The Mayor Sez...
A brief update on what I have been told (or read) on the proposed ethanol plants in the immediate area are as follows.  The proposed Arthur plant is a go and the proposed Odebolt plant is still on with construction to start next March or April.
An update on the resurfacing of Hwy. 175 thru Odebolt is as follows.  The bidding was within budget and the contract has been awarded.  Work should begin in late Spring of 2007.
With all of the above going to happen next Spring I would surmise that it will require some well planned coordination..........Hmmmmm!

Avian Visitors in Odebolt!

October 14 - As I went to work this morning, I stopped at Sparkies as I usually do. I had to drive carefully in the parking lot to avoid hitting a loitering Canadian goose that was wondering where to go. He let me walk up to him and even take his picture.
This may not be too strange, but last week we had a pelican land on one of our banks in Odebolt. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera then, so now I carry it with me. We must have some attraction for birds?! - Sharon Rohlf

Olga Rosemeyer - Services for Olga Rosemeyer, age 78, of Odebolt, were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25th, at the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur.
Read her obituary and send condolences at the Farber & Otteman web site.

One of Odebolt's Patten Brothers Honored Recently - On October 13th Bruce Patten, age 83, was honored for his service in the United States Navy during WWII at Free Enterprise Days (FED) in downtown Minneapolis along with one Air Force and three Army honorees. Free Enterprise is an association of small businesses in the Minneapolis area.
A presentation of highlights of Mr. Patten's Navy career was given along with photos on a large screen. Dale Sporleder, Bruce's nephew said that Bruce stood tall, even at 83, but became a little emotional, wiping tears away toward the end of the presentation. The crowd honored him with a standing ovation, followed by a standing ovation for all the honorees.
The Patten family was living on a farm in Cook township near Odebolt when they attracted nation-wide attention for having six sons in the Navy. Two more sons and the father, Floyd Patten, joined later on, making a total of 9 members from the same family to serve at once in the U.S. Navy. Bruce was the seventh brother of the Patten family to join.
Bruce and five of his brothers survived the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th, 1941 aboard the Nevada. Later, the brothers were aboard the Lexington, which was attacked in the Battle of the Coral Sea, and were rescued after they had to abandon ship. Bruce served on other vessels throughout the war and was serving on the Wren in Tokyo Bay, which was situated only 300 yards away from the ceremony in which Japan negotiated their surrender, September 2nd, 1945. Thus Pearl Harbor and Tokyo Bay were bookends of World War II for both the United States and Bruce Patten.

The Mayor Sez...
Keith Flink reports that the pandemic flu exercise last week held at Sac City went very well and on the local level we are well prepared if the real thing should happen. You have heard me say many times that Odebolt and throughout Sac County, we have the best first responders...anywhere.
An expo made up of governmental agencies that help cities and counties was held at Lakewood last week. One booth manned by the DOT gave me some very valuable information on available grants for our proposed new entry signs. Joan, our City Clerk, tells me that she picked up some other helpful information, too.
I'll leave you with the following Chinese proverb........War does not determine who is right, war determines who is left.

Clevelands Join the Chronicle Family - Daryl and Donarae Cleveland will now be taking pictures and writing articles about Odebolt.  Donarae was a Chronicle editor from 1977 to 1986.  She will continue as Director of the Odebolt Public Library in addition to the Chronicle position.  Daryl retired as Odebolt postmaster in 2005.  They are both looking forward to getting all the latest news out to the public in a timely manner.

Odebolt Signs - Soon a Reality - It is hoped the first entry sign on the west edge of Odebolt located on the Lundell Plastics Corp. property will be completed this fall.  Lundells will be covering the cost of the first sign and also paid to have the design created by Blue Space Creative of Denison.
The signs are five foot by ten foot and are made of cedar boards.  The routering of the design on the cedar will be done at Lundell Plastics.  The brickwork will be completed by the brick laying class from Job Corp at Denison as a community service and training.
The plan is for there to be a lighted sign coming into Odebolt from all four directions.  The city of Odebolt has committed $1000 for each sign, but this is just a fraction of the cost.  The Rotary Club has also applied for a grant to help defray the expenses.

United Bank of Iowa Fundraiser for Odebolt Signs - (Photos) Friday, October 6 UBI held a fundraiser for the new Odebolt signs.  Dave Wilken and Neil Siebenaller grilled hamburgers outside the Odebolt bank with a free will donation received from the many diners present.

Arthur hears Update on Ethanol Plant - The Arthur City Council meeting on Oct. 2nd heard plans for construction of the proposed 110 million gallon ethanol plant on the south edge of Arthur, which will get underway this fall.  The plant is tentatively scheduled to go on-line by June 2008.  It will need 39-plus million bushels of corn, will use 1,100 gallons of water per minute and provide 40 to 50 jobs.  Read more in this issue.

News items from 1876
THE SAC SUN, Vol. VI, No. 13,
OCTOBER 6, 1876

ROBBERS IN SAC COUNTY.--Last Wednesday the news came to town that the two remaining Northfield robbers, supposed to be the James Brothers, passed through our county the week before on their way to Missouri. As soon as it was known that they were probably well out of the county and State, the warlike spirit of our people rose to fever height, and a small party immediately started west to capture them. When they got as far as Indian Creek they found it too high to cross, and so they marched right back to town.
Some men on horseback were seen loitering near cattle herds on Indian creek, probably watching a chance to run off the stock.

NOTICE.--All persons are hereby warned against setting out fire on the prairie and allowing it to escape from their control, between the first day of September, 1876, and the first day of May, 1877. Any one putting out such fires will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Section 3,890 of the LAWS of Iowa provides that "any person setting out fire and allowing it to escape shall upon conviction be punished by imprisonment in the county jail not more than 30 days, or by fine not exceeding $100."
This law will be strictly enforced against any and all offenders. By order of the
FARMERS' SOCIETY OF SAC CO.

The Mayor Sez…
Some interesting facts about the time of the year are as follows: the autumnal equinox (Sept. 21st) has come and gone, the trees are in their colorful splendor and along with mild temperatures can make fall one of the best times of the year, and a warm dry spell in late autumn or early winter signals an Indian summer. We are in a wait and see about the Indian summer.
Aside from all of the above it’s homecoming this week. In behalf of the City of Odebolt, I congratulate the entire school for their enthusiasm and great spirit!
Go OA!!!
