The O-A Class of 1960 has scheduled its 50th reunion for June 19,
2010.
(excerpts from a letter to the editor:)
Dear Odebolt Community,
We have a great blessing in our midst, our Odebolt
Public Library. It was first established as a Carnegie-endowed
institution, and enlarged by many members of the area, and their
families and their generosity, to help fill new requirements and needs
over the years. Not all those needs were fulfilled by endowments,
memorials, grants, tax dollars, or budgets, so many decades ago, a small
group of local women decided they would quietly aid the library. Over
the years, those ladies cleaned; repaired books; dusted; trimmed trees
and weeded; moved books, and then moved them again; held bake sales and
card parties; hosted coffees for visitors, visiting authors and
dignitaries; and purchased supplies not covered by the library budget.
Today, the Odebolt Public Library is a healthy, vibrant
community institution that all of us are proud to point out to visitors,
and smile as children, families, and senior citizens come and go in
increasing numbers--all enjoying their reading and communication skills,
and above all, gaining information. So the goals of the Friends of the
Odebolt Public Library have now been met. The library's "extras" are now
covered in the extended lines of its budget and memorial funds--all
managed by the library staff members and the Odebolt Public Library
Board of Directors.
So, it is with some pride, as well as sadness, the
Friends of the Odebolt Public Library voted at their September 14, 2009
meeting, to disband and retire from their extensive service to the
library. The decision was also made to give their remaining treasury
funds to the library for general use.
It has been our pleasure to be a quiet part of the
Odebolt Public Library's progress and its history.
Sincerely yours,
Friends of the Odebolt Public Library

The
Mayor Sez…
The last couple of weeks I have been talking about
dogs, un-kept property, and other things and all of it for a reason.
Bingo! You guessed it! To make Odebolt a better place to live and work.
We need to make Odebolt attractive to new businesses that ultimately
create jobs and to people who want to buy a home in Odebolt. Our OBC
(Odebolt Betterment Comm.) is doing just that. Keep up the good work! A
major project is underway to improve the looks of the downtown. If
Howard H. hasn’t contacted your business yet, he will. Call Howard if
you want to make a personal donation; large or small; it is a good
cause. A huge thanks to you that have already contributed. Your
contribution will be used as matching funds to hopefully get an
endowment grant that should see the project to completion. We are well
on our way to improve our downtown.
Thanks to all the sponsors that enabled Odebolt to be
on the “Our Hometown” segment of KTIV at 5:00 P.M., Sunday, the 25th of
October. Tune in if possible.

From time to time I talk about what an “abatement of a
nuisance” means. The two most common nuisances that we have are dogs
either running loose or continuous barking, and an unkept property.
These nuisances are reviewed by the City Council each month and dealt
with accordingly. Most cities have the same problems and are taking
further action. Instead of a citation, after a 30 day notice, the city
will clean up the unkept property and charges levied thereof. Our
Council is considering doing just that!
Someone said, “Doing nothing is very hard to do—you never
know when you’ve finished”.

If your dog comes up missing check with City Hall.
We have a kennel for overnight only and then the dog will go to a dog
pound at Newell. I don’t have to tell anyone that it will be costly to
get your dog back. You may be issued a citation according to our city
ordinance pertaining to dogs running loose. Enough said.

Gov. Chet Culver has officially proclaimed Oct. 4-10, 2009, as 4-H
Week in Iowa. The proclamation ties in with National 4-H Week
activities in the state and throughout the country. The theme for
National 4-H Week is “Meet the Future.”
“Governor Culver’s proclamation is a great honor to the Iowa 4-H
program,” said Chuck Morris, director of the Iowa State University
Extension 4-H Youth Development program. “Many 4-H projects and
activities emphasize science, technology, leadership, citizenship,
communication and the environment. Iowa youth also continue to
participate in traditional 4-H projects such as livestock and
gardening.”
