The Mayor Sez:
This message is for all our little ghosts and
goblins that will be out trick or treating on Saturday, Oct. 30th, from
the hours of 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Here are some reminders for you: trick or
treat in familiar neighborhoods, don’t cut across yards or driveways,
always know where a parent is, young children should be with an adult,
never enter a stranger’s house, and last, but not least, visit only
houses that have their porch or front light on.
Now, for you older ghosts and goblins all of the above applies to you,
too!
Advice to the adult trick or drink crowd---you’re
on your own!
Have a safe and fun Halloween!
From the 'bolt,
R.J. Rex, Mayor
P.S. - My apologies for mentioning the flu shots at Sparky's last
week. It was a fiasco! 70-80 people showed up and there were
only 24 shots available. Give me a break! Furthermore, we have
a community center to use for such purposes. (It was no fault of
Sparky's that the place was jammed with cars and people!). - R.J. Rex
Election Day is Tuesday, November 2 - According to
the Sac County Auditor's Office there has been a large increase in the
number of absentee ballots for the upcoming election, with over 700

W. Bush and Dick Cheny on the Republican ticket; John Kerry and John
Edwards on the Democratic ticket. The Iowa ballot features six other

choosing between incumbent Charles Grassley (R) and Art Small (D), a
former Iowa legislator from Iowa City.
In the U.S. House of Representatives District 5
race, incumbent Steve King (R) is challenged by E. Joyce Schultz (D).
On the state level, Iowa Senate District 26
incumbent Steve Kettering (R) of Lake View is unchallenged.
Iowa House District 52 incumbent Mary Lou
Freeman (R) of Alta is unchallenged. In the southern tier of
townships in Sac County, District 51 incumbent Rod Roberts (R) of Carroll
is unopposed.
At the county level, incumbent auditor, Jim
Dowling (R) is unopposed, as is incumbent Sheriff Ken McClure (R).

Great Iowa Treasure Hunt Coming to Sac County - In upcoming
weeks the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt will be publishing in Sac County
newspapers, a list of Sac County citizens who had funds or items turned
over to the State Treasurer's Office in the past year. Watch future
issues of The Chronicle for the listing. For more
information, please visit the website at www.greatiowatreasurehunt.com.
Don't Veer for Deer - State officials are urging
motorists who can't stop when a deer steps in front of their cars to do
the safe thing - hit the deer.
"The best course of action is to brake
firmly, steer to maintain control and don't weave," said Jim
Saunders, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Public Safety..
One of every nine crashes reported to the IDOT
involves deer. Last year an estimated 7,000 motorists reported
collisions with deer in Iowa, with 10 people killed,
Singers help Singers - Kevin McFarland and Jerry Einspahr,
Odebolt members of The Denison Happiness Express Barbershop Chorus,
recently presented a $200 check to Odebolt-Arthur Booster Club president,
Kay Bloyer to support the vocal music department of Odebolt-Arthur.
The gift represents a portion of $2800 that is being distributed to vocal
music departments of 14 area high schools.
"It costs money to run a vocal music
program," said chapter member Jerry Einspahr. "With the
budget cuts being experienced by our local schools, the chorus decided
that we wanted to help. Our show patrons and local business sponsors
have been very supportive in past years so we decided to return our spring
show profit to the communities in which our members live."
The Happiness Express is the performing chorus of
the Denison Barbershop Harmony Society. Members come from within a
60 mile radius of Denison. The male acappella group meets at 7:30 on
Monday evenings at the Denison Middle School cafeteria.
Odebolt Chamber of Commerce - The October meeting of the Odebolt
Chamber of Commerce was held at Hattie Grace Boarding House. In attendance
were Vicki, Tammie, Melissa, Traci, Kay, and Shelly.
Financial report was given and approved.
September meeting minutes were approved.
Thanks to everyone who attended, worked or helped
in any way with the Chamber's Annual Pancake Brunch. It was another
tremendous success!! We served around 350 people. We couldn't have done it
without your help so thanks a bunch!! We look forward to doing it again
next year.
We had a child's handmade barn donated to the
Chamber to do what we chose with it. It was decided to just let people
sign up for it since we didn't have a gambling license.
A big thanks to Jake & Melissa from the telephone office for taking
down the flags around downtown. We appreciate your help.
Congratulations to the Senior Class for winning
the hall-decorating contest held during Homecoming. It was a tough
decision, but the seniors held on to win the top spot. They
will be awarded with a pizza party sometime in the near future. We
received a nice thank you from the Student Council for judging hallways
and giving away a prize.
Santa will be arriving in Odebolt on December 4th
this year. Heart & Home will be hosting Santa again this year. If
anyone has any additional suggestions on how we can celebrate the Holidays
in Odebolt, please let a Director know. Watch for details!!
Sherry Gritten has expressed an interest in
getting the ordinance lifted to be able to open businesses in residential
areas. She said she would like to see something like a cottage system in
place where people use them for businesses, instead of a main street. A
lot of the buildings on Main St. need some major repairs and that may
inhibit potential business owners from coming to town. She asked the
Chamber's opinion and nothing was decided at that time.
There will be a craft show on Nov. 13th from
10:00-3:00 at Western Iowa Tech Convention Center in Cherokee, Iowa. If
you would like more information please call 712-255-4411 and ask for Jodi
Feser.
Remember, we meet the 2nd Thursday of the month!!
Come join us!

