The Mayor Sez:
Everyone I talk with of late
wants to know when the Lindquist building is coming down. At this writing…..who
knows!! The DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) has rules and
regulations about asbestos and proper procedure must be followed or we
could be subjected to a fine….a very substantial fine. There IS
asbestos in the subject building and we are following the rules and
regulations as prescribed by law. The bakery building will be
included and will be removed at the same time. The above info is the best
I can give you at this time. The City has signed an agreement with Dean
Quirk to perform the razing of said buildings.

The Mayor Sez:
Every once in a while a
mayor gets to do a fun thing. I recently was invited to give a brief talk
at our library’s open house celebrating their 100th year. The
community takes so many things for granted and yet behind the scenes, take
the library for example, we have dedicated people that serve on our
library board, and also a dedicated librarian and her staff. I might
add that the above has been the case for the past 100 years. The
above people contribute sooooo much for the enjoyment, enlightenment, and
entertainment of our community. We salute!

The Mayor Sez:
Fall will officially be here
in just a few days and with it will be leaves…lots of leaves! The City
appreciates your effort in raking the leaves and hauling them off to the
dump, however, if you choose to burn them, here are a few suggestions to
follow: do not burn in the street or gutter, do not burn when the wind is
up, always respect your neighbors, and always tend your fire (toasting
weenies and marshmallows O.K.).
Thank you!

Woman places second at international festival
By Roger Kaska, with permission from
the Huron Daily
Plainsman,
Huron, SD
Webmaster's
note: Barb Votrobeck sent in a link about Janis (Smith) Reinschmidt,
formerly of Odebolt. She came in second in an international
"Saw" contest. Permission was received from the Plainsman
to reprint the article on odebolt.net. Congratulations, Janis!
After learning to play the saw
from her father, Janis Reinschmidt has used the instrument to entertain
people for a number of years.
But she has never before entered any competitive
events. However, that changed during the summer when she and her
husband Paul journeyed to California for the International Music Saw
Festival. The festival was held at Santa Cruz and Felton, Calif.
“I wasn’t planning to enter the competition,”
she said. “I went to the festival to learn new techniques and to hear
other people play.”
Most people associate the saw with a piece of
equipment for building a house or something similar. But Reinschmidt
has turned it into a musical instrument, using a bow.
At the California event, she met a man from
Kiron, Iowa, which is just 10 miles from where she grew up.
“I thought he might have learned to play the
saw from my father,” she said, “but he didn’t.”
Reinschmidt grew up on a farm near Odebolt, Iowa,
which is 75 miles south of Sioux City. Her father, Emery Smith, who
is now deceased, taught her how to play.
“He played for things around the community,”
she said.
After moving to the Yale area, she decided to start playing again.
“I wanted to carry on the tradition started by my father,” she said.
Her brother, Dale Smith, who lives in Ankeny,
Iowa, also plays. They once played a duet together.
During the three-day festival, it was explained
that the competition consisted of playing one song, using any kind of
accompaniment, then playing “Auld Lang Syne” twice without any
accompaniment.
“I decided I could do that,” she said. “That
I wouldn’t embarrass myself, and maybe I could put South Dakota on the
map.”
So she entered the competition with 22 others.
They included nine from Japan, one each from England, New Zealand and
Canada, and the rest from the United States.
When the results were announced, “I was
shocked,” she said. She had tied for second place — with a California
woman — receiving a certificate and a gold medallion, designating her
runner-up placing.
The song she played for the competition was “Theme
from ‘Titanic.’” She used a compact disc for accompaniment.
The contest winner was Hajime Sakita of Japan. He
also won the competition in 1997. Third place in the contest was
Seiji Kimoto, also of Japan, a third-place finisher in 1997.
At the end of the competition, Reinschmidt said,
“We all came together and played some numbers.
“There were about 30 of us who participated in
this orchestra-like program,” she said. “And I must be honest, we didn’t
sound very good.”
Reinschmidt has played the saw at numerous
functions in Huron, De Smet, Lake Preston and Wessington Springs.
She also played for a home extension meeting in
Chamberlain, a nursing home in Sioux Falls and for her daughter’s PEO
chapter in Minneapolis.
Another reason she wanted to attend the festival
is because one of the judges was David Weiss. Many years ago she bought
one of his records, and she said the photo shows him holding his saw.
“The number was on the saw and I wrote it down
and bought the same kind,” Reinschmidt said.
Weiss also is the principal oboist with the Los
Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
“I met the man, and he performed for us on the
stage, both on the oboe and saw,” she said. “He’s quite a musician.”
Reinschmidt said she “loves to play the saw because it is unique.”
“It is fun to see the looks on people’s faces
who are surprised to hear music from a saw,” she said.
She said the only other saw player in the
immediate area is Jacob Maras of De Smet, who displayed his talent last
summer at the summer Campbell Park program.
A graduate of Huron University with a bachelor’s
degree in music and a minor in the keyboard, she has taught piano lessons
for 35 years.
She currently is starting her third year of
directing the choir at the First United Presbyterian Church. She replaced
longtime director Milo Pietz, who retired.
“I’m loving it,” she said of her
choir directing. “It’s been a good challenge for someone my age to
work with such a wonderful group.”
She and her husband have three children, Tristin
(Jason) Gruenhagen of De Smet; Tifani of Minneapolis; and Tauni of
Chicago.

