The Mayor Sez ...
Hey, when you get time go out to the cemetery and see the new Veterans Memorial Monument. It will be viewed
with pride by many generations to come.
Halloween trick or treat will be THURSDAY, Oct 30th (not the 31st due to a local football game) from 5 to 7
in the evening, so turn on your porch light and have fun viewing our kids in their costumes. When we were kids we may have been guilty
of more tricks then the treats (these days I am sure it is just the opposite! Ahem!). Have a spook-full of fun!

Con-Man Harold Hill Spotted in Ohio
Professor Harold Hill, renowned con-man and purveyor (peddler) of band instruments, was
rumored to have been in the train station in Toledo, Ohio. Charlie Cowell, ethical saleman, claims to have heard of the
presence of Mr. Hill in the Toledo depot and has this to say about him. "He's giving every salesman a black eye! After
he's worked a town over, the next salesman to arrive gets automatically tarred and feathered and rode out to the city limits
on a rail."
Citizens of Odebolt and Arthur and surrounding communities need to be on the outlook for this
questionable character.
Locals already watching for Mr. Hill are: Barbara Votrobeck and Judy Jepsen, co-directors of
The Music Man; Linda Johnson, director of the townspeople and others in the chorus; Rick Votrobeck, set designer; and
Cinda Bettin, costumer.
Don't miss out. Buy your tickets now from cast members to see the O-A production of
Meredith Willson's The Music Man on November 14 & 15 in the Bart Ogden Gym!
Costumes needed for School Play - The OA cast and crew of "The Music Man" need the community's
help. Please search your closets' deepest darkest corners and find: long gathered skirts, bloomers,
knickers, cummerbunds, plaid suits, windowpane check pants or suits, shawls, short bolero jackets, "Gunny
Sax" dresses, women's hats, men's bowler hats, blouses with mutton sleeves, etc.
Music Man is set in turn of the century time period. If you have seen the play, you

The Mayor Sez...
You aren’t going to
believe this, but guess what?? It’s the “spooktacular”
Oct. 25th Hunters’ Lunch again at the Odebolt
Methodist Church. A great lunch and lots of baked goodies
for sale by the Odebolt Youth Fellowship, so, don’t miss
it; 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Mark your calendar.
Thanks to the Odebolt Chamber for
the great pancake brunch at the Community Hall last Sunday.
If you missed it, it was great!
Remember not to rake leaves into
the streets as it does clog up our drainage system. Thank
you. If at all possible try to get your leaves hauled to the
city dump and we’ll take care of them from there.
Speaking of raking leaves, kudos
again this year to Carol Raasch and her Nat’l. Honor
Society kids. Last Wed., after the breakfast induction
ceremony for the new members, they volunteered to rake
leaves for those that can’t do it for one reason, or
another, and also did a pick-up and clean-up at the Memorial
Walk Park. Carol coordinated with Joan at city hall and at 8
a.m. away they went to do their community service. Hats off
to you kids!!!
Last, but not least, don’t forget
to turn the clock back Sat. night before you retire for the
evening. (We will get that extra hour back that we lost last
Spring and if you are like me you need every extra hour you
can get!)

Search Warrant uncovers Meth Lab in Odebolt
In the early morning hours of Tuesday Oct. 14th while on routine patrol Chief Bruce Henderson , of
the Odebolt Police Department, noticed a strong acid smell while driving down South Locust St. After further investigation it was
determined that the acid smell was coming from the Jerry and Karmon Loggins residence, 308 S. Locust St.
Chief Henderson did obtain a search warrant for the residence and surrounding property at 308 S.
Locust St. The warrant was served by the Odebolt Police Dept., the Sac Co. Sheriff Dept. and the Iowa DNE Clandestine
Laboratory Emergency Response Team.
After a search of the residence by the Response Team the items found were all the components and
ingredients used in a meth lab. These items were seized along with some white powder and a small amount of cash.
Jerry and Karmon Loggins were arrested and transported to the Sac Co. Jail where they remain
in custody charged with several felony drug charges.
Chief Bruce Henderson wishes to commend the help and response of the Sac Co. Sheriff
Dept., the Iowa DNE Response Team, the Iowa State Patrol and the Sac Co. Ambulance crew.
This further emphasizes the city's commitment to crack down on illegal drug activity.
Mayor Ron Rex is quoted as saying " If you want to mess with drugs then stay away from Odebolt."

