that impact school reorganization, as well as the impact of
reorganization on our local economies.
Comments from members included the role of school in
preparing students for life after high school, the importance of
maintaining strong businesses to attract people to our communities, the
importance of maintaining a strong school system to attract both
employees and businesses, and the role of school in the process of
rebranding our region. This topic will be continued at the Jan. 18 CAC

CAC members were given a handout of methods for organizing a
school board in a new school district that will also be discussed in
detail at the Jan. 18 meeting.
MISTLETOE: Chances are, holiday revelers
will find themselves underneath the mistletoe at least once this holiday
season.
Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was
believed to bestow life and fertility, while protecting against poison
and serving as an aphrodisiac. It later took on a more political meaning
as the ritual of cutting mistletoe came to symbolize the emasculation of
the old king by his successor.
Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or
entryways. The tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likely
stems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and is often
associated with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a period of
merrymaking that pre-dated Christmas. History also suggests that
mistletoe was a symbol of peace.
STATE DANCE: The O-A/BC-IG High School
dance team competed at the state dance contest earlier this month. They

A tax imposed by an area school district has
come under fire from some people who have to pay it. Odebolt-Arthur is among many Iowa school districts that
have an "instructional support levy", a tax that helps pay for things
like teacher salaries. The tax has been in effect about 10 years now.
But a petition was brought to the school board asking
for a public vote on the future of the levy. The superintendent says a loss of that money would be
devastating to the school. "It's very significant for Odebolt–Arthur. It brings
around 170,000 dollars and so without that, we'd have to make some major
changes," quotes Dani Trimble the Superintendent of Odebolt-Arthur.
Trimble says the district would probably have to cut
five to six teachers to compensate for the loss. "Last year when we heard so much 10 percent across the
board cut for school districts across Iowa. The cut for Odebolt–Arthur
was $165,000 so not renewing the Instructional Support Levy tax would
have a greater negative impact than that major cut last year," tells
Trimble. The petition fell short of the 144 signatures needed to
force a vote. It got 114. We were unable to get comments from any of the
petition–backers to find out what if anything might be their next step.
As for the tax levy, the school board has already
approved extending it. (see the video)

