OBITUARY
Marlene K. (Lange) Ness was called to the
LORD after a long illness, in the early morning on May 11, 2009, at
the age of 65, in Williston, ND.
Marlene was born to Alvin and Catherine (Bettin) Lange
on August 13, 1943, in Sac County, Iowa. She grew up on her father’s
farm near Odebolt, Iowa. Marlene graduated from Odebolt High School
and the Omaha School of Business. She then moved to Ft. Dodge, Iowa
and worked for Avco New Idea in the steel buying department and in
1969 as registrar at Ft. Dodge Community College. During this time,
her beauty, class and attractiveness led to a part-time modeling
career that continued throughout her life.
She met the love of her life, Douglas Ness, and on
November 2, 1968, they were married. They delighted in raising three
children together. In 1972, Marlene and Doug moved to Williston
where they opened Bodo’s TV & Appliance Center, Inc. which they
owned for 36 years. She was a devoted mother and enjoyed the humor
and closeness of her family.
Marlene enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing,
camping, painting watercolors, reading, and being a hockey ‘Mom’.
Marlene especially enjoyed spending time with Doug at
their farm, Merriwell, south of Columbus. She loved animals and
adored Doug’s Red Labradors. Marlene was known for her incredible
gardening skills and picturesque landscapes surrounded by her
flowers. Marlene loved to bake and cook multi-course dinners for
family and friends. She enjoyed many friendships, and she will be
remembered for many things, but mostly her warmth, selflessness,
pride and generosity of spirit and love. Those who were lucky enough
to know Marlene will miss her wonderful smile and distinctive laugh.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas Ness; and three
children: son, Kyle Ness and spouse, Zoe (Mpls, MN), daughter,

THE FINAL ODEBOLT-ARTHUR
HIGH SCHOOL CLASS GRADUATES
May 16, 2009: Tomorrow will be a proud day as
the Class of 2009 graduates, but it will also be a sad day for those
of us who have graduated before them.
This is the last OAHS graduating class .. there will
never be another. Our high school with its proud tradition and
combined high school histories will be no more.
The move to whole-grade sharing with the Ida Grove/Battle
Creek School was inevitable and will, we hope, be advantageous for
our students, but many of us will mourn the passing of the fifty
plus years of OAHS.
From the Odebolt History Pages:
In December 1955 petitions for Odebolt-Arthur Community
School District were circulated, and after hearings, the matter was
brought to a vote May 29, 1956. A 98 per cent majority vote in favor
of the reorganization plan was the beginning of the Odebolt-Arthur
Community School District effective July 1, 1956. The new
Odebolt-Arthur Community School building represented a great step
forward in the education history of this community. An elementary
addition, new gymnasium and a new "library wing" were completed in
1958-59.
And so we have gone from Odebolt High School and Arthur High
School, to Odebolt-Arthur High School, and from now on our students
will graduate from O-A/BCIG High School. Our All School
Reunions will continue every three years ... and we will fondly
remember our days in high school in the town of Odebolt.

HAIL STRIKES ODEBOLT
From Curtis Wareham
We had a hailstorm that lasted about 20 minutes. I have never seen it
hail so hard for so long. It damned up water & caused flooding.
(Click the below photo to see it enlarged.)

From Deb Loger
Below are some photos taken
after the hailstorm that struck Odebolt on Wednesday afternoon, May 6,
2009. The storm lasted about 15 minutes with hailstones from pea
to walnut size. It caused significant damage to budding trees
and flowers. The streets were coated with ice and leaves and
many folks were out scooping the ice and debris from their sidewalks
and driveways. There was also damage to vehicles and roofs
probably took a hit as well.

it.

The first picture was taken

The second picture was on
Willow and Fourth. The hail was between 10-12 inches deep here.

Preschool will be like for them next fall at Odebolt-Arthur. They

Odebolt was visited last Wednesday (May 6) by a
spring storm which deposited three to four inches of hail. There
were reports of golf ball sized hail in the area, and there was
damage to some vehicles and homes. Even Highway 39 by Sparky's was
temporarily closed due to the flooding combination of hail and
rainfall. If it weren't for the green grass and budding trees, it
would look like a snowy scene from January.