The Mayor Sez...
I recently returned from the Iowa League of Cities Annual Conference. As I told the city
council at our regular meeting, it gave me a good feeling to know that hearing the problems of other cities, especially our size (pop. 1000-1500), the
City of Odebolt is in pretty good shape.
Yes, due to the legislature's passing of the idiotic "reinvention bill" we will be receiving less state
apportionment, however, I honestly believe that with a few budget adjustments, we will be OK. I really don't think it will be necessary to
cut too much in any particular department. I will soon be asking department heads and city entities what they may think can be cut and by
how much. Our forefathers lived by their budgets (contrary to State and Federal governments) and your current administration is bound to
live by theirs. No one in government in good consciousness should spend more than they take in (that old adage seems to have gone awry in
State and Federal government); yet, our elected state legislators say, "you cities need to have more fiscal responsibility." I
guess we need to ask them to practice what they preach!

Friends of the Library Minutes - (summary) - The meeting was brought to order by President Bev Einspahr. The nominating
committee presented the slate of candidates for election: President Donna Ekstrom, Vice-President Phyllis Kies, Secretary Janice
Christian, and Treasurer Mary Jeanne Thompson. This slate of officers was unanimously accepted.
Librarian Donarae Cleveland stated that since the arrival of the new computer many children are coming to play
games and the room is short a chair. The Friends approved purchase of a new chair for the computer room to match those already
there. Mary Jeanne will donate a paper towel dispenser for the kitchen and Friends will supply towels for a year for the
kitchen.
A 500 card party will be held on Wednesday, October 29 at 1:15 with dessert. The next meeting will be
January 12, 2004. - Donna Ekstrom, Secretary.
Hayride! - On October 5th, young couples and singles of First Presbyterian Church, Odebolt, had a hayride.
People from both the church and the community attended. The children enjoyed the ride then returned and roasted marshmallows for
s'mores, enjoyed bars, hot chocolate and Kool-Aid. It was a nice turnout with 20 adults and 30 children.
ONRC Auxiliary Bazaar - The Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center Auxiliary Bazaar was held Saturday, October 4, 2003
at St. Martin's Parish Hall. Thanks to the many donors and volunteers it was another successful year. Winners were:
Quilt - Daisy Thayer, Afghan, Marilyn Stork; Fall arrangement door prize, Phyllis Franken. Door prizes were awarded every half-hour
to various people. Donations and cash donations were received from many Odebolt businesses and people in the community as well as
from Schaller, Arthur, Kiron and Ida Grove businesses.
Oct 9 - Odebolt Police Dept. Receives Grant

Policy that the Odebolt Police Depts. application for the 2003 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program
has been selected for funding.

ODEBOLT CELEBRATES 2 YEARS ON THE INTERNET!
October 16, 2003 marks the second anniversary of www.odebolt.net. The web site has developed into an in-depth
"on-line" brochure for the town of Odebolt.
The front page of the site contains a brief introduction, Odebolt's temperature & weather, a "Google"
search engine, and links of interest, including a link to a guestbook and the Odebolt History Pages web site.
From the front page you can access main sections of odebolt.net, including Community, Business, Projects,
Attractions, Calendar, News, Links and a site index. The main sections branch off to other pages. For example, "Community" contains
information on city offices, community organizations, schools, churches, health services, recreation & leisure, and senior services. Links
lead to City Council minutes, and pages on our First Responders, Library, Museum, Community Center, an Odebolt Photo Album, and location maps.
The "Projects" section contains links to the Veterans Memorial Monument, with a listing of all local
people who served in the military from 1900 to 2000. This page in particular did a great deal to inform and reach
"out-of-towners" about the project. "Projects" also links to the Community Center page, which contains a history,
progress updates, rental rates, and link to a donation pledge card. The Memorial Walk Park page has RV Park registration information, and
a link to a Memorial Walk Plaques order form.
Perhaps the most popular sections of odebolt.net are the "Calendar", and the "News",
which are updated frequently. Organizations and individuals can email news and upcoming events to
for posting. News is edited from The Chronicle on a weekly basis. The
News page contains subscription rates for The Chronicle and often runs Chronicle and other Odebolt business ads.
The web site has received over 16,000 "hits", or visits, since its inception, an average
of 25 to 40 hits per day. After the monthly "Odebolt.net Newsletter" is emailed, hits increase to an average of 70 to 80
per day. Statistics available to the web master show that about half of the hits come from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in
the Sac, Ida and Crawford County area. However, visitors also come from throughout the United States and the world. In
September there were visits from the Netherlands, Canada, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Australia,
Germany, Belgium, Israel, Japan, Denmark, Brazil, Finland, Fiji, New Zealand, Iceland, Peru, Romania, France, Italy, Estonia, the
Czech Republic and Norway, as well as from all over the good ol' U.S.A.
Since the beginning of the war in Iraq, there has been an increase in hits coming in from members of
the U.S. military services, as indicated by .mil endings of ISP addresses. College students are checking on "home"
too, as evidenced by the .edu endings of ISP addresses. We often receive email from former residents and alumni; they enjoy
catching up on happenings in their hometown. Many, including former O-A exchange students, have left messages in the 38-page
guestbook.
Our town is unique - it is the only "Odebolt" on the World Wide Web. If you type
"Odebolt" into a search engine, it will lead directly to the web site. Our home on the Internet provides us an
opportunity to show the world our pride in Odebolt.
So - if you haven't yet explored www.odebolt.net, try it! And while you're at it,
visit "The Odebolt History Pages",
sponsored by the Odebolt Historical Museum Association. The site, by the "Girvan sisters", Bonnie and Barb,
contains 265 web pages of history so far. If you know people who don't have Internet access, tell them to view either
web site by using public library computers.
Thanks to Odebolt City Council and City officials for help in development of the
web site, to digital photographers Chuck Hanson and Daryl Cleveland, and to the many organizations and individuals
who have contributed. Special thanks to the Odebolt businesses that sponsor odebolt.net by listing on the Business
Directory page, and "page sponsors" whose business ads appear at the bottom of many pages. Without all
of you, Odebolt would not have its "home on the net".