OBITUARIES
LORAINE BEYER (formerly Mrs. Harry Sellman)
Loraine Estella Beyer, age 91, of Holstein,
passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the
Mercy Medical Center of Sioux City. A memorial
service was held on Monday, November 22, 2010 at
11:00 AM at the St Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Holstein with the Rev Curtis E. Benson
officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the
Odebolt Cemetery of Odebolt. The Nicklas D. Jensen
Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the
arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial may be
directed to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Holstein.
Loraine E. Beyer was born on April 1, 1919 in
Cushing, Iowa to August and Estella (Teut) Hermecke.
"Herms," as she was nicknamed in Holstein, excelled
in basketball, glee club, band and class plays.
After graduating from high school in 1937, Loraine
moved to Des Moines and attended AIB Business School
for three years. Obviously she couldn't get
basketball out of her mind, so she played on the AIB
basketball team, and also on the team of a
cosmetology school in Des Moines. It was at this
time that Loraine had the opportunity to ride to
California with an aunt and uncle who were taking a
couple of weeks vacation. Loraine was approached by
a wealthy family in need of a governess and accepted
the job. It was some time later when Loraine became
homesick for good old Iowa and returned by train.
She met Harry Sellman at the Holstein bowling
alley while accompanying her father to his weekly
bowling league. Harry was home on leave from the
Army and was stationed in Brownwood, TX. Harry
returned to base and later Loraine and Harry's
sister Opal Sellman took a train to Brownwood, and
were volunteers for the Civil Service. It wasn't
long after that that Loraine and Harry realized they
were in love, so immediately after his discharge
from the Army they came back to Iowa and were
married in Sioux City in October of 1942. The couple
moved to Odebolt, IA where Harry helped his uncle in
a grocery store, and eventually bought the business
from him. From this union of marriage they had three
children, Michael, Jennifer and Jan. Loraine was
very active in the Auxiliary Legion and her church
and was a cook at the Odebolt Schools for over
thirty years.
Harry passed away on July 3, 1987, and Loraine
remained very involved in her church and Sunday
school groups, along with bridge clubs and traveling
with some of her lady friends. It was at this time
that Loraine and her friends decided it was time for
a change of the usual bridge clubs and Legion
Auxiliary, so they signed up for country line
dancing classes. Loraine had completed the beginners
and advanced classes and was really into line
dancing. One day her instructors called and asked
her if she would mind having a dance partner from
her hometown of Holstein. They said his name was Roy
Beyer and that he was a widower. Loraine decided she
would be Roy's partner for a few classes, and would
continue dancing with him if she felt comfortable.
Loraine and Roy were then married in the Odebolt
Lutheran Church on July 16, 1997 and moved to his
farm in Holstein. Loraine loved living on the farm
and especially enjoyed her gardening, church groups
and attending the Legion Auxiliary functions. In
January 2010 Loraine and Roy moved to Char-Mac
Assisted Living in Holstein. Roy passed away on
October 21, 2010 at Char-Mac and Loraine passed away
at Mercy Medical Center following complications
after hip surgery.
She is survived by her children, Mike and wife
Bonnie Sellman of Downs, KS, Jennifer and husband,
Larry Shipman of Dunlap, IL, Jan Sellman of Salix,
IA; a sister, Dorothy (Hermecke) and her husband Tom
Ward, of Mesa, Az, and her family; step children,
Craig and wife Patty Beyer of Holstein, Donna and
husband Greg Johnson of Holstein, and Joann and
husband Dave Abbot of Sioux City; five
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 10 step-gradchildren;
and three step-great-grandchildren.
Loraine was preceded in death by her parents; one
sister, Doris Ehler; and her grandson, Gary Lee
Sellman.

ROBERT HEMPHILL
Robert Weston Hemphill, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa,
died peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Horn
Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, surrounded by his
loving family.
Bob was born on September 22, 1919 at home on the
farm near Milford, Iowa, the son of Frank and
Maryetta (Warburton) Hemphill. He attended school in
Milford and graduated from Milford High School in
1937. After completing school Bob continued to farm
with his father. On April 21, 1946, he married Alice
Hanson, a teacher in the Arnolds Park School. They
stayed in the Milford area for the next three years
while Bob continued to farm. In the spring of 1949,
they moved to the farm north of Odebolt, which was
designated as a Century Farm in 2008. They lived
there for forty years and raised their three
children: Joan, Robert (Butch), and Ann.
Most of Bob’s life was spent raising purebred
Angus cattle for breeding stock, something he
cherished doing. Bob retired from farming in 1986.
Showing horses, raising cattle, playing golf, and
reading were some of his favorite things. Bob also
loved playing cards and looked forward to every
Tuesday when his bridge foursome got together. Most
of all, Bob cherished his family and took great
pleasure in being called Bob-O, the name given to
him by his grandson. Sadly, Bob did not meet a
special goal to see his great-grandson who is due to
be born January 2011.
Bob was a long-time member of the Iowa Angus
Association, serving as a director for many years in
the Denison Chapter. He was a past president of the
Spring Lake Golf and Country Club and served on the
Board of Trustees for the United Methodist Church in
Odebolt.
Survivors include his wife, Alice, of 64 years:
his children: Joan Blassengame Davis of Hampton, VA,
Butch (Judy) Hemphill of Odebolt, IA, and Ann
Hemphill of New Hope Village in Carroll, IA;
grandson: Jared (Jill) Hemphill of Des Moines, IA;
one great-grandchild expected in January; brother:
Keith Hemphill of Milford, IA; sisters-in-law: Doris
Hemphill of Spencer, IA, and JoAnn Baker of Sioux
Falls, SD; many nieces, nephews, extended family
members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank
and Maryetta Hemphill; his father-in-law and
mother-in-law, Edward and Ella Eliza Down Hanson;
brothers: Dwight, Glenn, and Bill Hemphill;
sisters-in-law: Lorelie, Mary, and Marguerite
Hemphill; son-in-law: Jay Blassengame; nieces: Lois
Ann Hemphill and Diane Guthrie.
The family thanks all the doctors and nurses who
have cared for Bob the past four years and
especially the caring staff at Horn Memorial
Hospital for the care they provided Bob in his final
days.
Celebration of Life was held at 11:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, December 1st at the United Methodist
Church in Odebolt following private family inurnment

