Hike died of injuries suffered when his patrol vehicle struck and detonated an IED near Bermel in eastern Afghanistan.  He was on a resupply mission to Combat Outpost Malekshav, a remote base less than three miles from the Pakistani border.
He was born July 21, 1981, in Carroll, Iowa, and attended schools in Odebolt, Lake View, Wall Lake, and Sac City where he graduated in 2000.

Mass of the Christian Burial was held at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Father James McCormick as Celebrant. Visitation was held at 9:00 A.M. on Friday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there was a Christian Wake Service held by Holy Spirit Parish. SANTA & MRS. SANTA'S VISIT A SUCCESS
In spite of the icy winter weather, the party held Saturday, December 1st for Odebolt's children went off quite well and was well attended, although kids from neighboring towns couldn't make it due to road conditions.  The jolly couple arrived by fire truck while everyone awaited indoors at the Odebolt Community Center, out of the weather. Each child received a bag of goodies and a box of crackerjack. Lots of cookies and cocoa were had by all, including Mr. & Mrs. Santa. Everyone who sat on Santa's lap had their photo taken. Even Mr. & Mrs. Mayor got to sit on Santa's lap!.
Thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this all possible. From the response we received, we will do it again next year.

Odebolt girls play Danbury in Odebolt

Before the 1930 school building was constructed there was no gymnasium, and the girls' basketball team practiced and played games outside on the south side of the 1900 building. The girls traveled by train to "away" games, played the game and caught the next train to Odebolt. Here's the write-up of the girls' 1914 autumn games from the 1915 Aurora, the first yearbook of Odebolt High School:

The Basketball Season

The 1915 Basketball team was composed largely of new players and some of these had never played the game before. A great deal of interest was taken by the team to have strong material as they wished to keep up the excellent record of the school. The team was greatly benefited by the distinguished coaching of Principal Core. Although the result of the work of this year's team has not been quite as good as the work of the team last year, the spirit and endeavor put forth could not have been better.
Early in the season two games were lost to Danbury but the showing was good considering the amount of practice of the new team against the Danbury team, as the latter was composed of old players. The last game with the above mentioned team was the most exciting and hard fought game of the season. Battle Creek, Sloan, and Lake View fell easy preys but the game with Auburn was not so easily won. It was one of the fastest games of the year.
Captain Eleanor Groman will end her basketball career with the school this year. Her exceptional skill and accuracy in throwing baskets marks her as a star forward. She will be long remembered as such, especially by this season's teammates.
Lulu Hewitt also played forward this year. Her fine team work was one of her distinguishing features, also her self control in playing had a great deal to do with this season's success. She will make splendid material to start next year's team.
Ida Level played her first year in basketball this season. She has made a brilliant success as jumping center. She is tall and very quick which are excellent qualities for a player.
Marion Koehler, playing side center, is known for her clever field work. Although she is small her dexterity overcomes this handicap.
Louis Steuckradt, known for her splendid "sticking" qualities has made a strong guard for the team and has the promise of being a star player.
Minnie Reuber the other guard, has the advantage of being tall as well as a good player. There were very few forwards that could do much when Minnie was playing guard.
Agnes Oursler, our substitute, played a few minutes in both the Danbury and Sloan games. Judging from the way she played she will not have to remain as substitute very long.
The team is looking forward to further great success this spring. Although the lack of a gymnasium handicapped the team in getting the necessary practice thru the winter months, the members of the team look forward with great enthusiasm, determined to bring this season's work to a successful ending. [Since the yearbook went to print on March 1, a record of the spring season is not included.]

The Mayor Sez…

It appears as though we are on track to get the Highway 20 4-lane project underway. It is my understanding that the Iowa DOT has put the project as the #1 priority road project in the state. We shall see. The DOT commission reports the only grading at this time in the state is being done on Hwy. 20 for the Webster/Calhoun County stretch.
Here is the “hooker”. The Iowa Legislature is looking for ways to fund the Hwy. 20 project and other road construction projects around the state by raising the gas tax, raising license plate costs on motor vehicles, especially pickup trucks, and some other revenue raising tactics. Cut me some slack! Where did they get the money to grade and pave 4 lane highways all across, up and down, in eastern Iowa?? I will say this, “A penny or two more for fuel tax can raise millions and everyone pays, even out-of-state vehicles, including trucks, passing thru. As far as tampering with our license fees for vehicles, let’s take a look at our neighboring State of Minnesota. The most anyone pays on any motor vehicle license is a maximum of around $80.00 and Minnesota appears to have a very good 4-lane highway system. Maybe our legislative study committee on the above matter should talk to our neighbors to the north.

