THE ODEBOLT NEWS. VOL. II. NO.32. OCTOBER 21, 1915
CEMETERY FENCE
The new iron fence which is being put up at the cemetery is
all placed on the east side and also on the south side to the Catholic
Cemetery. The main gate has not yet been placed and it may be
necessary to have a meeting of those interested before it does go up,
as the new gate bears the inscription "Fair View Cemetery" instead of
"Odebolt Cemetery," and it is reported that there has been objection
to this change of name without a referendum decision.
WOULD REPLACE HAMILTON
It is reported once again that a movement is being
fostered for the purpose of having Hamilton Park replaced by a more
modern layout of some character which will be more imposing and
handsome than the present little park at the intersection of First,
Second and Main streets now is. The plan in view is said to comprise a
scheme of decoration with shade trees, a circle of neat appearance and
other attractions. This idea will be presented to the public and the
council for action in the near future--probably by the committee which
investigated sidewalks and electroliers in Chicago and suburbs.

Morning class and afternoon class of Odebolt-Arthur Pre-K were
photographed during their monthly visit to the Odebolt Public Library
to be entertained at story time. Each month they are able to check out
one book due back at their next visit. The children’s attention span
grows over the school year, from reading very short simple stories to
lengthy stories in May. It is a pleasure for the library staff to see
this change over the course of the school year.
OBITUARY
RICHARD TAYLOR
Richard C. "Dick" Taylor, 75, prominent retired banker
and financial adviser, passed away at his home on Nov. 7, 2008,
following a brief illness.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Faith Lutheran
Church in Sioux City, with Pastor Ralph Shorey officiating. Burial was
at Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted.
Dick was born on April 16, 1933, to Frederick and
Pauline Taylor on a farm near Odebolt, Iowa. He graduated from Odebolt
High School in May 1951. He was very proud to have been a lineman on
the undefeated Odebolt Trojan football teams of 1949 and 1950. He also
served as president of Odebolt High's Future Farmers of America.
On July 26, 1953, Dick married Jeannette L. Dierenfeld
of Wall Lake, Iowa. They farmed near Odebolt until he was drafted. He
served in the Army of the Occupation from January 1954 through December
1955, including nine months of service in Germany, and attained the
rank of corporal.
After his discharge, Dick returned to Iowa. He began
his banking career with Kiron State Bank in 1956, and then served as a
bank examiner for the Iowa Banking Department. Dick joined First
National Bank in Sioux City in April 1961, advancing to roles of
increasing responsibility until his election to president in 1973, a
position he held until his retirement in 1984. During his tenure, Dick
continued to build his expertise. He graduated from the School of
Banking at the University of Wisconsin and completed Harvard
University's Senior Bank Officers School. He also oversaw the
construction of a new bank, which is in use today. In working with the
architect and the Board of Directors, he was committed not only to
modernizing the facility (becoming, for example, the first bank in
Sioux City to install ATM machines) but also to preserving historically
significant features of the old building, including its distinctive
limestone pillars. After retiring from the bank, Dick embarked on a
second career. He joined Piper Jaffray as a financial adviser and was
promoted to assistant manager of the Sioux City office prior to his
final retirement in the early 1990s.
Dick was not only an astute businessman, but was
actively involved in giving back to the community he loved. He was
president of the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce and Siouxland Banker's
Association and served on the boards of the Industrial Development
Council, Tax Research Conference, Iowa Small Business Advisory Council,
YMCA and Briar Cliff College. He also was on the Industrial
Administration Advisory Council of Iowa State University.
Dick made it a point to balance work with fun and
family. He loved sports, especially golf. He not only served on the
Board of the Sioux City Country Club, but also excelled at the game,
sinking five holes-in-one and earning many first-place finishes in golf
tournaments. He had many happy times with his golfing buddies.
Above all, Dick and Jeannette loved family gatherings.
They particularly enjoyed the times they could spend with their four
children and five grandchildren. For years, their goal was to overcome
busy schedules and get everyone together for a family vacation. That
goal was met twice when they all met at the Wisconsin Dells to
celebrate Dick and Jeannette's 50th and 55th wedding anniversaries.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jeannette; daughter and
son-in-law, LuAnn and Steve Johnson of Rochester, Minn.; son and
daughter-in-law, Steve and Mary Taylor of Denver, Colo.; daughter,
Kimberly McGarry of Sioux City; son, Scott Taylor of Omaha, Neb.; five
grandchildren, Karissa and Stephanie Johnson, Evyn and Sydney Taylor
and Jason Taylor; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Diane Taylor of
Austin, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Dan and Jane Snyder of
Odebolt, Iowa; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Paula
Catherine Taylor.
Memorials may be directed to the Taylor family, Hospice
of Siouxland, Faith Lutheran Church or a charity of choice.

