Black Squirrels in Odebolt - The fact that there are black squirrels in Odebolt may not be new to people that live there, but the first time I saw them was the summer of 2003 when I saw two on West 2nd Street near the old location of the Odebolt Museum.   Over this Thanksgiving, I saw a black squirrel for the first time on North Main, where my mother's home is located.  I don't remember ever seeing them when I was growing up in Odebolt.
I ran a search on Google to find information on black squirrels in Iowa.  Apparently black squirrels were registered as a species as early as 1840 by a wildlife recorder passing through Kanesville, Iowa, which is now Council Bluffs. They can breed with Red and Grey squirrels and still produce black young.
When did black squirrels first reach Odebolt?  I'd be interested in knowing!

AREA STUDENTS

Clayton Neumann, a junior in mechanical engineering, a 2001 Odebolt-Arthur graduate and the son of Paul and Elaine Neumann of Odebolt, was one of six Iowa State University students who built and tested a proto-type anti-gravity blender for the NASA Reduced gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.
Neumann and three other students tested their prototype in a special NASA aircraft, the KC-135, known as the "Weightless wonder."
"The plane flew in a parabolic fashion.  We'd fly level at 25,000 feet, climb to 30,000 feet and then nosedive to 20,000 feet in 23 seconds.  During the dive you reach weightlessness and at the bottom of the dive you're at 1 Gs," said Neumann.  "It felt like when you're driving on a gravel road and when you go over the hill your stomach floats for a while.  We did this 32 times (or 12 minutes, 16 seconds) so after a while you get used to the feeling."

Odebolt artist Kate Brown has a ceramic sculpture titled Serenity on display  at the annual juried exhibit, Studies in Creativity at Iowa State University.  It will be on display through December 8th at The Gallery on the second floor of the Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way in Ames.  Call 515-292-1111 for viewing times between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce Meeting Minutes
from November 11 are now on-line.

100 YEARS AGO (1904) - Found on-line at the West Branch Times, West Branch, IA

Charlie Fong, who started in to make things hum with the steam laundry two weeks ago, has given up his job and returned to his home at Odebolt.  He says he will return in the spring and try it again. The work he did while here was quite satisfactory. It is to be hoped that someone will get hold of this property who will stay awhile as there is certainly a good opening for such an industry. Read about Charlie Fong's Chinese laundry in Odebolt at the Odebolt History Pages.

The Mayor Sez:

Last week was a bust….sat outside with some friends waiting for the eclipse to happen, however, we couldn’t see the heavenly event due to a heavy overcast.  Someone said 2007 will be the next eclipse.  Then, I tried to get a flu shot, but was always last in line and not enough to go around.  Have heard many say, “To heck with it, I’ll just go without”.
In closing, an eight year old was asked how the world would be different if people didn’t get married? The eight year old exclaimed, “There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there?”

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Coming to Bart Ogden Gym November 12 and 13.  This musical by Johnny Mercer and Gene dePaul is from a book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay.  It is about farmers/lumbermen in the Northeast in the 1860s. This musical is the story of how the seven Pontipee brothers go about finding wives, the competition they face, and the etiquette they must learn to win over the women they want.