Kidz View Visits The Chronicle -- The OA
5th Grade TAG Class recently visited the local
newspaper office to learn more about the basics of a
newspaper. The class has been working on making a
one-page paper (both sides), Kidz View, for the
elementary school. The students have been learning
about deadlines, choosing an editor and thinking of
stories or interviews to fill the pages.
The class reported that coming to The Chronicle office
really opened their eyes to all the things that go
into putting a newspaper together. After the tour,
the class had a lot of discussion on how to improve
their paper for December. The students also enjoyed
Christmas cookies and juice boxes, compliments of

The Odebolt Betterment
Committee held their monthly meeting Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:00 at the
Downtown Café. Present were Linda Godbersen, Janet Leonard, Joan
Godbersen, Phyllis Franken, Kerry and Deb Reinhart, Howard Hustedt,
P.Dale Gronemeyer, Elaine Rex, Madeline Meyer, and Jack Bensley.
The bank balance at this time is $7011.97 in checking.
Savings for the triangle park upkeep is $300.48.
Marjo’s in Sac City has sent a bill with a 1 year
warranty on the Downtown Greenspace trees, so the bill was paid for
$1900.00. The City paid $1000.00 from the Trees Please Grant and Odebolt
Betterment Committee paid $900.00. Tom Lake has stated that we should
keep watering the trees until Christmas. Madeline and Jim have been
watering and mulching.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Howard gave update on the Downtown Greenspace stating that
the project should be complete by Dec. 1st. We are waiting for
Christensen-Huffman to finish the plaque. P.Dale questioned as to why we
did not put a water faucet in this area? After much discussion this item
was tabled until later for discussion.
Kerry gave update on the City Park project for next year. We
are applying for INS and Sac Co Endowment Grant for this project. We are
still waiting on an estimate and when we receive it we will finish up on
grants. Jack stated that he has 3 windows that may work for the shelter
house. Kerry will look into this. If anyone has suggestions as to what
they would like to see done at the park please let us know. We cannot
start on this project until we hear from Sac. Co. Endowment Foundation
grant. We are still waiting for Twyla Godbersen to bring the statue she
made for the park over to Gomaco for it to be sandblasted and painted.
We think that Eric Miller has this, Linda will check with him on this
matter.
Jack has checked with Region 12 to see if we were eligible to
apply for the extension of the Memorial Walk. We are eligible but were
told it is not worth the effort for what we would get.
Linda has finished her Master Gardner’s course. And she
now has to put in 40 hours for community service. She may be able to do
the landscaping around the bathroom area to apply towards these hours.
Howard and Joan gave a talk on the Region 12
owner/occupant grant. Joan asked if she could use our accomplishments
for this project, which we gave permission to use. Howard gave us
information on the grant application and asked for our moral support for
this project.
Dec. meeting will not be held because of the holidays, so our
next meeting will be Jan. 11th, 2011 at City Hall.

