh, the pastor, will soon take the matter
in hand and see what can be done. A house of worship is badly needed
by the M. E. society, and it seems as though a little well directed
labor is all that is necessary to secure it.