For You!
FAVORITE RECIPES of the
Odebolt Community
This cookbook is a collection of more than 800 recipes gathered and
edited by the women of Circle No. 4, St. Martin's Church. It was
probably printed sometime in the 1960's by the Odebolt Chronicle. The
ladies acknowledged "the kindness and helpfulness of Paul Wagner and
his whole Chronicle staff." As you can see, I was intrigued by the
easy marshmallow desserts. I invite you to try them during the
holidays!
Heavenly Hash
Dissolve 36 marshmallows in 1 cup milk in double boiler. Cool. Whip 2
cups cream and add one 9 ounce can crushed pineapple, drained, 1/2 cup
maraschino cherries and 1/2 cup nuts. Mix with the marshmallow mixture
and put in large cake pan that has been lined with crushed vanilla
wafers. Sprinkle more crushed wafers on top. Chill. Serves 15.
Variations of the above recipe appear in the pie section. They're
similar to nesselrode pie, and call for either a graham cracker crust
or a baked pie shell. You'd probably want to cool the milk and
marshmallow mixture before folding in the whipped cream. You could use
harvest-colored fruits for Thanksgiving, and red and green cherries
for a Christmas pie.
Marshmallow Pie
1 scant cup milk, 30 marshmallows (dissolve in hot milk). Fold 1 cup
whipped cream into marshmallow mixture and add chocolate chips, nuts,
pineapple, cherries, strawberries or dates. Place in baked pie shell
and cool.
Here's one for ice cream fanatics like me. Again, it's probably
best to cool the hot mixture before adding the whipped cream. Be
creative and add flavor and color in keeping with the holiday you're
celebrating.
Marshmallow Ice Cream
16 marshmallows, 1 cup milk, 1 cup whipping cream.
Whip cream until thick. Heat milk and add marshmallows. When dissolved
add whipped cream. Put in tray and freeze and stir now and then. (This
can be put in a hand freezer).
What to do with extra fresh cranberries? Here's an idea from the
cookbook---maybe these could substitute for today's snackfood, dried
cranberries. They could even make an appearance in your marshmallow
dessert.
Candied Cranberries
Put one cup crushed cranberries into a shallow buttered dish and cover
with 1-1/4 cups sugar. Bake one hour in a slow oven, tossing lightly
with a fork occasionally. A dash of your favorite spice may be added.

thank Bill Dreessen for heading up this project and a very big thank you
to all of his helpers. He is going to let me know who you all are.
Mid American Energy has notified me that they will be
clearing tree limbs from their electric facilities within the City in the
near future. All affected properties will be notified by mail at least 14

And last, but not least, a big thank you for Mrs.

Happy Thanksgiving!
When the pilgrims invited their kind neighbors to help them celebrate
their first bountiful harvest in the new land, they probably never
imagined the long-lasting impact that early dinner would have! We'd like
to join our friends and neighbors in celebrating that very spirit of
peace, freedom and harmony that makes this tradition so special today. Our
best Thanksgiving greetings to one and all.

THE CHRONICLE. VOL. 9. NO. 25,
OCTOBER 31, 1895.
G. A. Eckstrom, of Wheeler township, had a narrow escape from being
robbed one evening last week. While returning home from town where he
had sold a load of hogs, he was attacked on the road just north of
Wheeler's south ranch by a man with a gun in hand. The robber after
halting Mr. Eckstrom, attempted to climb into the wagon, but in doing
so slipped and partially fell. Mr. Eckstrom immediately took advantage
of the opportunity and dealt his foeman a vicious blow that sent him
from the wagon. Having at the same time urged the horses to go, he
dropped to the bottom of the box and was soon carried out of danger.

Two Soldiers - Two Wars
John E. Kuhl of Odebolt joined the army in
1918 during World War I and for a time was stationed at Jefferson
Barracks south of St. Louis, Missouri. M. D. Fox, a retired pioneer
farmer, was a neighbor to John Kuhl’s parents. Louise Kuhl, who lived
with her parents, wrote to her brother frequently. In one letter she
told him, “Mr. Fox was asking all about you the other evening and
where you were stationed. I told him you were still at the Jefferson
Barracks and he said that certainly was a pretty place around there.
He said when he was a soldier in the Civil War he was there for a
couple of months. He said he thought it was out about nine miles from
the city.”
Read the Letter
The Kuhl family lived on East First Street, and the Fox
home was on the west side of Park Street, the second house south of
the corner of Park Street and East Third Street.
According to a Chronicle story prior to his 95th birthday in 1937, Mr.
Fox was reading and enjoying Margaret Mitchell’s epic novel about the
Civil War, “Gone with the Wind”, which had been published in 1936.

The
Mayor Sez…
I did not put a blurb in about the National
election last week due to the fact that I might get accused of swinging
the election one way or another. Ha Ha!! At this writing (Oct 30th) the
election hasn’t happened yet, however, when you read this it will be over.
No more TV interruptions—Hurrah! Congratulations to the winners. May the
losers cry in their beer. In this writer’s opinion whoever is the next
President, he will have a magnanimous task of putting the country back in
order. Let us hope he and his administration provide the leadership to do
just that.
Government’s views of the economy could be summed up in
a few short phrases: “If it moves, tax it, if it keeps moving, regulate
it, and if it stops moving, subsidize it!”…Ronald Reagan.