Obituary
A BLACK FRIDAY - by Andy Ross (Class of 1967)
Lately there has been a lot of talk about
Black Friday after Thanksgiving, in which the merchants hope for enough
sales to keep their revenues in the black.
Can't help but remember, however, back in the days of
high school, a Friday which, for us, was unforgettably Black ...
Looking back, it was really kind of weird, having been
planned on the proceeding Friday (of that particular month and year)
that the high school students in Odebolt should wear black sweat shirts
the next Friday. And I can recall that ensuing Friday as clearly as
though it were last week.
On that particular day Mr. Charles Ferguson, our high
school principal, along with Mr. Lloyd Moe, our junior high principal,
walked abruptly into our study hall and somberly announced, "The
President of the United States, and the Governor of Texas have been
shot!" They then left.
Shortly thereafter Mr. Ferguson returned and said, "The
President is dead!"
And there we were that day in study hall, dressed in
black, for it was Friday...
...November 22nd, 1963.

day working to re-locate the snow using their own

The first measurable snow of the 2010-11
winter fell on November 12 and 13, blanketing the area with five
inches of snow. The wet, heavy snow, plus ice from the rain which
preceded the snow, caused several power outages in Sac County and
damaged a number of trees throughout the area.

Plastics Manufacturer Innovates
Products for Grain-Processing Industry
November 12 - Lundell Plastics, a leading manufacturer of innovative
plastic products, has nearly saturated the agriculture industry with its
products, and the company is expanding in a related market: grain
processing. Lundell Plastics is seeing increased sales to
grain-processing plants around the U.S. as the industry that processes
grain for ethanol, livestock feed and human consumption looks for ways
to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Lundell Plastics first entered the grain-processing market about 20
years ago, gaining traction by offering plastic products to replace
traditional steel parts, which are prone to corrosion and not as durable
as Lundell's high-tech poly. Lundell Plastics has recently introduced
new products that will benefit grain-processing plants, including drag
conveyer paddles, U-trough liners and plastic auger flighting.
Processing plants handle significantly more grain than small farms, so
they require larger diameters of Lundell Plastics’ products to fit their
commercial-grade augers. Considering the processing plants’ needs,
Lundell Plastics offers flighting to fit 10-, 13- and 17-inch augers.
Customers have been pleased with the Lundell Plastics products, said
Brian Lundell. “They’re happy to see cost savings, both with the initial
prices and the savings over time.” Lundell believes that because many
plants find it difficult to reduce operating costs, Lundell Plastics
products have been able to successfully advance quickly in the
grain-processing industry, even in the international market.
From the company’s headquarters in Odebolt, Iowa, Lundell Plastics
has shipped its products throughout the U.S. and around the globe for
nearly 30 years. With the addition of new products and larger sizes of
existing products, Lundell said he anticipates more sales to the
grain-processing industry. “We can offer customers some things that
bigger companies can’t,” he said. “I think part of the reason we’ve
grown into the grain-processing industry is because of our approach
toward personal service. As we branch out, we maintain focus on costumer
service, which will ultimately help our customers grow their businesses
too.”

Downed Power Lines - On November 1,
MidAmerican Energy personnel were called out to the
scene of downed power lines. Apparently a semi
clipped the lines, pulling them down and leaving
them hanging across the 300 block of Pine Street
located just north of Cubby's in Odebolt. Another
semi traveling north did not see the downed lines
and drove through the dangling mass. The windshield
of the second semi was shattered and the utility
pole was snapped in half. Approximately 172
customers were without power from 2:05 p.m. to 3:15
p.m. (photo)

Lutheran Outreach: Throughout the year
Faith Lutheran and Bethel Lutheran help support two
very important outreach programs within Sac and Ida
counties.
It is done through monies from Faith Foundation,
collecting school supplies, adopting families or
children for Christmas and by collecting items each
month for Mid-Sioux. Sarah Circle donates quilts
each year to the programs. It is one way the
churches have an impact on those in their midst.
On the first Sunday of the month members are invited to
bring items for Mid-Sioux: For this November
suggested items are paper products, such as toilet
paper, paper towels, etc.

