The
Mayor Sez…
A week ago our thoughts were about Thanksgiving and
having a nice holiday weekend. What a difference a week makes. Now, we are
trying not to think about Christmas, but subconsciously we know it is right
around the corner. Twenty-five days around the corner to be exact. We have
this weekend, two more weekends and WHAM, Christmas weekend. Why have I
written the above drivel?? Maybe just to remind myself (and some of you) that
it is later than we think. Merry Christmas………how does that sound?

The
Mayor Sez…
Veterans’ Day has come and gone, however, I think the
following is quite interesting? Someone passed it on to me.
“ In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the
anti-American sentiment and negativity, we should remember England’s Prime
Minister Tony Blair’s words during a recent interview. When asked by one of
his Parliament members why he believes so much in America, he said, “A simple
way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in…and how many
want out.” Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: Jesus
Christ and The American G.I. One died for your soul, the other for your
freedom.” I think this will give you something to think about.
City Hall will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23rd.
We wish you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving Holiday.

THANKSGIVING IN THE EARLY DAYS
THE SAC SUN, Vol. 2, No. 21, December 6, 1872
TO WALL LAKE.--Thanksgiving day was the coldest there has been this
season. Nevertheless we took a trip to Wall Lake [now known as Black
Hawk Lake] and beyond, to eat dinner with Wm. A. Robinson--section 16,
86, 36. Being a Yankee, he kept the day in becoming manner, crowning all
with New England's glory--the pumpkin pie. Mr. Robinson has a fine place,
and is improving it rapidly, especially by planting trees. His house
stands in a hollow square of maples, walnuts &c., eight rows deep,
sufficient to keep off the prairie blasts.
Between here and Wall Lake there is considerable rough
land, but around the lake it is better. A settlement of twelve families
surrounds the lake. Wm. Johnson, Joseph Parkinson, the Halpins
[Halpines?-illegible] and others are making for themselves fine farms and
comfortable homes. The soil, judging from the grass around the lake, must
be unusually rich.
The lake itself is a fine body of water, not so large
as Storm Lake, but of the same character. It embraces about 900 acres.
When it becomes surrounded with timber it will be a pleasant place for
summer boating and winter skating. It is filled with pickerel, pike and
other fish. We see no reason why there should not soon be a town built on
its banks, especially after the Des Moines Western Railroad is built along
its survey, which runs within a mile of the lake.
We intend to go down there next Summer, and prospect
more than we did this visit.
ODEBOLT REPORTER, VOL. IX. NO. 3., NOVEMBER 27, 1885 --
THANKSGIVING DAY was very generally and happily observed yesterday in
Odebolt and vicinity. Some went into the country to dine with friends, and
some from the country dined with their town friends and tripped the light
fantastic at the Firemen's ball in the evening.

Obituary: Warren Hanson, age 94, of Odebolt,
Iowa, died at his home on Monday, October 30, 2006, of pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday,
November 2, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the
direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Kathy Spracklin
officiated, with burial following in the Odebolt Cemetery.
Born May 10, 1912, in Soldier, Iowa, Warren Lowell
Hanson was the son of Wilmer and Victoria (Erickson) Hanson. When he was four
years old the family moved to a farm south of Arthur, Iowa. Warren attended
country school for two years, then moved to Odebolt where he attended the
public school. At age nine, the family moved to the farmhouse where Warren
died 85 years later.
Warren was brought up in the Odebolt Swedish Mission
Covenant Church where the service was spoken in Swedish. To attend public
school, Warren and his sister Dorothy would ride the two miles in a cart
behind a pony and deliver quarts of milk for ten cents at houses before
school. They would leave the pony at a stable at the church during school.
Warren graduated from Odebolt High School in 1930, and one month later his
mother died of appendicitis. During the Great Depression, Warren and his
father would drive a team of horses and wagon five miles north to hand saw
cottonwood trees for heat in the farmhouse.
On May 22, 1937, Warren was united in marriage to
Arleen Fulton at Sioux City, Iowa. To this union, two sons and two daughters
were born. The family was very active in the Odebolt Methodist Church. Warren
and Arleen were very supportive of their children in school academics, music,
and sports. They financially supported all four children in college.
Warren milked Guernsey cows until the 1960's and made
all the farming decisions until his death. For extra income he shelled corn,
combined oats, and baled hay for others.
Warren was known for cooking oatmeal with raisins,
serving popcorn he grew commercially, and freezing homemade ice cream made
with milk from his Guernsey cows. Warren and Arleen were active square dancers
in the 1950's and '60's. They had two 1970's snowmobiles which took them to
neighbors' homes for games of "500" cards. They spent 22 years wintering in
Scottsdale and Mesa, Arizona, where they had many dear friends.
Warren served as trustee and clerk of Richland Township
in the 1960's. Warren and Arleen were like "two peas in a pod." They really
loved their family and friends, worked hard, and enjoyed traveling the world.
Survivors include four children and their spouses,
Richard Hanson and Suan Guess-Hanson of Bloomington, IL, Jean and Ronald Lee
of Manhattan, KS, Betty and Terry Collins of Eldora, and Robert and Zava
Hanson of Hays, KS; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Dorothy Klemesrud of Indianapolis, IN.
He was preceded by his parents and his wife of 67
years, Arleen.

The
Mayor Sez...
Halloween has come and gone, we are back to Central
Standard Time, and it's November. Next Tuesday is election day, so, at least,
we won't have to watch the political candidates 'sling any more mud' at each
other. The important thing is that we exercise our given right to vote.
Thanks to all that have expressed their concern over my
recent surgery. I appreciate it.
Note: if you have an upcoming community event that you would like me to
mention, please let me know.

DOT Lets Highway 175 Project in Ida and Sac counties—The
Iowa Department of Transportation let two projects Sept. 19 for the work on
Iowa Highway 175 in Ida and Sac counties. The resurfacing project from the
corporate limits of Ida Grove east to the Sac County line has a late start
date of April 2, 2007, and the contractor has 130 working days to complete the
project.
The overlay project from the Ida County line east to
west of the west junction of U.S. Highway 71 has a late start of April 16,
2007, with 95 working days to complete the project.
The contractor will be allowed to detour traffic for 45
working days where traffic will be routed back into Odebolt on Highway 39
using Detours A and B. There will be an additional 15 days that the traffic
will be detoured using Detour C where traffic does not get routed through
Odebolt while the intersection of Highways 39 and 175 is being constructed. It
is anticipated that work will be completed by mid-September; however, there
are many things including weather that will affect when work can be completed.
The detour routes are as follows:
Detour A – at Arthur traffic will be routed south on M31 to D59, D59 east to
Highway 39, then north into Odebolt.
Detour B – South from Odebolt on Highway 39, D59 east to M50, then north on
M50 to Highway 175/71.
Detour C – Traffic will be routed south from Arthur on M31, east on D59 to
M50, then north to Highway 175/71.
A preconstruction meeting will be held in the early
spring for each of these projects and a press release will be sent out prior
to work beginning.