The Mayor Sez...
Let me begin this week's "Mayor Sez..." by commending the voters of our school district (and the rest of the
voters of Sac County) by your overwhelming vote in support of the local option sales tax for our schools. For the 14 of you that voted against
it, well, let me just say that a lot of us are glad there were just 14 of you. (It was your privilege to vote against it.)
I want to add a little more on the Riverboat Gambling issue. I was talking with the Mayor of Spencer about their
upcoming referendum on the gambling issue and I said, "But, Cleber (Cleber Meyer, mayor of Spencer), you don't even have a lake!"
Cleber's reply was, "Well, we will just have to dig one!" A footnote to that is that Cleber says the vote is a "shoo-in."

The Mayor Sez...
Riverboat gambling in Sac County??? State Senator Steve Kettering has been quoted in several news items as to exploring
the possibility of riverboat gambling in Sac County. The proposed site of the casino would be on Hallett's pit. The Sac County Supervisors
have had some discussion on the subject, a committee from Wall Lake is being formed, and Shirley Phillips, our SETD Executive Director, is talking to
Wes Ebreche, President of the Iowa Gaming Association.
Please realize that all of the above is just talk, no more, no less. The issue, if it would get that far, would
ultimately have to be voted on by the voters of Sac County. Needless to say, lines are already being drawn by those that are for and by those
that are against.

Excerpt taken from "From the Superintendent's
Desk", by Supt. Dennis L. Johnson
The third Friday in September has now passed and
marked the official day on which school enrollments were to be
calculated. Odebolt-Arthur's official enrollment for the 2003-2004
school year stands at 407.4 students, which is a decline of 24.7 students from
the same date one year ago...
Unofficially, the number of students actually
sitting in desks at OA that day was 391, which is broken down into
elementary - 149, middle school - 105, and high school - 137. These
numbers are a clear example of a major issue facing the district at this
time...
It is important to be aware that it is this
official enrollment [that] for the most part dictates how much money
school districts will have to operate. .... Starting next year,
the budget guarantee is going into a phase-out process and a declining
enrollment will mean less money or revenue for the school
district. ... we will have $17,640 fewer dollars with which to
operate in 04-05 than we have available to use this year.
Projecting what is known about enrollments for the next three years,
we can estimate that there will be $26,732 less in 05-06 than in
04-05, $25,635 less in 06-07 than in 05-06, and $36,472 less in 07-08
than in 06-07. (Read the full article in The Chronicle).
Bulldogs spoil Trojan Homecoming Festivities - A 46
yard fourth quarter burst by a Manning Bulldog running back to paydirt put
the kybosh on OA's Homecoming festivities Friday night, as the Trojans
dropped a 7-) decision. The loss dropped OA's record to 2-2 after a
2-0 start.
The 2003 O-A Homecoming King and Queen were
announced at the Pep Rally on Friday, September 26th. This year's
Homecoming King and Queen were Thomas Heidenreich, son of Joe and Jane
Heidenreich, and Catlin Thompson, daughter of Bob and Barb Daiker, all of
Odebolt.