OBC Future Plans for the City Park
The Odebolt Betterment Committee is making plans
for some much needed improvements in the City Park for next year. The
improvements will include: updating the enclosed shelterhouse by
installing more outlets, 2 ceiling fans, a serving counter and 4 new
windows. These updates will make the shelterhouse user friendly. We will
also do some repair work on the outside of the building and finish by
giving it a sprucing up.
We also plan on installing a walkway to the open
shelterhouse. This will make this area accessible to everyone who wishes
to use this area for a picnic or just to enjoy the afternoon.
We would also like to do some landscaping in the area
to make it more eye appealing and resurface the basketball court and
install backboards and hoops. We are in the process of applying for
several grants to help with these projects, but we are in need of your
contributions also. If you have any questions about this project please
contact Kerry or Deb Reinhart, or if you would like to contribute to
this cause please mail to Deb Reinhart Box 34, Odebolt, Iowa 51458 or
you can drop your donation at Iowa State Bank and designate the "City

average, as directed by the formula in our contract:

Dressed in an oversized blue poncho and green, nylon rain pants
borrowed from his mom, Kelton Van Dixen, seven of Odebolt, trudged
four miles along the Wheels-to-Heels trail around Yellow Smoke Park
near Denison on Saturday during the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk
accompanied by his new three-month-old puppy Scrappy.
When asked about his motivation, his answer was surprisingly
complex. Kelton’s aunt works in an Alzheimer’s unit in Rapid City,
South Dakota. Since Kelton was even younger, he has enjoyed visiting
her, and the residents at the facility.
Sadly, though he remembered his friends when he visited, “they
would have to re-meet me every time” Kelton explained.
He decided he would like to do something to help.
Kelton’s mom Rachel said, “It was all his idea. He’s always saying
he’s trying to stop Alzheimer’s so no more of his family and friends
get it.”
She added that since he was three years old, Kelton has walked the
entire four-mile route all by himself.
Each year Kelton works to raise money for the Alzheimer’s
association through his church, family, and friends.
“I feel really happy when I give them the money,” Kelton stated.
This year he gathered $600 for the organization and was the top
youth fund raiser.
Kelton is in second grade at the Odebolt-Arthur School. In addition
to the Alzheimer’s Association fundraiser, he enjoys dancing, Bible
club at church and spending a lot of time with his great-grandpa.

OBITUARY
MAXINE ROBERTS
Maxine Roberts, age 93, of Arthur, Iowa, entered into her Savior's
presence on Monday, September 13, 2010, at Morningside Rehab & Care
Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the Arthur
Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa, under the direction of
Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends Glen Lozier and John
Aiken officiated, with burial following in Hayes Township Cemetery,
rural Arthur. Memorials may be directed to the Arthur First Responders.
Maxine was born on July 9, 1917, in Nemaha, Nebraska, to O. Ray and
Florence (Denny) Kelly. She married Alvin Roberts on February 5, 1935,
and was married for 55 years. Maxine faithfully took care of Alvin until
he passed on September 3, 1990. Maxine and Alvin moved to Iowa in the
1940's after traveling many states, from Texas to New York, while Alvin
worked for the Oklahoma Pipeline Company. They lived on farms in the
Early, Odebolt, Ida Grove, and Arthur areas. In 1961, they bought a
house in Arthur where Maxine lived until she entered Morningside Rehab &
Care Center on September 2, 2010.
In 1954, Maxine began attending the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur.
She had many happy memories of the friends she made at the church and of
the times spent in the activities and events of the church. She was very
active in Women's Missionary Society, Dorcas, Vacation Bible School, and
Sunday school, and was always willing to lend a helping hand in several
activities when needed. She provided many food dishes for the church.
Due to failing health for several years, Maxine was unable to
participate in church activities, but always kept up with the events and
needs of the congregation through her prayers. She was a silent prayer
partner for the church and was part of a ladies quilting group in
Arthur.
Maxine enjoyed sewing and cooking and was an excellent seamstress. She
always had food on the table when company arrived. Throughout the years,
she would feed the hobos that stopped by as they traveled the country.
Up until the time she became ill in May, she was still trying new
recipes and sharing the food with friends. Maxine was a hard working
housewife and mother and tended gardens and did a lot of canning. She
enjoyed music, playing the piano, and reading. She was known for her
beautiful penmanship and was faithful in writing letters and sending
cards to family and friends. For some years she painted signs for Farm
Bureau.
Maxine's faith and love of God always guided her throughout life. She
was a wonderful loving and caring mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother. Her loving ways and support gave us the quiet
strength to handle things that came along. She made us smile and gave us
joy. She will be greatly missed.
Those preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Alvin; three
sisters, Vera Saum, Pauline Osborne, and Norma Lee Salmons; and a
son-in-law, Leroy Comstock.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are three children, Terry (Marge)
Roberts of Morrison, CO, Sharon Comstock of Milford, and Jeanette
(Larry) Webber of St. Peters, MO; 14 grandchildren, David Comstock,
Christina (Lodean) Schmidt, Jim (Barb) Comstock, Mike Comstock, Renee
Comstock, Kelley (Randy) Carlson, and Gregory (Melissa) Webber, Jeff,
Susan, Tom, and Jill Roberts, Maura Kienzel, and step-grandchildren,
Doug and Stuart Boll; 16 great-grandchildren, Amber (Trevor) Paska,
Angie Schmidt, Adam Schmidt and fiancée Kristin Corelett and son Logan,
Jared, Michael, Matthew, and Emily Carlson, Haleigh, Courtney, and
Lindsey Webber, Megan Comstock, MacKinsey Roberts, and Kerry and Bill

