The Mayor Sez . . .
This week's "Mayor Sez..." article is dedicated to all of my readers.  It is with humble gratitude and thanks to all of you for your nice comments I received at the alumni banquet for the "Mayor Sez..." articles published each week.  A pleasant surprise was that, besides the locals, many comments were received from distant alumni who take The Chronicle or read the Odebolt web page.  The Chronicle appreciates the subscriptions and the City of Odebolt appreciates your continued interest and support.
R. J. Rex, Mayor of Odebolt

To the Odebolt Community:  We would like to thank the Odebolt community for such a great celebration this past weekend.  We found Odebolt to be a very special town.  The parade was wonderful and the activities were so much fun.,  After doing some ancestor research on the town we felt a need to see the town for ourselves so came to the celebration.  Even someone from out of state was made to feel welcome and got a feel of the great people there.  A big thank you to all of those who did so much work in planning the celebration and to those who attended.  You have a very special town there!  The ancestors would be proud.
Sincerely, Tim and Karen Reynolds, Windsor, CO

Dear Editor:  ...We walked some of the path when we were in Odebolt on Saturday for the parade and noticed the empty spaces were beyond the wooden bridge.  Parade was good. We think the Memorial Walk Park is very nice.  Most of all, the whole town was so pleasing to the eye with all the flowers and new paint.  The whole atmosphere was visitor-friendly.  Thanks to all the merchants who worked so hard.
Sincerely, Dorothy (Nagel) Rienfeld, Cherokee, IA

Thanks - There are so many people to thank that it is hard to begin.  The Odebolt Creek Days/125th celebration was wonderful.  The weather was perfect and the crowd was spectacular.  A celebration like that can not happen without the help of many, many individuals and organizations.  First of all, we need to thank all of those people who helped us set up for the event.  During the weekend, we need so many people to help work a shift or organize an event.  We greatly appreciate those individuals who were willing to give up some time to make everything happen.  We realize that this year was extra hard to give up some time but to those of you who did, thanks a bunch.  We also need to thank those people who helped with clean up on Sunday and Monday.  We are afraid to start listing names for fear that we would leave someone out.  So to everyone who helped in any way, please accept this as our deepest, heartfelt thanks.
Sincerely, Odebolt Development Corporation

The Mayor Sez. . .

What a great 125th Birthday party for Odebolt.  Starting with the gala ball (a packed house) a week before, the official Creek Days lead-off Alumni Banquet (a great success), and the after-glow party at the Community Center; it just kept getting better.  The pancake breakfast, basketball, carnival, flea market, food stands, car show, parade, the Odebolt Museum tour, the Pioneer Home, tractor show, and on and on...and please, I didn't mean to leave anyone out.
Aside from one or two old curmudgeons who wouldn't be happy no-matter-what, we have received nothing but raves about all of the above.
Hey, Ruth Kelly (Creek Day founder and class of '42), sorry I missed your rousing talk last Saturday a.m.!
Where can I stop and start thanking everyone involved for making our Creek Days a huge success?  I have said it over and over, and I'll say it again, it is both city and rural Odebolt People that make the difference.  Your City deeply appreciates your efforts and hard work.  We also received many compliments from our guests that stayed with us in the RV park.  We salute!
     R.J. Rex, Mayor
P.S.  One item deserves special mention - when the party is over, there is always the mess to clean up.  Thanks to the 4-H'ers, the ODC, the OCC, and all other volunteers for the great clean-up job!

"The agricultural industry near the communities of Arthur, Ida Grove, Odebolt and Wall Lake has been in transition for several years moving from being primarily livestock feeding to include more cash grain marketing", said FC General Manager Roger Koppin in his comments to those attending.
The previous track allowed for movement of 263,000 lb. rail cars, but with the upgrade it will  handle 286,000 lb. grain cars.  29 bridges along the track were either upgraded or replaced as part of the renovation.  The upgrade improves grain shipping capabilities for FC and the above mentioned communities.

Odebolt Community Center Close to Reaching Goal - Submitted by Jerry Reynolds, Rochester, Minnesota, Odebolt Class of 1952, Odebolt Community Center Committee Member.

Celebration of Odebolt's Quasquicentennial on June 14 - 16 is an appropriate time for alumni, residents, businesses, friends, and organizations to contribute to the Odebolt Community Center., Inc.  Whether it be one's first donation, an additional contribution, the Raffle, or a memorial, the celebration of the community's 125 year history is a fitting time for contributors to boost the OCC in reaching its goal - so close, yet not quite achieved.
Approximately $158,000 (79%) of the $200,000 goal has been contributed through donations, memorials, gifts, and grants - as well as through donated labor, equipment, and materials at cost. The number of individuals in and away from Odebolt who have contributed to the Center is significant and has made the project a reality even sooner than anticipated.  That the Center has already been the site for numerous small and large functions testifies not only to its function as the "center of the community," but to the promise it offers for the future of Odebolt.  A capstone of this achievement is the Quasquicentennial Gala Ball to be held at the Center on Jun 8 - an appropriate site for such a celebration.
An event which could upstage even the Gala Ball and highlight the Quasquicentennial itself would be an announcement that the OCC's goal of $200,000 has been achieved!
Through projects like the Community Center, Memorial Park Walk, Odebolt Library Addition, and many other achievements, Odebolt defines itself as a community-at-large" - not only to those who reside in town, but alumni and friends from afar who continue to take pride in their hometown, and are linked together through Odebolt and its history.  Generosity and sacrifice have no limits - geographic or economic or age - when defining Odebolt as a community taking pride in its past and its future.  The Community Center offers a tangible means presently for individuals to invest in and to revitalize their town.
A similar event in Odebolt's history, for example, was building the Odebolt Swimming Pool in the 50's - a challenge initially because of near-sightedness and skepticism:  "Why do we need a pool?"  "Contribute money and taxes to a pool?"  The swimming pool, however, soon became a reality because citizens had vision and pride.  And in fifty years, because of that ethic of civic-mindedness in Odebolt's history, the Odebolt Swimming Pool has served hundreds of thousands of youth and adults for the greater good of the town.
The Memorial Park is another case study of community pride; and on a smaller scale, the willingness of a group of adults and youth to paint recently the storefronts of vacant buildings to improve the appearance of the downtown reflects a spirit of revitalization.

_I came across something the other day that I felt warranted a space in my column - the word "misinformation".  It seems to travel the fastest and the furthest.  It is simply amazing how quickly incorrect information can breed and multiply when inaccurate sources are used.  Does the above sound familiar to anyone?
