The Mayor Sez…

I see where a former Odeboltian, Ethel Sundell, went for a balloon ride. Now this is not an unusual feat for anyone to do except Ethel is 92 years young. After all, her husband was in the Army Air Cops, one son is an Air Force Fighter pilot, and an airlines pilot and now Ethel is a veteran balloon aviatrix. Go for it, Ethel! My question to you, Ethel, is did you have a sip of the traditional champagne after your ride? (You do not have to answer that.)
An aphorism is a short sentence expressing a clever observation or a general truth, for example, “A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you are in deep water”.

Plastics Innovator Reshapes Facility
Lundell Plastics of Odebolt, Iowa expands to accommodate high demand

For over 25 years, Lundell Plastics has been creating ideas to make work easier. Their flagship product is Poly Cupped Flighting, a helical device used to move material gently from Point A to Point B. Before Lundell Plastics came along, flighting, which is widely used as the central component of farm augers, was made of steel. Lundell’s poly twist on flighting soon became the standard in farming and beyond because it’s highly durable, doesn’t corrode, and treats materials more gently. Today, the flighting and other Lundell products are used in a wide variety of applications both agricultural and commercial, including the food and biofuel industries. The company is now expanding to keep up with this demand.

The most recent expansion of Lundell Plastics is their manufacturing facility and headquarters in Odebolt, Iowa (Pop. 1,153). The nearly complete 13,000 square foot addition was added to make room for more production and inventory of Poly Cupped Flighting and other plastic products. Brian Lundell, of production, said the need for the addition was clear. “Poly Cupped Flighting has become the industry standard. It’s hard to buy a new seed tender that doesn’t come with Poly Cupped Flighting already installed. If it comes with an auger, it most likely has our product in there,” said Brian.

Included in the addition are many new areas for increased production and storage. Brian says these changes will allow Lundell products to remain competitively priced while new innovative products can be added to the lineup. Among these new products are the FreeFlo telescoping tube and the QuickHinge, which both enhance planting operations during spring. In the shop, the addition
also brings more efficiency and comfort: there’s even a new fitness facility being built on-site.  “We understand the value of keeping happy and healthy employees and how that can enhance the customer experience. We always put our employees number one, which means they’ll put our customers number one,” added Brian.

The Mayor Sez…

I recently was made aware of a communication referring to my remarks about wind power energy and how misinformed I am about all the good points thereof. I totally agree with all of the positives that go with wind power, but isn’t wind power about lowering the cost of energy to the consumer? As mayor I am vitally concerned about our utility bills. Hopefully, because of wind power, down the road we will see a reduction in our energy costs.
For those that are wondering how we are coming on our new lagoon project, other than a couple of fine points to modify, it will soon be approved by the DNR. The next step will be the financial phase that encompasses obtaining grants to make the entire project feasible.

Road Projects to Cause Lane Restrictions--In Sac County, beginning Monday, Sept. 21, weather permitting, one lane of U.S. 71 will have intermittent lane closures from Auburn west and north to the west junction on Iowa 175. In Carroll County, short, intermittent lane closures can be expected 2.6 miles north of Iowa 141 and also 3 miles south of the Sac County line.
Intermittent lane closures are expected to begin Sept. 17 on Iowa 3 in Buena Vista County. A contractor will be allowed to restrict the roadway to one lane from west of Buena Vista County Road M-31 east to U.S. 71. Intermittent closures should be expected in the area until late November.

Sac County communities have been very generous in donating promotional items and discount coupons. Most bags have values that exceed the $5 admission charge. Businesses have also donated more than 150 door prizes which will be given randomly to Quilt-A-Fair visitors with lucky numbers in their programs.

Eleanor Burns, who will be at the Sac County Quilt-A-Fair all day Saturday, September 26, has sent 13 quilts from her best-selling pattern books.
The Sac County Quilt-A-Fair will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, with a $5 admission. Visitors can also enjoy a Show and Shine Car Show on Saturday, a tractor show on Sunday, food from the Kiwanis food stand and two outdoor quilt-related vendors. There is no charge for admission to the grounds.

The New Iowan columnist writes about entertaining visitors from out of state at their acreage, including a drive following the Sac County barn quilt brochure. She's enjoying the slower pace, quiet weekends and easy driving of her new home, and is happy that although she can visit big cities, she can come home to a place where she has to make her own fun. You can read her column almost weekly in The Chronicle and see the area through new eyes.