We
Remember 9.11 On September
11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks on our nation killed thousands
of innocent men, women and children in a matter of hours. Nine years
later, the aftermath of this tragedy remains fresh in the hearts and
minds of America. We continue to remember and mourn the victims.
On September 11, 2010, we pay tribute to those whose
lives were taken, and pray for the families who continue to grieve.
America has turned tragedy and grief into a strengthened resolve to
protect liberty, and we salute the brave troops who continue to defend
our freedom abroad. Nine years later and forever, we remember September

We've been enjoying watching the antics of a couple
pair of Cooper's Hawks in our neighborhood the past couple of weeks.
Don Poggensee of Ida Grove feels the older pair hatched the two
younger ones and are teaching them to hunt. It's so much fun to see
them flying from tree to tree, landing in lawns and on houses.

Child care costs are on the rise, and with the downturn in the
economy parents are feeling the strain. In the state of Iowa, the
median income for a single mother is $23,073.00; while the median
income for a two-parent household is $74,289.00. Iowa ranks 27th
(including the 50 states and the District of Columbia) for Least
Affordable Child Care for an infant in a child care center with care
costing 35.9% of the median income for single mother families and
11.1% for two-parent families. Overall, the estimated cost to have
one infant in child care is over $8,000.
For a parent with a 4 year-old in a child care center, Iowa ranks
20th for the Least Affordable Child Care with 30.6% of a single
mother’s income going towards child care and 9.5% for a two-parent
household. Nearly $7,000 is spent yearly to have one 4 year-old in
child care. Finding quality child care is stressful enough, but
adding in the high costs can make it a financial burden for families
which adds additional stress. This is where your local Mid-Sioux
Opportunity’s Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) can assist. CCR&R
will help you find quality and affordable child care within your
area.
CCR&R of Northwest Iowa serves the counties of Buena Vista, Calhoun,
Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Dickinson, Emmet, Hamilton, Humboldt, Ida,
Kossuth, Lyon, Osceola, O’Brien, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Pocahontas,
Sac, Sioux, Webster, Wright, and Woodbury. Every family should have
access to affordable quality child care to ensure that their
children will be healthy and successful. For questions regarding
child care options in your area, contact CCR&R by calling
1-800-859-2025.
Sept. 12 Schroeder benefit planned
Family and friends of O-A graduates Bryanne and Brian Schroeder of
Spencer are planning and hosting a benefit for their daughter,
Hadley, on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Odebolt Community Center in
Odebolt. Chris Cakes will be serving a pancake dinner from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. There will be a raffle & silent auction.
Hadley is 20 months old and has had severe health issues since her
birth. She battles several different allergies, digestive system
problems, slow muscle development and spinal disorders. Hadley’s
birth weight was a little over eight pounds, and now she weighs only
20 pounds.
The family has been to numerous doctors in surrounding states, have
had several tests done and have spent many nights away from home and
still have no diagnosis for Hadley’s problems.
Hadley has many special needs and requires ongoing therapy and
treatments, most of which are not covered by insurance. In an
attempt to improve Hadley’s health, it is necessary that the family
spend four weeks in Kansas City where she will undergo hyperbaric
therapy.
The committee is looking for chance and silent auction items. If you
are interested in donating in any way, contact Kevin and Terri
Carstensen at 712-668- 4842, 1751 300th St., Odebolt, Iowa, 51458,
or Ranell and Kathy Drake at 712-668-2614, 510 W. Fourth St.,
Odebolt, Iowa, 51458.
Hadley is the granddaughter of Randy and Kim Veit of Odebolt and
Gary and Karen Schroeder of Lake View. Great-grandparents are Duane
and April Veit, Freida and Les Stehr, Larry and Bev Beckman, Darrell
and Thelma Schroeder, all of Odebolt, and Lucille Mohr of Lake View.