Eventually there will be 107 Wind turbines dotting the
farmland north of Odebolt.
If you look closely you can see 6 towers under construction.
(10/28) WIND TURBINES
- On a drive north of Odebolt we saw around 20 huge white towers dotting
the landscape and stretching to the horizon. They are part of MidAmerican
Energy's huge Wind Turbine Project that will place 107 wind turbines in
southern Buena Vista County and northern Sac County. We saw some huge
turbines on the ground waiting to be lofted up, but none of the towers was
yet completed.
To see them, take a drive up the blacktop running
north from Odebolt, then go west on Highway 20 just south of Schaller, and
go south on the blacktop to Arthur. The project is supposed to be complete
by the end of the year and it is going to be a TRULY impressive site! As
anyone that has lived in Odebolt knows, we have lots of wind
"sweeping across the prairie", and it is great that MidAmerican
is going to capture some of that awesome power. - Barb Horak &
Bonnie Ekse (Girvan sisters).

the students who audition are selected for membership in the All-State
ensembles.

The Mayor Sez:
What a beautiful time of the year! A bountiful
harvest is upon us and with it mild weather……so far.
About this time each year I remind everyone to
plug those air leaks, keep the thermostat set from 62-67 and get an
electric space heater, if necessary. Electricity can be a very low cost
utility if it is used in the proper manner; turn everything off when not
needed. There is a good chance with the high cost of natural gas that our
heating bills could go ballistic; a source say that it may be 28% higher
than last year

Hey! The Roose Post of the American Legion has done it

For what it is worth. Recently, there have been
sightings of an all terrain vehicle and a motorbike riding around at night
with no lights. Here is the problem. If we pursue these culprits they may
very well cause themselves great bodily harm as they can’t see where
they are going. If anyone has any information on the above subject please
call City Hall. They may very well break their necks before we can help

Ted and the other members of the Patten family
received national recognition when his father and all of the eight sons in
the family were serving in the Navy. They were the largest single
family in the Navy during World War II. Ted's father, Clarence Floyd
Patten, became a recruiting officer in Portland, OR, and remained in the
service until his death on March 7, 1945 in Seattle, WA.
Ted served in the Navy through World War II and
the Korean conflict. In the course of his service, he was assigned
to the following ships: Nevada, J. Franklin Bell, Amenn, Kwajalein,
Kenneth Whiting, New Jersey, Sabine, Pasumscip, and Mispillion. He
retired from the Navy on December 26th, 1957 after twenty years of service
to his country.
After his retirement, he lived and worked in the
New York City area for over 30 years. He worked in the public schools, the
merchant marines, and at resorts in the Catskill Mountains. He was a
loyal New York Yankees fan. After moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, he
spent his last years in Lake City. He was a familiar figure out for
his morning and afternoon walks on the streets of Lake City regardless of
the weather conditions.
Preceding him in death were his parents, sister
Martha Sporleder, brothers Gilbert, Marvin, Clarence ("Bick"),
Allen, Ray ("Bub"), and infant sister Hazel Patten.
Survivors include brothers Bruce and Wayne Patten.