We Remember 9.11
On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks on our nation killed thousands of innocent men, women and children in a matter of hours. Eight years later, the aftermath of this tragedy remains fresh in the hearts and minds of America. We continue to remember and mourn the victims.
On September 11, 2009, we pay tribute to those whose lives were taken, and pray for the families who continue to grieve. America has turned tragedy and grief into a strengthened resolve to protect liberty, and we salute the brave troops who continue to defend our freedom abroad. Eight years later and forever, we remember September 11, 2001.

OBITUARY
ANTHONY ROEDER

Anthony P. Roeder, age 98, of Wall Lake, formerly of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.
Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 1st at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt with Father David Hemann officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Anthony was born on a farm northeast of Arthur, Iowa, in Richmond Township on January 17, 1911, the son of Joseph and Rose (Klemm) Roeder. He went to country school through third grade and then attended boarding school in Odebolt. He was baptized and confirmed and a life-long member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt.
He farmed with his father raising flax seed during the war years as it was needed by the government. On April 23, 1937, Anthony was united in marriage to Anita Morey at St. Martin’s Rectory in Odebolt. They became the parents of a son, Lloyd, who served his country in the United States Navy for four years. Anthony, Anita, and Lloyd served in the Ground Observer Corps during the 1950’s. In 1930 he became a member of Gonzaga Council No. 1876, and received a memento in recognition of 10 years of service as financial secretary of the council. When he turned 72, Anthony received a life membership in the Knights of Columbus.

They moved to Odebolt and lived there for 26 years, then moved to Le Mars, Iowa to be closer to their son, Lloyd. Anita passed away in 1998 after suffering a massive stroke and Lloyd passed away in 2002. When Anthony’s heart began to fail he moved back to Odebolt and where he entered the nursing home. In 2008 he transferred to Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. In their younger days, Anthony and Anita did grounds work at St. Martin’s church and cemetery. There was lots of grass to mow but he enjoyed it.

The Mayor Sez…
Have you ever wondered how much energy wind generation contributes to the overall production of energy in Western Iowa? According to MidAmerican Energy they are the national leader in ownership of wind generation capacity among regulated utilities. From 833 wind turbines at 8 project sites the wind turbines contribute 1.8% of energy production. I guess you don’t have to be an electrical engineer to figure out the millions of dollars invested plus the million of dollars in maintenance and upkeep that it all seems more for show than saving dough. They say coal still produces over half of our electrical energy. Hmmmmmmmmm?
After the 4th of July I always mention that Labor Day will be here sooner than we want it to be. Well, believe it! Labor Day is this coming Monday. Have a safe one!!

Curator Kathy Larson noticed when she was painting that there used to be a plinth block above each pillar between the windows. She will check into having them replaced before the awning is put up.

FARBER & OTTEMAN TO OFFER
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP PROGRAM

The Farber & Otteman Funeral Homes will be sponsoring a seven week grief support group program beginning Thursday, September 10th , hosted at their Farber & Otteman Funeral Home location in Lake View . Brad Smith, a funeral director and certified bereavement facilitator with 23 years of grief counseling experience, will be conducting the group.
The overall goal of a support group is to help the participants as they progress through their grief journey and provide them with a renewed sense of hope and healing for their lives.
The group is open to individuals, couples, and families to help them understand and work through some of their emotions related to their grief. Grief is not a bad thing….it is the cost of having loved someone very deeply. This death may have been recent or some time in the past, but the time of the grief process is not the same for everyone. If you feel a need to share your feelings or want to understand them, then this is a healthy sign of recovery and not a sign of weakness.
Each week from 7:00 to 9:00 PM the group will share together and examine various grief related topics. The participants will compile a resource notebook with handouts to assist them in their healing process.
For more information or to register for the group, please call the funeral home at 662-7135. Prior notification of a desire to participate will help determine the amount of materials needed.
The death of a loved one or friend can be a lonely experience, but here are people who would like to bring hope and healing to your life once again.

Does anyone know of this company?

The above is a photo of a quilted potholder approx. 6in x 8in that a customer from the Nemaha area brought into our store wanting more information about the Odebolt company on the face of the potholder.  Maybe one of you readers may be able to help out.  So far I've had no luck finding any information about them.

Thanks, Vicki Beckman

(Editor's note:  I've seen similar things on Ebay.  It may just be a fake company with a town name displayed in order to sell the product.)