Odebolt Public Library Celebrates 100 Years.
In 1896, a group of women organized as the
Women's Reading Circle established a public library in Odebolt. Through the
generosity of many, the Odebolt Public Library was opened in July 1898 in

financial aid from Andrew Carnegie, a building was erected on a lot on
Second Street donated by Mr. W. W. Field. This building served the
community until 1997, when remodeling of the Carnegie building was begun,
as well as construction of a new addition to the east, the Rosmer Bruce
Annex. The Annex contains the John and Marion Selby meeting room,
which is available for rent to the community. The library is
governed by a Board of Trustees and is supported by the Friends of the
Library organization. Today the library is governed by a Board of
Trustees and is supported by the Friends of the Library organization.
An Open House to celebrate the 100th year of the

Paul Neumann Runs for School Board - Paul Neumann
of Odebolt is seeking his first term as school board member at
Odebolt-Arthur.
Paul and wife Elaine have four children ages 12
to 21, with two children in the OA school system. Neumann has been
in the construction business in Odebolt for twenty-seven years and is a
member of Faith Lutheran Church. He is seeking election to the
school board to ensure quality education for all of children to better
prepare them for their lives after graduation. He believes they
should have every opportunity available to them to achieve academically.
Neumann feels with declining enrollment and
budget issues, there is a need to pursue resources for additional
funding. He states that he does not completely support whole grade
sharing yet, but says that sharing of programs and staff of area schools
is a great way to pool resources, and a good way to see how whole grade
sharing would work.
School Board Elections are Tuesday, September
14th. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m.
New Administration at O-A - Russ Freeman of Ida
Grove became Odebolt-Arthur's new superintendent this year. His
position is being shared with BCIG. He is married to Shari who is an

principal positions in Harlan and New Providence, Iowa and Brainard, NE,
was the high school activities director in Columbus, NE; and taught in
Atlantic and Runnells, Iowa after graduating from Northwest Missouri State
University.
Freeman states that he is "looking forward
to working with the O-A staff, students, and community in my position as
superintendents of schools."
Dani Trimble of Galva is the new elementary
principal at Odebolt-Arthur. She was originally from Schaller and
has lived on a farm south of Galva with husband Guy and two daughters for
the past 13 years.

Faith Lutheran Renovations
Click each photo to enlarge. Photos and
article courtesy of Bob Harden.
In November 2003, the members of Faith Lutheran Church started
a remodeling project that included a new roof and new office
space.
The roof on the store room was removed and the new office was
built above the store room. The roof was then placed on top of the
new office. Decra steel shingles were installed on the church
roof. The small Swedish house, known as the stuga, was also roofed
with new Decra shingles.
The existing office, the new office, the basement and the store
room were painted and new carpet was installed in the offices and
the lounge area in the basement. New folding room-dividers were
installed in the basement.
A celebration and appreciation dinner for the congregation was
Sunday, August 29. |

The Mayor Sez:
The old buildings downtown
have been the topic of conversation of late. Donations are being made to help
with the razing of the Lindquist Bldg. and, hopefully, a few more. I am sure everyone understands
that releases (or quit claim deeds) must be in order before anything can
happen. Hopefully, next week
things will be in order to accomplish the above.
Not to be an “I told you so”, but Labor Day
weekend is about upon us—Have a safe one!