ODEBOLT HISTORICAL MUSEUM MINUTES
Members of the Odebolt Historical Museum met on August 25, 2010
at 7:00 p.m. with the following members in attendance – Kathy
Larson, Renae Babcock, Verna Mae Schwaller, Eleanor Petersen, Thelma
Schroeder, JoAnn Scott, Mary Schroeder, Phyllis Kies, Marilyn King,
Rebecca Ullrich, Alice Hemphill and Margaret Landgraf.
President Kathy Larson called the meeting to order. The
secretary’s report was approved as read. The treasurer’s report was
presented by Treasurer Renae Babcock.
Old Business
Mary still needs to check with Traci Allen on getting several
yearbooks. John Noyd will be in town this week, for the sale of
Elaine Raasch, so plans are to get a picture of him and family
members to put in the paper as a way to thank him for his recent
security system donation. Window cleaning service is still doing a
good job. Eleanor brought the scrapbooks that she has up to date and
will leave them at the museum. All members were encouraged to cut
out articles from papers and to take pictures that can be added to
the scrapbooks in the future. Once again everyone in attendance
thanked Eleanor for the many hours she spent compiling the
scrapbooks.
New Business
We have had several bats in the building. It is thought they have
been coming in through several upstairs windows. It was discussed
that we check into have some of the upstairs windows replaced. A
motion was made by Verna Mae to allow Kathy Larson to check into the
cost of replacing the windows and to go ahead and have them
installed. Alice Hemphill seconded the motion, and the motion was
then voted upon favorably. Kathy passed around a copy of the
paperwork she had submitted as a follow-up to the grant that we had
received from the Sac County Endowment Foundation. President Kathy
Larson requested we need several more names and phone numbers to add
to the sign that is on the front of the museum, to be used when
people want to come and visit the museum. Alice, Eleanor, and
Margaret volunteered to be added to the list. Since our last meeting
the Odebolt Rotary visited the museum.
The next meeting of the Odebolt Historical Museum will be in
April, 2011. Visitors and new members are always welcomed.
Secretary,
Mary Schroeder

Memorial to Historical Museum
Elaine Vivian Dannenberg Raasch (left) enthusiastically shared her knowledge of
the history of Odebolt during her latter years. She followed the
development of the Odebolt Historical Museum and admired its volunteers
in their accomplishments in establishing and maintaining the museum. In
keeping with her wishes to preserve the heritage and artifacts of the
community, her nephew John Brooks Noyd funded the installation and
ongoing maintenance of an alarm system to protect and to minimize the
loss of the community keepsakes from fire, burglary and vandalism. This
was done in admiration of his Aunt Elaine's devotion to the Odebolt
Historical Museum and the Odebolt community. (Photo of John Noyd;
Elaine's children, Bonnie Raasch Mason and Jim Raasch; and Kathy Larson,