The Mayor Sez…
I don’t know about anyone else, but I was sure happy to get the hour back from day-light savings. I don’t like getting out of bed when it’s still dark outside. Weather for the rest of Nov. looks good and with the price of oil and gas we need to hope for warmer winter.
The cost of living in our homes has become astronomical and we need to save on energy costs the best we can. One way to do that is to keep the thermostat turned down and get some electric space heaters in the lived in part of your home and use electric blankets for your bedrooms. You will save dollars on heating costs!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

When the pilgrims invited their kind neighbors to help them celebrate their first bountiful harvest in the new land, they probably never imagined the long-lasting impact that early dinner would have! We'd like to join our friends and neighbors in celebrating that very spirit of peace, freedom and harmony that makes this tradition so special today. Our best Thanksgiving greetings to one and all.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Here are two recipes from a very old cookbook that belonged to our maternal grandmother, Anna Anderson Carlson (1884-1967). She and our grandfather, Sigurd Carlson, married in 1911 and farmed near Odebolt most of their lives.
When this cookbook was written, the main course for Thanksgiving may have been strutting around in the farm yard until just before the holiday, and before the farm wife could roast the turkey or chicken, she had to catch it, arrange for it to meet its demise (probably by her own hand), gut it and pluck its feathers. She roasted the bird in a large wood- or coal-fired cookstove without benefit of a temperature gauge; she had to judge the oven temperature by how it felt on her hand when she opened the oven door.
She churned her own butter from cream from the farm's milk cows, and used the butter to baste the bird and make the dressing. The dressing, of course, was made from her homemade bread; the egg was gathered from her chicken house; she went to her root cellar for the onion from last summer's garden.
She used a cast iron grinder clamped to the kitchen counter or table to manually grind the heart, liver, gizzard, onion, pork and allspice for the dressing. The pork would have come from one of the farm's hogs butchered on site.
Our grandmother's language for body parts was very modest; she would never use the word "breast" for the front part of a bird or any other living thing. Thighs and legs were also problematic. However, most women of that era had been taught by their mothers how to roast poultry, and wouldn't need a recipe.
Judging by the pristine condition of this page in the cookbook, Grandma may not have even read the offending words for those body parts.

Roast Poultry
After poultry is cleaned and washed inside and out with cold water, fill inside with dressing. Have at least a yard of fine twine in trussing needle. Turn wings across back so that pinions touch. Run needle through thick part of wing under bone, through body and wing on other side; return in same way, but passing needle in over bone, tie firmly, leaving several inches of twine. Press legs up against body, run needle through thigh, body and second thigh; return, going round bone in same way; tie firmly. Run needle through ends of legs, return, passing needle through rump; if opening is badly torn, one or two stitches may be needed; or if steel skewers are used put one through wings of fowl and other through opposite thigh. Then wind twine in figure eight from one handle of skewer to other. Rub all over with soft butter and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place on rack in roasting pan and put into very hot oven. Make basting mixture with 1/2 cupe each of butter and water; keep hot and baste every 10 or 15 minutes. Roast 3 hours for 8 pound turkey, 1 to 2 hours for chicken and ducks. Keep oven very hot. If bird is very large and heavy, cover breasts and legs with several thicknesses of paper to keep from burning.

Dressing
Soak a loaf of stale bread about five minutes in cold water and press out all water. Mix one egg, 1 tablespoon of poultry seasoning, or sage, salt and pepper. Cook heart, liver, and gizzard until done. Put through meat grinder with one big onion and one pound of fresh pork from the fat from top of loin, and a few whole allspice. Mix all together.

The Mayor Sez ...
It saddened me to see the last Trojan football game played last Friday night. Many communities fight to their last breath to keep their high school and school identities in their respective communities but, alas, it wasn't meant to be for O-A. To keep everything in perspective and to keep my critics at bay, I must say that all of the above is this old diehard's humble opinion only!
Maybe some future City Council will vote to change our City's name as well. That is conjecture too!
City Council election is next Tuesday, the 6th of November.
Daylight savings goes off at midnight, November 3rd. Remember to set your clocks "back".

Jake Wulf to Share Invention on Nov. 2 Ellen DeGeneres TV Show--(photo)
Jake Wulf, 9, a fourth-grader at Odebolt-Arthur Elementary School in Odebolt, Iowa, will make his national television debut, thanks to an invention of his that makes life easier for people who forget to lower the toilet seat after going to the bathroom and the female family members with whom they live.
Wulf, son of Jason and Beth Wulf, has been chosen to share his University of Iowa Invent Iowa invention -- The Privy Prop -- on the Friday, Nov. 2 Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Wulf's invention, a pedal-operated device that lifts a toilet seat when a person puts his or her foot on it, was inspired by his mom's annoyance "because I was forgetting to put the toilet seat up or down."
"I got the idea when I went to my doctor's office and saw a trash can that had a pedal that put the lid up and down," Wulf said. The Privy Prop was born.
During the research phase, Wulf said he discovered that with other, similar products, people still had to touch the seat because the handles were still really close to the seat, making them less sanitary.
"With my Privy Prop, you don't have to put your hands on any germs," Wulf said. "It's easy to install, it's fun, it's fast and it keeps moms happy."
Wulf was one of 356 inventors and co-inventors of 272 inventions representing cities and towns across Iowa and eastern Illinois who demonstrated his invention at the 2007 Invent Iowa State Convention in Ames in April. He was also one of 11 inventors whose invention was chosen to be shared at the UI exhibit area at the 2007 Iowa State Fair in August.
The Invention Convention, sponsored by the UI College of Education's Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development and the UI and Iowa State University Colleges of Engineering, alternates between the UI and ISU campuses each year. This is the 20th year the event has been organized.

1910 Photo of First Street
This is a 1910 photo of the south side of First Street, undoubtedly taken from one of the grain elevators across the street. You'll probably recognize the angled building at the right, which is the current home of the Odebolt Museum, but all other buildings on First Street are gone.
In the background at the right, the roof of the old 1900 school house towers above the trees. On the horizon you can see the elm trees lining one of the roads through Fairview Farm, locally known as the Adams Ranch.
Do you recognize any of the buildings on Second Street and Main Street? Some of them still exist.
